Videos: Carifta Games Motorcade, Schedule

April 5, 2012

Bermuda, which will be represented by 55 athletes at the 2012 Carifta Games being staged at the island’s National Sports Centre from April 7–9, cheered on its competitors during a colourful and celebratory Hamilton motorcade today [Apr.5]

The regional sporting event kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning [Apr.7] with the Girls 100m Hurdles, and ends on Monday evening [Apr.9] with the 4×400 relays and medal presentations.

Bermuda Carifta Team athletes introduce themselves in video below:

Bermuda’s athletes and family members met this morning at the National Sports Centre where they were picked up by the team bus.

With the team on board, the bus then travelled through the city with a convoy of cars following close behind sounding their horns to support the team members.

The convoy made its way to City Hall where the athletes were greeted by Acting Sports Minister Michael Weeks.

The Minister was accompanied by Wayne Carey, Bermuda’s Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Youth, Families and Community Development.

The team formed on the steps of City Hall and was addressed by Minister Weeks who expressed his congratulations and best wishes to the athletes.

The bus then continued across the city, arriving at Fairmont Hamilton Princess where team members and officials will reside for the duration of the games.

Approximately 550 junior athletes from 26 Caribbean countries are expected to compete at this year’s Carifta Games in Bermuda, Minister of Youth, Families and Sports Glenn Blakeney said earlier this month.

The Carifta Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association.

Bermuda last hosted the event in 2004, which saw the start of the rise of now record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica who became the first junior athlete to break 20 seconds in the 200 metres, with his winning time of 19.93 set in Bermuda

Participating countries this year are: Anguilla, Haiti, Antigua & Barbuda, Jamaica, Aruba, Martinique, Bahamas, Montserrat, Barbados, Netherlands Antilles, Bermuda, St. Kitts & Nevis, British Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Dominica, Suriname, French Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, Turks & Caicos Islands, Guadeloupe, US Virgin Islands and Guyana.

Loved the introductions. Had to chuckle at the young man at 1:51 who gave a single name…guess it’s a ‘Cher’ or ‘Madonna’ or ‘Oprah’kind of thing and he needed no further introduction-LOL!

Anyway, good luck Team Bermuda…I know you’ll do great!
