Bermuda Cancer Centre Invited To Present At UICC
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has been invited to present at the 2012 Union for International Cancer Control [UICC] World Cancer Congress, being held on 27 – 30 August 2012 at the Palais des Congrès, in Montréal, Canada.
In partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will present an E-Poster on the innovative service delivery method this partnership has developed to provide local residents with access to cancer information.
The Bermuda Cancer Information Service [CIS] is a free telephone and online service which provides support to cancer patients, their families, loved ones, and healthcare providers seeking current cancer information and assistance with finding local support services. CIS can be accessed by calling 232-2247 or people may visit www.ccis.bm.
The electronic poster entitled “Bermuda Triangle? – Demystifying Cancer For Patients And Families” is a presentation in PowerPoint format. It will be available for viewing by delegates on rotation on large screens in the vibrant Global Village area of the Congress. Participants will have access to all e-posters on the monitors at any time.
“CIS has been a source of support for many residents” says Rhonda Smith-Simmons, Education Officer, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “Being able to present this service to a world audience is an incredible honour and will hopefully demonstrate how small or underserved countries can successfully partner with existing programmes to meet their needs in a cost-effective manner.
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for close to 8 million deaths each year. Against this devastating background and under the theme “Connecting for Global Impact”, the World Cancer Congress 2012 will offer a unique opportunity to join international experts and advocates in cancer control to focus and exchange information on four main topics: Prevention and early detection, Cancer care and survivorship, Palliation and pain control and Systems in cancer control.
As a full member of the UICC, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has been recognised as an organization that is substantially engaged in cancer control, has appropriate organizational structure, and supports UICC objectives.
The Cancer Information Service is one of the free support services offered by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. The Charity houses an extensive resource and lending library of books and DVD’s on cancer and other health topics. It also provides a computer terminal for use enabling internet access to reliable cancer sites including the Canadian Cancer Society’s cancer encyclopedia and the Bermuda Service Locator, a web based database which lists local support agencies (www.ccis.bm)
