Non Mariners Race Celebrates 40th Anniversary

August 1, 2012

Preparations are in high gear at the Sandys Boat Club as the Society of Non Mariners get set to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their annual Non-Mariners Race in Sandys.

Non-Activities on Sunday [Aug 5] include the Non-Colors Raising, Non-Penguins Fly Past, Non-Noodle Race, Non-Memorial to our Mascot, Non-Calypso Pipe Band, Non-Craft Race, Non-Trophy & Non-Prizegiving, all starting at 11:58am + 27 sec.

Participants usually get started earlier in the morning on the nearby beach building the non-crafts that will attempt to stay afloat or not in the annual non-race.

The event is said to have started decades ago when a group of drinking buddies, for some unknown reason, debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and a few days later ended up attempting to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt is said to be the start of the Non-Mariners Race.

Sandys Boat Club has teamed up with Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] to help promote a litter-free Non-Mariners Race event for 2012. In an effort to reduce littering extra waste barrels and dumpsters will be at Sandys Boat Club and a “Trash Taxi” will be on the water collecting trash from people in the water. After every Non-Mariners event Sandys Boat Club organizes a post-event clean up.

Entry forms are available at Sandys Boat Club and online at their website. Teams can enter right up until the morning of the event with an entry fee of $25 per non-craft. Proceeds from the event are going to the Salvation Army and the Eliza Dolittle Society. For more information telephone 234-2248 or email sbc@logic.bm.

Bernews plans to carry a live video feed of the event on Sunday for those unable to make it.
