July 24, 2012

The Panamanian registered bulk carrier Star Lily diverted to Bermuda yesterday [July 23] after a 52-year-old crew member fell ill and passed away while on-board.

When the Star Lily was approximately 760 miles northeast of Bermuda they contacted Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre reporting they had a crew member seriously ill, however unfortunately the gentleman passed away before they were able to reach the shore.

The cargo ship rendezvoused with the pilot boat St David at Five Fathom Hole off the East End where the body was transferred. Police officers were seen to go out to the cargo ship, with it unofficially understood they conducted a investigation into the crew member’s demise.

A physician was also seen to go out on the pilot boat, with it unofficially understood he was brought on the cargo ship to officially pronounce the death. The crew member’s body will be repatriated to the Philippines, and the cargo ship will continue on to the Mediterranean.
