Photos: Police Seize Marijuana Plants In Smiths
[Updated] Earlier today [Aug 21] Police seized what appeared to be a fairly large amount of marijuana plants from a location in Smiths parish, with police officers seen removing the plants this afternoon.
The plants were estimated to be well over 6ft tall. A police investigation into this incident is underway, and we will update as able with any additional information. You can view our previous coverage on past seizures of cannabis plants in Bermuda here.

Someone was probably counting on that to pay their bills! Gangsters don’t grow. They buy and import the mexican stuff which, by the time it reaches our shores, has passed through hands of violent thugs.
Don’t quote me on this but a reliable German fellow told me that an individual is allowed to cultivate up to 3 plants within his/her own home. It greatly reduces the price and demand for illegally imported pot. Can’t we try that hat on for size?

Well when you dont know what they are, it could look like a bunch of weeds…. o wait it is weed……haha….. i know that person is hurting bad right now. His/her head is tight. Dont know how they going to pay for things now. Couldnt aford to buy weed any more, tired to go it. O wait, he graduated from Harford…… Love my Bermudians.
Not sure where they found this but when I was a kid the wooded area that spans from Flatts Field over to St. Marks Road was full of small hidden gardens with a few plants. They were easy to spot as well, as all you had to do was follow the paths of broken branches and trampled grass leading to gardens and / or 5 gallon buckets.

What’s the main goal for smoking marijuana? To get high, is it not? Yes it may not be as bad in comparison to other things but it still alters your mind and thus classified a drug. Ok now your missing the point, agreed you will get long term side effects from smoking anything from rubber tires to marijuana, if it was decriminalized you would be able to vaporize or ingest it, the way it was supposed to be, case closed. If your depressed you should try marijuana, it has this awesome chemical in it called dgaf (don’t give a f@ck). We all know what the side effects are of pharmaseuticals, from erectile disfunction to anal bleeding. See the thing is these pharmaseutical companies could come up with cures rather than treatments, but if they did that how would suck the $$$ out of you as you die? Look up the cure for cancer, and why it hasn’t been manufactured, as a person who had 2 close people to me suffer from breast cancer, that enrages me to say the least. Now here’s the kicker, my argument is not thay marijuana has 0 harmful side effects, my argument is that it is the lesser of all evils and illegal, why? I legally have the choice to drink jonny walker or bleach, but the law tells me I can’t make the personal choice to use marijuana in my chosen way. Why? It “appears to be a large amount” because a photo was taken of each officer holding the same bunch of trees. I also like how they kept the all the roots to increase the weight for their records. It must be worth millions according to their calculations, but none of it can even be smoked!

I discagree @sticks & stones. Many, many hurt and many many killed over these plants. Maybe not “these” plants specifically but weed in general. Only idiots continue to believe it is a “harmless” plant. Only an idiot believes that it is not addictive. Only an idiot believes that it is okay to smoke because it’s “natural”! The side effects of the plant and the “trade” of this plant are dangerous and deadly!
I have in my 40+ years known many friends that smoke weed (and only weed)to make stupid choices like ignoring their children while they enjoy a smoke which is anytime the “boys come over”. Known some to say they can’t pay bills or rent but somehow find a way to buy a bag every few days. Sounds like addiction or the killing of brain cells to me! I have seen friends and family change (not for the better)because of this crap. They have become lazy,less concerned about their homes, hygeine, their jobs, their families and what should be important to them.
I have watched the slow and sorry deterioration of many of my friends and family (many of whom were incredibly talented, athletic and intelligent) become lazy and unable to function normally in society and support their families. Im talking about people from all different racial and economic backgrounds! Some with public and some with private school educations and from all parts of the world and from all kinds of neighbourhoods. The only common denominator is the regular smoking of weed that has made them see things in a distorted way.
I know many of you know people just like these I have described. Talented , motivated and wise beyond their years before smoking weed.

As a former Big Brother and Youth Councellor I saw many, many young boys and girls distance themselves from their dope smoking parents! Many of them felt the same way and said the same things about how their mothers and fathers were not the same when they smoked.

Smoking anything is bad for you, you can eat or vaporize marijuana, marijuana is not poisenous, when it bears fruit as a defence mechanism it produces a pungent smell to ward off animals, this pungent smell just so happens to attract us like bees to flowers. Are you attracted to poison ivy?
Just as you can say you know many people who’s lives have been affected by marijuana in a negative way, there are plenty of people that functiom just fine on a daily basis, from all races, cultures and backgrounds. I also like & agree! I know lazy & productive people who smoke cannabis & both types were that way before they started.
I have also noticed that many of the lazy ones who smoke drink alcohol while smoking whereas more of the productive ones don’t smoke & drink at the same time so I think that mix should be factored in. There is also the fact that many are unaware of that there are three varieties Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis that contain different psychoactive molecules or lack of which cause significantly different effects when ingested. Cannabis sativa contain large amounts of CBDs which give the user an energetic feeling of euphoria opposed to Cannabis indica which has large amounts of THC which give the user a mellow, dreamy & relaxed feeling of euphoria. Then there’s Cannabis ruderalis that has little of any psychoactive molecules & doesn’t do anything when ingested.
Other way around tommy.. Sativas have more thc than cbd.. Thc gives the energetic head high CBd gives more body or relaxed high..

I have to disagree with you head up high. The cannabis plant itself is a wonderful for several reasons. The stalk fibres produce paper that is environmentally friendly and of much higher quality than paper made from wood. With its less than a year growth cycle, paper can be produced on a large scale without massive deforestation. The fibres also can be made into a type concrete that is also better for the environment because of its insulation properties. Marijuana seeds are also very high in protein and can be used in cereal or health bars. Additionally clothes, rope, sails, and many other products can all be made from cannabis.
There are several doctors world wide that recognize that marijuana has medicinal properties. I will readily admit that there are people who claim to be medical patients but are really just recreational smokers taking advantage of medical marijuana laws. But there are several legitimate patients. Since marijuana stimulates the appetite, persons with advanced stages of HIV or cancer that are rapidly losing weight due to a lack of appetite greatly benefit from from marijuana. In addition to this, research has shown that it is also beneficial for MS, chronic pain, glaucoma, and other ailments.
When it comes to recreational use, obviously someone that smokes weed everyday is doing harm to themselves. Yes it does make them lazy. But how different is that from someone that drinks alcohol everyday? They too are addicted, become lazy, ignore their children, and cause a host of health problems. It comes down to personal choice. People have to use substances in moderation. Too much of anything is harmful. According to Professor Nutt, the former head of the body in charge of scientific research for drugs in the UK, marijuana use is less dangerous and addictive than alcohol or tobacco.
So when it comes to your friends, without a doubt, they are doing harm to themselves. Moderation is the key, just like moderation with alcohol or moderation with unhealthy foods. They should consume less often and also seek other ways to consume it other than smoking, like making tea or food products.
Agree with everything you said, but moderation or not, alcohol and cigarettes are without a doubt nothing but legal poisons, plain and simple. People think “magic mushrooms” are fun, you aren’t getting high trust me, the effect is just you body combating a poisenous fungus you ingested. Take too many and see what happens. You drink too much alcohol what happens? Your body rejects it in any way it can, usually by throwing up. Take too many mushrooms and you run the risk of either going crazy because your brain isn’t prepared for the psycological effects or death from an overdose of poison, the hallucinagenic effect is your body rejecting the poison. Ingest marijuana or hash and what happens? Other than a feeling of relaxation and general bliss…nothing, no rejection of the substance. Smoking anything is bad for your lungs for obvious reasons, but you could eat marijuana in every dinner/desert and be perfectly fine. As long as it remains illegal we will never have that luxery. Its smoked because you need a lesser amount to do the trick, its not usually eaten here because you would probably need about an ounce for a batch of brownies. Due to prohibition and stupid people pulling trees, this drives the price up so an ounce for brownies isn’t very realistic for most peoples budget. If I told you the price of an ounce you would probably want to grow weed too. Decriminalize it so people can have their freedom of choice back and tax it, within 10 years I guarentee our debt will be gone and our hotels fully booked. Use whatever is left over to make products for a greener environment, 100% use, 0% waste and a ton of new jobs created. I agree with you. We should be using this plant for several reasons… Bermuda’s third economic pillar with marijuana tourism, medical marijuana, and a host of hemp products. We could produce our own paper, building materials, and even environmentally friendly biofuel. But like you said, it will fall on deaf ears. Several decades of misinformation has unfortunately put people’s opinions above scientific data. The average person’s only knowledge of cannabis is the lies that have been perpetuated for so long.

Thats funny because I smoke daily, ran the 24th of May with NO prior training, and finished 13miles with a blown knee at 9miles (knee was a recruit camp regiment injury). At my age I could still tornado kick into a jumping spinning roundhouse kick you in the face, so according to your logic, if I didn’t use marijuana I shoud be walking through walls? For the life of me I can’t comprehend how planting something and it growing is an act that can get you thrown in jail. It’s clearly a natural substance…instead of throwing people in jail, why don’t TPTB take it up with God? Clearly, it’s something that He made, so it must have been for a reason.
I don’t smoke weed, but I don’t think it should be illegal and I think it’s ridiculous that it is. There are prescription drugs out there that act on the body exactly like heroin and are proven to be addictive, but it’s legal. However, pharmaceutical companies make a fortune off supplying them, and Governments get their cut-therefore they don’t want you to grow your own medicines and take money out of their pockets.

You are such a close-minded person that you totally missed my point. There are drugs out there that one can get legally that are just as bad or worse than marijuana. These prescription drugs are stolen by addicts and sold on the streets all the time in the U.S. There was a case recently where a man went into a pharmacy, shot the pharmacist and all the customers inside, and stole prescription narcotics. People actually kill for prescription drugs the same way they do for street drugs. So do we ban prescription narcotics? That will NEVER happen because it’s a money maker for the pharmaceutical industry and pays huge dividends to Governments through taxes.
These drugs have been proven to be addictive. They can destroy lives just as easily as street drugs. People need to go to rehab to get off them just like they do with street drugs. Alcohol kills more people than drugs, but is perfectly legal. Cigarettes kill even more people still. If you smoked a cigarette and a week later had COPD or cancer, it would be banned. However, as it takes years to kill a person, does that make it o.k.? It’s not like we don’t know what cigarettes do to people, including affecting (through second-hand smoke) innocent people who choose not to smoke; yet we still sell them and Governments eagerly reap the benefit of those sales through taxes. It amazes me that pharmacies-a place that is supposed to promote the health and well-being of society sell cigarettes knowing what they do to people, just to make money.
The things we do as a society are so hypocritical it boggles the mind. If TPTB could find a way to track marijuana sellers and tax them like they do alcohol, cigarettes and prescription drugs they would. However, they know it’s impossible to do that so they make growing it illegal. It’s crazy how many things are motivated by money, and how much propaganda is being fed to us-it would make North Korea proud. Spoke to God & she/he/they told me poison ivy contains rhus toxicodendron which can be used to treat skin diseases, osteoarthritis, rheumatism, rheumatic fever, viral infections, cramps, sprains, restless leg syndrome, backaches, joint pain and stiffness. Every plant on this earth has a purpose so to criminalize the use of plants of any kind in their natural form is to undermine humanity & its relationship with nature. Oh & by the way poison ivy has a toxicity which is obvious just by touching it whereas cannabis has scientifically proven not to be toxic at all.
Here’s food for thought there is a plant that generates a toxic chemical to poison its predators. I’m confused, are you saying that the people that commented are marijuana growers? Honestly I’ve grown one tree in my life and it was amazing for lack of a better word, never made a habbit of it, cultivation is far more serious than possession. As far as people taking your crop, well it could be decriminalized, taxed and thus grown in a secure fenced area with security guards or in a secure facility, but until that day I suggest securing a piece of re-bar to a tree and tying it back to a trip wire. You want my crop? Sure, that will be 2 broken shins please…would you like help carrying that to your car?

I hear the PLP are considering legalizing cannabis as the only way to get out of debt. Quickly. Marijuana tourism is the answer to our financial problems. Legalize it and watch the tourists flock to our shores, just like we did with alcohol during Prohibition during our tourism heyday! That’s how the great age of tourism started in Bermuda.
