Stagged accident.
Looking for attention again,Terry? How insensitive and ignorant can you be? Your comment is low even for your standards
Why would a motorbike be that far over to the right, except to overtake (while obviously unsafe)?
Prayers go out to this young man, his family and the driver of the car, all of whom must be suffering at this time. I wish and pray for a happy ending.
come on k, baby. you can make it, i`m praying for you, please don`t leave so soon. #prayfor k*.
We love you K….! Glad u okay!
With the number of vehicles on the road lets slow down folks, and let’s encourage our youth on push pedal bikes to wear safety helmets…it can save their life!
I agree about the helmets but everyone should still be extra vigilant on the roads. One can be in an accident wearing a helmet and still suffer fatal internal injuries to their body…even a severed limb could cause death.
Seeing that bike laying there breaks my heart. It seems that he’s o.k. so thank goodness for that.
the young boy si ok so stop the bad talk he is not in icu he is on children ward doing ok please bermuda stop making things out to be so bad stop saying around bbs and stuff he is ok
Hope everyone is ok… Is that tint legal?
I too, have the same question as Rard..
WHY would anyone be that far on the wrong side of the road?
it was clearly a case of people not paying attention the young boy was turning into lukes pound and then swurved right back into the path of the motorcycle which did everything that he could to miss the lil boy and thats how the guy hit the jeep u cant see that the pic is staged how the pedal bike land like someone is fixing the chain
I hope everyone is ok Pedal bikes is becoming an epidemic on the roads. They are a nuisance especially first thing in the mornings when your trying to get to work. Motorcycle riders are just as bad. There’s no protection while riding a pedal bike on Bda’s roads from a 3500lb vehicle so why ride one on the road.
You can’t be serious! The roads are for everyone!
@RUFKM-Yes, they are but I think you’re missing the poster’s point. It’s a miracle there aren’t even more accidents on the road with all these guys on pedal bikes getting all in the way. I’ve seen so many near-misses I’ve lost count. Those bikers who come out during rush hour traffic are a colossal pain in the butt. It’s not like we have bike lanes like many other countries, so bike riders are taking a big chance every time they come out in busy traffic. If they get hit by a car that weighs a couple of tons, who do you think will be the one who gets hurt-the biker or the person safety cushioned in their SUV? They should at least come out when the roads quiet down some…
Yes the riders are a pain but there is limited track road to ride on so at some point they have to come onto the road. If everyone wasn’t so impatient and overtook cautiously we wouldn’t have the issues we have with the cyclists. And people don’t help by riding the cyclists a$$ because they are annoyed and want to get past. And as far as coming out at a quiet time when do u suggest? at some ungodly hour in the morning cause their is no quiet time on this island!
People nowadays are in too much of a hurry to go no where. If you leave you homes on time you wouldn’t have to race to get where you need to be.
Tired of all this stupid talk! Grow up and become responsible!
I agree that these pedal cyclists are a nuisance. I’m not talking about the ones who ride because that is their main mode of transportation; I mean the ones who do this as a hobby. They come out during rush hour riding many abreast holding everyone up. I don’t know what planet you’re living on, but there are quiet times that people can ride-they seem to deliberately pick the busiest times just to annoy the motoring public. It’s not a case of people wanting to rush, but they don’t want to crawl along at 2 miles per hour either. Why should people leave extra early just because these idiots choose to be inconsiderate in getting in everyone’s way?
I have to laugh when posters like you tell others to grow up. You’re the one who needs to grow up because you fail to respect that everyone is entitled to an opinion and that it won’t necessarily match yours. You must be one of those pedal cyclists since you’ve gotten your panties all in a twist over this-it’s really quite laughable. The previous posters didn’t say anything the least bit immature. How about you grow up and learn to respect the opinions of others?
That is truly one of the most ignorant statements I have heard in a long time. Where do you expect people to ride? I cycle on the roads often for fitness and because I enjoy it. I see some incredible stupidity from other drivers on the road all the time. Sometimes it seems like people are trying to see how close they can come to me without actually knocking me over the curb. Give me a break. If you can’t handle the traffic in the morning, leave earlier. People all over the world cycle—even in places like New York City. People like you who think they’re the only ones who have a right to the road are the real nuisance!
@SueBee. Other jurisdictions like New York City etc have cycle lanes. Just like horse and carriages are prohibited from being on the roads at certain times you nuisance cycle riders need to be regulated also. And yes I don’t think, I know, I have a right to use the road I don’t ask for it I pay a license and insurance fee every year. You don’t. So I don’t want to hear any BS from Horse people or nuisance cycle riders that they have a right and are protected by law. And why should I have to leave earlier in the morning because you wanna go out riding during the busiest time of the day on the roads that’s ridiculous. You silly people are out between 7A.M and 9A.M and just after 5P.M WTF’s up with that? Happy riding.
I agree that riding a pedal bike during rush hour traffic is stupid. Your chance of getting hit by a car is far greater as people are in a rush to work and hardly paying attention. Also, you are inhaling a ton of car fumes that could be avoided by riding at a different time. I say 7:30-9 and 4:30-6 would be times I wouldn’t run, walk, or pedal bike because I value my life too much.
I will add that some people do pedal bike to and from work and that is a different case altogether. We have to share the roads and slow down. But if you are out to exercise, you are better served all around not doing it in rush hour.
Well, don’t come crying to us when someone knocks your azz into outer space. You’re taking a chance every time you go out there. If you get hit, it will be your own fault because you know how it is but still do it. You can’t change other people, they’ll always do what they do. The only behaviour you can change is your own so if you want to take that risk, after stating all the things that happen to you, then you have no-one to blame but yourself when the day comes that you do get hit.
Yeah, they cycle in other countries but most places have bike lanes-small Bermuda does not. There’s no way in hell that I’d take the chance of riding a push bike on these roads whether I felt it was my right to or not…it’s just not worth the risk.
@The Truth. Really? Are you for real right now?? “Pedal Bikes is becoming an epidemic”? Bicycles are nothing but positives. SUVs, over-powered motorbikes, and idiots in general are the epidemics – oh, and obesity and diabetes – NOT bicycles! Bicycles were here first, share the Road. Better yet, get on one yourself. Selfish people like you are the real “nuisance”.
Truth, what a stupid comment. Pedal bikes are not an epidemic, they are a form of affordable and enviromental transport for many, and a source of exercise for some. The protection that pedal cyclists have is the law, which treats them as a vehicle with all the rights to the road that you enjoy. So slow down and let’s all try and avoid tragedies like thsi.
@Shelta-well maybe it’s time that bike riders (adults) pay some sort of licensing fees for the use of the roads just like everyone else. These bikers come out during rush hour traffic getting in everyone’s way…if they want to exercise, there are plenty of other places to do it or at least pick a convenient time to do it so they don’t get in everyone’s way.
The rest of us pay HUGE licensing fees for the privilege of using the roads so why don’t they? There should at least be some kind of nominal fee for this privilege with the fee possibly going into that national mutual fund (sorry, can’t recall the proper name right now)that pays for damages caused by uninsured vehicles. Many other countries have fees, permits and regulations for this kind of thing but in Bermuda these guys get a free ride. I have personally witnessed a pedal bike rider hit a pedestrian-who pays for that person’s injuries? If they want to use the road, they should pay like everyone else-if not, use the trails.
Also, people like you need to learn to respect other people’s opinions without calling them ‘stupid.’ It tarnishes your point and makes you appear extremely childish. Only kids go around name-calling…adults usually learn some restraint along the way.
Emoni,
Do you ever think that the cyclists are thinking that all the cars are getting in their way? How much less congested would Hamilton be if 25% of all drivers rode bikes and we could make the waterfront a park and not a parking lot.
I can’t think of any countries that require licensing of pedal cycles, but many in Europe that offer large tax incentives to buy a bike. Perhpas the rationale to not have cyclists pay is that unlike cars, they reduce congestions, don’t pollute and don’t inflict wear and tear on the roads.
I hope you can see why myself and others don’t like the arguement that we should forego our legal right to use the roads because people in SUVs can’t pay enough attention to not run over 13 year old kids. It’s not rush hour – it’s all the time. I cycle at 5 a.m. and the attitude of drivers is disgusting and it’s my life at stake.
How do you know that it’s the SUV driver’s fault? Were you there? If not, you’re ASSuming.
At least you have the consideration to ride at 5 a.m but many don’t. They’re out there between 7:30 and 9:00 crawling along like they get a kick out of holding everyone up. If they’re riding to work, fine but many of them aren’t. That’s what frustrates people…they’re the inconsiderate ones because they aren’t making time but have no concern about holding everyone else up. People shouldn’t have to get up a half-hour earlier to accommodate these people who really have nowhere to go and aren’t making time. Why can’t they come out when the traffic dies down. If I were a cyclist I’d have some consideration for others but most of them don’t. Yeah, I get behind their bumpers, too…if they want to ride during rush hour then they need to keep up with the rest of us…I’m not going to be late to work because of them.
All the people on here who are getting offended are the cyclists. You all just don’t get it and have the nerve to call everyone else selfish. You remind me of another selfish segment of society-smokers…they’re willing to kill themselves and get bent out of shape when anyone calls them on it because they don’t care about their health or anyone else’s for that matter, either…you’re the same way. I drive an SUV and I go the speed limit…if you’re not going the speed limit then be damn skippy I’m going to be breathing down your neck…
get a pedal bike so you wont have to pay all those fees fatty!!!!!
@oooo man – I am glad the little guy is doing ok on a general ward but I wanted you to know that picture is very real and not staged, I was there. He couldn’t have been turning into Lukes Pond Road that accident was close to Lukes Pond Road but too far from the enternce for him to be taking a turn into it for sure.
@ Terry – who would be so mischievous and cruel to stage an accident don’t be silly that would have had to include the police, ambulance and fire service taking part in the “staging”. All three services were on the scene of the accident in full force, like I said I was there, unfortunately, backed up in traffic for 1/2 hour. The little boy’s injuries are not “staged” either, he hurts! You shouldn’t make light of someone’s misfortune if you don’t know what you are talking about.
I saw this as well, glad the little boy is ok.
@Shelta. Yes I do have a right to use the roads I pay a heavy license and insurance fee every year you and all the other pedal cyclist don’t pay a cent. Also if someone is slowing down the flow of traffic doing less than the speed limit you can report them to TCD. Source: Bda Police. You do ill if you praise, but worse if you call stupid, what you do not understand. So happy riding.
I trust that the young bike rider and all others are safe and on the road to recovery.
The reason for my post is that I am surprised by some of these comments. You can never tell what happened based on the picture of the accident. As one person posted, the motorbike ended up where it did because the rider did all he could to avoid the pedal bike.
My greater concern is for all road users to take more time and be careful when on Bermuda’s roads. I often ride on the road with both my 6 year old son and 10 year old daughter (and my wife) and I am amazed at how insensitive some road users are. True we will be going slower than motorised traffic but what do you expect, we are using ‘pedal power’ and being healthy, getting good exercise and enjoying family time together.
It is always more fun to take time to enjoy the surroundings as you ride. Perhaps if more families took time to ride together (and I see many that do), there would be less violence in Bermuda and overall health costs would decrease. The recent end to end saw thousands of riders – old, young and in between.
The comments about rush hour seem to be out of place since the accident occurred around 3 pm on a Sunday (and yes I was caught in the traffic delays also). Unfortunately Bermuda is only so big and there is only so much riding that can be done off of the public roads before you want to venture onto the public roads.
To the young man involved in the accident, I hope you get well soon and can enjoy the rest of your summer holiday with your family and friends. To those who complain about pedal cycles on the road – perhaps you should try it and enjoy the tremendous benefits from cycling. And to everyone when you see me and others riding with or without our children, pause and drive safely, especially when you overtake the young ones (they need extra room in case they wobble while you overtake).
I don’t kno who is in the wrong, but there are a lot of children in my area (Hog Bay Level)that ride on the side of the road against on comming traffic. I have seen them ride the whole lenth of hog bay level from the old hitching post right up to maxi mart on the wrong side of the road.
@Anthony Richardson You say you use ‘pedal power’ as being healthier we’ll try joining a Gym or try walking. You can enjoy the beautiful island scenery more and a lot safer and you want have to worry about a wobble or two. And we want have to worry about gas consummation as deceleration and acceleration of your vehicle uses more fuel and pollutes the air more. If the young ones wobble perhaps they should practice in a safe area first.
hopee youu get better k. <3 ilyy :*
I can’t help but comment to the people who don’t think those that ride pedal bikes are “allowed” on the road as specific times of the day…GET OVER YOURSELF!!! It isn’t that hard to overtake a bike and if it holds you back 5 seconds, OH WELL! Not the end of the world! Making a big deal out of something so slight! We all have to deal with all sorts of people on the road – including those in SUV’s who can’t handle a car of that size and drive in both lanes!! I’d much rather simply overtake a cyclist than have my mirror taken off!!
People are in such a rush to go nowhere…and some wonder why they never made it!!
Well said @ Anthony Richardson.
Bottom line – all road users should take more caution.
First of all, I hope the young boy will be up on his feet again and enjoying his summer vacation.
I remember when I was proud to be a Bermudian. I understand that people should voice their mind and let their opinions be heard but Bermudians are so rude and lack compassion now and look for the NEGATIVE in everything. Just check out these comment boards, when there is good happening only few leave comments, when there a topic requiring compassion or something bad, people are quick to rush to judgement. Bermudians need to lighten up, really. Laugh, have a light heart and judge yourself before you judge anyone – that should keep you busy for a while! I love you all!
