Police Investigate Shooting In Smiths, No Injuries
[Updated] A short while before midnight [Aug 1] police converged on South Road in Smiths after what we understand to be a shooting. The stretch of road in front of John Smith’s Bay is blocked off, with at least four police cars, bikes and multiple police officers in the area.
Police officers could be seen searching the ground with flashlights in the area in front of John Smiths Bay, with a focus on the area by the bus stop. They also walked closer to the beach area — which has a few tents set up for Cup Match — and appeared to search that as well.
At approximately 12.15am the Police Forensic Unit arrived on the scene and began their work. A few area residents making their way home drove up, waited, and turned around after realizing the road would be blocked for some time.
Unofficial reports indicate that a small group of people were standing on South Road in the area by the bus stop when two people on a motorbike rode up and opened fire, shooting at least two times. No one appears to have been injured, however we we will update with official information as able.
Update 1.42am: The Forensic Unit has left the scene. The police remain on scene and the road is still blocked.
Update 2.02am: The road has been re-opened to traffic.
Update 11.50am: The police confirmed the incident, their full statement is below.
“At 11:30pm on Tuesday police responded to a report of a firearms incident that took place in the parking lot of John Smiths Bay in Smiths Parish.
It appears that two males on a motorcycle entered the parking lot area and discharged a firearm, however no one was injured. The two men then made good their escape on a motorcycle.
An investigation into this incident has commenced with officers from the Serious Crime Unit and they are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have seen two men on a motorcycle in the area of John Smith’s Bay acting suspiciously to please contact Sargent Jason Smith on 2950011 or the confidential crime stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
The Bermuda Police Service cannot see it all. We NEED the public’s help, if you see something that makes you feel uncomfortable simply contact the Police; let’s all work together to make this Cup Match Holiday a safe one.”
Cup Match craziness starting early.
What can I say, I know where my 20 yr old kid is. I wonder how many parents even care where their kid is
Its ridiculous that we can’t have ɑ safe cupmatch without all this damn unnecessary violence
Emancipation Day People – Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery none but ourselves can free our mind..
Cupmatch time in Bermuda….bakahna lol
WTH…. Really…. Though REALLY?!?!?! I’m not surprised of the shooting but damn ppl I along with young son and godchildren are suppose to be camping right next to that spot. I am just so grateful that we weren’t there last night…. STOP this BS seriously
I agree with you Ashlee.. They don’t even care about the children and the community. The violence needs to subside..
We just need a B.O.P.E. Look it up.
this cannot be classified as violence, just plain and simple stupidity!
@Serious Though – if you don’t consider this type of action violence maybe you should stop by MAWI and get your head examined over the Holiday weekend!!
“Violence is defined by the World Health Organization as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against a person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. This definition associates intentionality with the committing of the act itself, irrespective of the outcome it produces.”
@ So Done….You are right – Although I think I know what Serious Though is trying to say…. No matter how you look at it , gun crimes are both stupid and violence!!
That should be violent!
YO MOTHER F#%$^ it’s Cupmatch chill with this crap.
OMG! Just left area prior to this madness! Sad nonsense! No care for others safety. I know they will be arrested, hopefully soon!
Us Bermudians are a joke must be the only country who celebrate our holiday by shooting at each other !
Someone took their camping spot they had for years…
@ SS…..You think this is a joke??? Mmm….seems you left the A off your name!
Come on Bermuda!! Let us have a good holiday!! Think about what you are doing to your country!!
No i don’t think its a joke, but you have to have some humor to enjoy the holiday. No one knows what it was about last night so shut up and stop name calling. Fool!
Like I said….@ss…. Not matter the situation – a warning, showing off, what ever the case – gun violence is not called for!! It needs to stop!!! You obviously have no sense – try reading your comment and tell me if you are using any common sense! Not so common……
Oh ok, so this is a very unfortunate event and I hope the situation doesn’t escalate. But what I find amazing is the level of interest and comments from this article. Why can’t we glorify the positive happenings in Bermuda as much as we highlight the unfortunate events that are happening in society. Just have a look at what the PHC Foundation is doing for our young. Also have a look at the relative number of comments to this good news…

Those two men on a bike again! Are they the same two men in every incident?
