PLP Rollout Marc Bean & Dale Butler

March 1, 2012

[Updated with video] This afternoon [Mar.1] the Progressive Labour Party announced that Dale Butler will represent them in Constituency #25 Warwick North East, while Marc Bean will stand in Constituency #26 Warwick South Central.

Mr Bean will go head to head against the OBA’s Ras Mykkal, while Mr Butler will be challenged by the OBA’s Mark Pettingill.

Marc Bean presently holds the Warwick South Central seat, which he won in a 2010 by-election, earning approximately twice as many votes as his two rivals combined.

The One Bermuda Alliance has previously confirmed that sports photographer, musician and social commentator Ras Mykkal will stand for the Opposition in Warwick South Central.

Backbencher Dale Butler will stand for the PLP in Constituency #25 Warwick North East, the seat he presently holds after winning 53.5% of the vote against the UBP’s Gina Spence [494-426] in 2007.

The OBA has already confirmed that Mark Pettingill will move seats to contest Constituency #25, while landscape firm owner Jeff Sousa will contest Mr Pettingill’s old seat of Constituency #28 Warwick West.

Update 5.11pm: Mr Butler said, “The people of Warwick North East have kept me busy with their needs whether it was street lighting, speed bumps, mirrors, access to major roads, community development or employment. They have certainly kept me busy.

“I am pleased to say that over the years we have developed the Rubber Tree Festival, Dr. Yvonne Blackette annual lecture, Charles Bean annual lecture, and sponsored numerous awards and scholarships to name but a few.

“The Progressive Labour Party has a strong record to stand on, and I look forward to continuing to tell our story
to the constituents, face to face, person to person, from one household to the next.

“I look forward to continuing as the representative of Warwick North East, Constituency 25 and I hope the voters
will Keep the Butler in the House,” said Mr Butler. His full statement is here [PDF].

Marc Bean said, “Today, as I stand before you, I am convinced that the Progressive Labor Party is the best Party to govern Bermuda, is the Party that represents the interest of all the people, and is the Party that can secure Bermuda’s future.

“In this regard, let me make it clear, that in order for us to attain these objectives, it will require a new and
evolved Party. While I am eternally grateful for the blood, sweat, and tears of our elders and fore-parents in the struggle for equality and justice, what is required today, in order to secure our collective future, is not the PLP of
1963.

“Today, the condition that Bermuda finds itself in requires us to think and act differently from the past. We must avoid becoming stuck within stereotypes. Times have changed, and we, naturally, must change also. As the youngest elected Government Member of Parliament, I consider this to be one of my primary responsibilities, and I am thankful that our Premier has given me the freedom to bring this into effect.

“Over the past 13 years, it is clear that we have made some mistakes. I will be the first to admit this fact, and I am
also willing bear the burden of these experiences. Yet at the same time, we can be rightly proud of our accomplishments. The key is to learn from these experiences, repeating what has proven to be good, and rejecting those actions that were negative.

“Can we improve our performance? Yes, we can. Will we continue to improve? Certainly, we must do so, and not just for the sake of winning the next election, but for the sake of doing right by our people, with an eye to ensuring that we create a legacy that is worthy to be inherited by our children’s children,” said Mr Bean whose full statement is here [PDF].

  1. LOL (original TM*) says:

Well I see Marc Bean winning against Ras Mykkal. No offense to Mr. Mykkal but I think the OBA have the wrong person running there.

Although Mr. Butler has integrity on his side and is generally liked by many his lost bid for premiership seems that his party has him against Mr. Pettingill whom in my mind should have stayed in #28 is a bit of a tuff call but I think Mr. Butler will retain his seat either way two hard working people in #28.

In #25 the choice I now have is between a top cop and the landscaping guy?! Both have put fliers in the mail at time they know no one is home. Realy? come better than that PLEASE.

    LOL

    • Tommy Chong says:

Mr. Butler has integrity? For who, his extended family?

    • Itsaboutallofus says:

I think you mean in #28 you have a choice between top cop and landscaping guy – that is where I live as well. I have had visits from both of them. You can’t expect them to always find you at home. I know that both gentlemen have been out during the week and on Saturdays. If they have left flyers you can contact them as well.

That being said Jonathan Smith has my vote in #28!

      • Onion says:

Seen Jeff Sousa several times, haven’t seen Jonathan Smith. That being said Jeff also lives in #28, I’d rather have someone from there representing my interests.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

So you like the ex UBP white boy cop then.

        LOL

    • Pastor Syl says:

@ LOL: Dale’s integrity took a nose dive in the mud when he voted for the Tucker’s Point fiasco against his conscience because he wanted to continue to run for his party. Shame.

  2. Tommy Chong says:

I hope the people in Warwick North East have enough sense to ask Dale what his restaurants have against hiring Bermudians when he comes to canvas.

I also hope the people in Warwick South Central have enough sense to ask Marc Bean why he wants to ruin the atlantic oceans environment.

Warning to the people who ask these questions. Stand on your table before doing so to avoid drowning in the doo doo that comes after the question.

To bad they’re not in my constituency because I’d make them pant with my questions.

    • Finally says:

All you seem to do is talk a whole pile of rubbish !
I’m Bermudians(and if you need to know, a black one.)
I also own a number of restaurants. And I can assure you that NO ONE in Bermuda fights harder than Dale to hire Bermudians!
I’ve seen for my own eyes what he has done trying to hire our people, and continues to do on a daily basis to bring our people BACK into the hospility industry.
So shut up and get your facts right.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Your full of it!!!!! What’s the ratio of Bermudians to foreign staff in your restaurants? Also, what’s the ratio of Bermudians to foreign staff in Dale’s restaurants? You & dale just hire a couple of Bermudians to say you did & keep people off your backs. I remember going to restaurants that had an almost full Bermudian staff & within the last 4 years its all been flipped around. Dale is all about getting things done for his extended family. I understand we need a few people in hospitality from abroad but having more expats than locals is tearing the backside out of it. Especially when there are locals that are willing & able which there are.

Who do you think requested the work on the street lighting that Dale is boosting about? Careful before you post your answer for this question. I know a facebook page I can reference from a certain association thanking him for his help with the street lights. The funny thing is that the help the association is referring to was not even in Warwick. Why is dale receiving request from people in another constituency instead of their representative? Also go ahead & get them to delete it off their facebook page so you can try to shoot me down. I have a screen shot already so its too late.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Also since yo hablo español I have discussions with hispanics in our community. Some feel quite insulted that dale had so much good things to say about his extended family but didn’t stick up for them as much. They wonder if Dale feels their less important or if he thinks what Cornel Burch said about them is more to the truth then what was said about others. The thing is the hispanics will admit their was a slight truth to what the cornel said so why don’t the others be real also.

At least the hispanics are trying to share their cultural foods with us why doesn’t Dale’s extended family share also instead of doing for themselves on sundays. I wonder if they even have a license for the food they sell on sunday. HMMMMM! Bet many don’t know all this goes on & Dale probably thought his rosy glasses would stay on all of us.

  3. Cancer says:

These guys cud probably be the two most respectful members withiin the PLP – but only after we see what Mr Beans decision will be on the Furbert/Zane SDO fiasco. What’s taking this guy so long?? Anyone know?

    • star man says:

This too shall pass… we had to deceive you.

    • Rummy says:

Cancer, you worry about Mr. Beans decision?
Just shows how naive you are.
You actually think that he would blah blah blah Furbert/Zane SDO?

      Long live the PLP.
      Bermuda RIP.

    • pepper says:

In my opinion Mark Bean is an ass kisser !and he is looking for what he can gain before he makss a decision regarding Zane and wayne….people of bda it is all about money…. do not trust these people in power….it all about screwing us to get what they do not deserve……when the hell will bermudians wake up and see how the Cox gov has allowed the likes of Rolf Commisiong to be a part of the P.LP. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Paula please be a leader and get rid of this scum bag !!!you do not need the likes of this bank robber to be a part of your government… and why the hell do you support Burch ???
this so called man has no use for you…. and why the hell do you support him ?

  4. Cancer says:

Actually – Dale aren’t you tired of being overlooked year after year by the PLP? A Party you have dedicated yourself too? You need to move on because the PLP have shown your unappreciated and are just using you as they know you will carry their vote. After that you’ll be kicked to the wayside. And that’s been proven!

    • d-reader says:

      SHUD he join OBA mate

    • Tommy Chong says:

Nah! Dale has already gotten his perks from being on plp.

      • Wandering says:

Did I hear correctly last night that Dale was giving the PLP the upper thumb for their role in organizing the Big Tree functions and all this time, i thought it was him working with the small business people. I had been up there a few times and I didn’t see any PLP shirts or flyers or banners….. hmmmmmm!!!

        • Tommy Chong says:

As Dale has said he’s been plp since a teen. That’s years of working to get hookups & since plp’s election win he’s took full advantage of the extra perks entailed. Dale & plp are synonymous so if Dale does something its the same as plp doing something. Not all plp supported events have green plp shirts, flyers or banners all over i.e. the feel the love events. In that same way I have no doubt Dale has helped the small businesses but doing what makes a small business happy doesn’t always mean its for the good of the nation. Dale has set a fallacy in motion that Bermudians do not want to do the work that small businesses offer. He has never stated facts or statistics to back this up just his word which means little when he has his own team members contradicting him. Dale helping small businesses get set up is all good but then to help them import thousands of foreign workers defeats the purpose of helping Bermuda to the fullest. What puts another spanner in the works is many of the businesses are not fully locally owned so there’s little qualm over shafting a local out of work.

  5. d-reader says:

    bravo
    bravo

    roll river jordan roll

  6. YES MATE! says:

Dale Butler is liked and respected by just about everyone who has read anything about him, he is intelligent, honest and has morals. No wonder the Pee el Pee have him warming the back bench.

    • sandgrownan says:

Generally, however he did vote against his principles to stay on the roster…so he’s no better than any other politician….

  7. Concerned Citizen says:

Brilliant, first-class remarks by Minister Bean. No spin or typical drivel that has become the norm in these rollouts. He appears to be an agent of change within the PLP, and I pray that he succeeds. The Premier has made an excellent choice and its good to know that she is supportive of Minister Bean. The PLP and Bermuda have a future leader in him.

Dale Butler still has much to offer, and the PLP must have figuered that he is the only person who can win in 25. I do hope that he would show more consistency as sometimes he flip-flops, but overall, he is a good man. Mark Pettingill will not beat him.

    • Rummy says:

“The PLP and Bermuda have a future leader in him”

If your that “Concerned” why are you not concerned.

      You must be FF.

      • Face the Nation says:

Personally , sometimes I cringe when Marc speaks . The double negatives roll of off his tongue so frequently that it’s a normal Berbonic . Marc is akin to a brand new car with an old clapped out muffler . Dale has no backbone . Blondell took hold of him one Sunday and shook him so badly that Dale resembled a naughty schoolboy caught smoking .

    • Truth (original) says:

…still no “i am drug free” certificate produce?. He doesn’t have to anyway because the constituents of 26 have proven that they are not concerned about that when the voted him in, in the first place.

When we fail to connect the dots, we get what we deserve.

  8. Cancer says:

Mr Bean says ““Over the past 13 years, it is clear that we have made some mistakes. I will be the first to admit this fact. – The key is to learn from these experiences, repeating what has proven to be good, and rejecting those actions that were negative.”

Why does it take Mr Bean to say this but not the Cog? Is he more in tuned with the people Han the Cog is? Does he have more morals than the Cog?

  9. When R They rolling out Rolfe? He was the first to win a primary.ya?

    • Wandering says:

he doesn’t have breakfast anymore down at Bermy Cuisine – I guess they decided to whisper so that he wouldn’t take any more of their ideas.. Now, he is probably trying to drum some up over there on Ord Road…. Working hard for his $1++,+++.00 per year… doing absolutely nothing….

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

Dale is still here???? He has been so quiet so long I thought he had dropped out of politics & left the Island. I guess they need him to raise his hand when told to do so. So sad. Think of the polititian he could have been.

  11. Cancer says:

Yes Dale is being used by the PLP. First by Ewart now by the Cog. For such a good guy he can’t see it. He’ll never get a seat in the house but he’ll get the PLP votes..

  12. Cleancut says:

Col. Burch will “think and act differently when he gets in Cox.

    • Tommy Chong says:

How is Dale Butler any better than Cornel Burch? Talk nice to the people & do favors for them & they’ll believe anything you say wether true or false. Speak your mind about truths & you become the enemy of the state. Remember Cornel Burch use the word SOME not ALL & the word some in the context he used it in was true.

    • star man says:

      Really?!

  13. Itsaboutallofus says:

It is hilarious but also sad to see the comments on here by Cancer, Triangle Drifter, Rummy & Tommy Chong who have blatantly played their hands and identified themselves as OBA or at the very least anti-PLP. So therefore their comments are expected. I wonder though why they are so interested in how they perceive the PLP has treated Mr Butler. Why don’t they just stay focused on their Party and their candidates. Unless the OBA has pushed you to blog against the PLP. And this is your contribution to the campaign…

    • star man says:

Anything to rid the Island of the pox that has become the PLP/BIU Party.

And if the OBA screws up, you’ll hear from me as well. I am not a member of the OBA nor do I personally know anyone who is.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Is this that vanse person again or someone else with one oar in the water. Either way have fun going in circles. I’m neither for plp or oba your just misinterpreting my words. So that there’s no more misinterpretation I’ll type it straight up. I feel that plp & many others favorite Mr. Butler is two faced & as our premier likes to say about non plp supporters he is unpatriotic. Then again for all of plp to let dale help his extended family before helping locals they are all unpatriotic. This could go the same for oba but I can’t really tell until they actually start campaigning instead of petty finger pointing at their opposition. The members of oba need to say exactly what they want to do if elected & let the ideas be progressive unlike the unprogressive labor party to get my vote.

    • My two cents says:

You are hilarious playing detective while your party spends your hard earned money on crap; of course I am assuming that you pay your taxes and work. Gotta love people’s priorities.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Come now you know thats standard PLP MO paid blogger and campaign bloggers just ask LV and her crew all 8 of’em.

      LOL

  14. Truth is killing' me... says:

I want everybody to take a drugs test before I vote for them. That’ll separate the boys from the men. HYPOCRITES!!!!The lot of them.

  15. Triangle Drifter says:

Pro OBA? Not necessarily. Anti PLP? You bet, & there are almost $2B reasons to be anti PLP. They have failed & they have failed miserably.

If I had my way we would have nothing but independents voted on in a proportional manner. No political partys.

My interest first & foremost is the future of my decendents. Right now because of 13 years of PLP, that future does not look very bright.

  16. Boundary Change says:

#25 is subject to a boundary change and with that very close margin in 2007 it will most likely swing towards the OBA in the next election. Bust the pavement petingil!

  17. Cancer says:

Itsaboutallofus – has what been said about the PLP and Mr Butler true or untrue? If untrue as your gonna say back it up and say why he was never given a portfolio under the past two admins! He’s being used.

    • d-reader says:

you seem to lack knowledge of history mate

      he quit cabinet in 2009

  18. Cancer says:

@cleancut I caught that joke lol !!! Yes yes!!

  19. Pafe says:

How can guyz just ROLL out Beans and Butlers SEPARATELY? Everybody and their psychotic grenny knows that the only way Beans and Butlers carry any effectiveness is in the form of a hybrid “Butler-Bean”. I had a Jeeves-Pinto a few years back that completely liquidated my capital gains while simultaneously winning Constituency #456 in a landslide during the 1934 election. My cousin Umpo had a Smithers-Kidney that not only kept him out of prison for petty theft, but sailed him to a smooth victory in St. Georges (lest we forget the hotly contested election of 2044) with 4,105% of the vote. All I’m trying to say is that this is a CHEAP PARLOUR TRICK on behalf of the PLP. They honestly think they can get away with selling us a Bean over here and a Butler over there.

    Pathetic.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Is that you uncle pafe? Have you been keeping it safe? I see you on here blowing your berp! berp! berp! beeeeerp! horn. I see where your going with this but I think you’ve got the other’s brain fried like a DEA Reagan campaign. At least serve them some fava beans with a nice chianti with there meal. FFHH! FFHH! FFHH! FFHH!

      • Pafe says:

Of COURSE I’ve been keepin’ it safe, buh! Is there really any other way to live? ;)

        • Tommy Chong says:

You’ve gotta point there poppa! Keeping it safe is the best. Unless someone doesn’t mind their halichoeres bivittatus falling off. :-D

  20. REALISM says:

so tired of hearing about plp…in other news. mr butler gimie a fishcake!

  21. Oyeah says:

Shame Dale turned his back on the human rights act??? LOST MAJOR VOTES THERE
