Political Consultant Roy Boyke Dies
Caribbean political consultant Roy Boyke, credited by some with helping to engineer the Progressive Labour Party’s first election victory in Bermuda in 1998, died at his home in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday [Mar. 25] after a long illness.
Four years after working on the victorious PLP election campaign, Mr. Boyke was brought back to Bermuda on a one-year contract as a Tourism Ministry media consultant.
Mr. Boyke, a UK-trained photographer, was chief photographer at Trinidad’s “Daily Mirror” newspaper in Port of Spain when it suddenly closed late in 1966.
He played a leading role in combining former employees with business and also labour interests to launch that country’s “Express” newspaper in June, 1967.
In the fledgling “Express”, Mr. Boyke worked as advertising manager before embarking on a successful career of his own in advertising, publishing and communications.
He went on to distinguish himself in political communications on behalf of Trinidad & Tobago’s National Alliance for Reconstruction, which won office by a landslide in 1986.
As a much-in-demand political communicator and consultant, he recruited for electoral campaigns in Bermuda, Barbados, St. Lucia and Antigua.
Roy Boyke is survived by his wife, Frances Anne and his daughter, Rionne.
Funeral arrangements are to be announced.
