CPC Hosts Dinner, Guest Speaker Martin Burt
With support from the Bermuda Commercial Bank, the Coalition for the Protection of Children recently hosted a dinner and discussion with guest poverty specialist Martin Burt to explore the topic of “Seeking Success through Empowerment, Employment and Entrepreneurship.”
A CPC spokesperson said, “Martin Burt is founder and CEO of Fundación Paraguaya, a 25-year old NGO devoted to the promotion of entrepreneurship and self-help to eliminate poverty around the world. He is a pioneer in applying microfinance, micro franchise, youth entrepreneurship, financial literacy and technical vocational methodologies to address chronic poverty in Paraguay. Martin has received many awards for his work with micro finance and social entrepreneurship and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate level online courses in Social Entrepreneurship.
“When the CPC was approached with the offer of planning an agenda for Martin’s visit to Bermuda, it was immediately clear that it was an opportunity to capitalize on. As an organization we have increasingly been discussing how to do more to empower our clients rather than simply resolve crises. In exploring the Fundacion Paraguaya website, there was a clear link of how we saw Martin’s expertise and experience as being a wonderful learning opportunity for Bermuda.
“He has successfully worked with empowering the poor and lifting families out of poverty. While Bermuda is not the same context as Paraguay, in talking to Martin since his arrival on Sunday, it is very apparent that there are definite similarities in working to empower those who are struggling in Bermuda as in Paraguay.
“Over the course of the evening, Martin shared the insight he has gained in his work on social entrepreneurship and microcredit, and facilitated a cross sector group of 20 individuals from the civil service, corporate and non profit communities in discussing how to empower those in Bermuda’s lowest income quartile through employment and entrepreneurship. It was an incredible evening of learning and dialogue.”
