Finlayson To Instruct Bermuda Glee Students

April 11, 2012

The Argo Foundation announced today [Apr.11] Mr. Don Finlayson, Production Director of Canada’s renowned Shaw Festival, will be instructing students attending this year’s Bermuda Glee summer intensive.

Mr. Finlayson, who has more than three decades’ experience in light, sound and other aspects of production design, will teach a special workshop in light and sound design for students interested in technical theatre during the June 29-July 8 intensive.

He will then oversee the students’ work as they manage the backstage production elements of the Bermuda Glee performances which will be presented on July 8.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for students to learn about technical theatre from an experienced professional with international experience,” said CedarBridge Academy drama teacher Patricia Nesbitt, one of the teachers participating in Bermuda Glee.

“As more and more of our students discover a love of the performing arts, many of them will find the production side of things a fascinating area to focus on. Working with Don Finlayson this summer will give these students an excellent insight into what this type of work entails.”

Prior to joining The Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario in 2005, Mr. Finlayson was Director of Technical Design from 2002-2005 for Le Rêve [The Dream] at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas. From 1999-2002, Mr. Finlayson was Technical Director for the Canadian Stage Company.

His experience also includes Production Director for Livent, Inc., where he worked on productions presented in New York, London and Toronto, and Production Director at Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Mr. Finlayson has extensive experience working with young people. At the Shaw Festival, he provides production and design-related student seminars, tours and student co-op work placements as a part of an extensive education outreach program that connects high school students with the theatre.

He has taught at the National Theatre School in Montreal and is a member of the Professional Advisory Committee for Technical Production for Theatre and Live Events at the Sheridan Institute [a post- secondary program for the performing arts] in Ontario.

Any student interested in participating in Mr. Finlayson’s technical theatre workshop at Bermuda Glee should obtain a registration form from their performing arts teacher or from Wendy Davis Johnson at wendy.davisjohnson@argolimited.com.
