78-Yr-Old Arrested After Striking Parked Trailer

September 4, 2012

[Updated - A 78-year-old taxi driver struck a parked cargo trailer on Front Street, and was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, and failed the alco-analyser test.]

Traffic flow is being diverted away from a portion of Front Street this afternoon [Sept 4] due to a collision between a taxi and a container trailer.

The accident occurred shortly after 1:00pm, with it appearing that a taxi was heading east on Front Street by the Supermart when it veered off course into the back of an open stationary container.

A police spokesperson said: “Motorists are advised that due to a reported damage only collision on Front Street, traffic traveling out of the City of Hamilton along Front Street is currently being diverted up Court Street. However, traffic traveling into the City of Hamilton is still able to proceed along Front Street.

“Once the collision has been cleared, traffic will be allowed to flow along Front Street as per normal again. The patience and cooperation of the motoring public is appreciated during this temporary traffic diversion.”

Update 2.08pm: The collision has been cleared, and the traffic is now flowing normally on Front Street.

Update 6.12pm: The 78-year-old taxi driver was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, and failed the alco-analyser test.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 1pm on Tuesday, September 4th police and first responders were dispatched to a reported two vehicle damage only collision at the junction of Front Street and Fagan’s Alley in the City of Hamilton.

“It appears that a taxi was traveling along Front Street when it collided with a parked cargo trailer. The driver of the taxi, a 78 year old Southampton man, was not injured and later arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. He subsequently failed the alco-analyser test and was detained.

“The taxi sustained extensive front end damage. Traffic traveling out of the City of Hamilton along Front Street was temporarily diverted up Court Street as a result; however the section of Front Street where the collision occurred has since returned to normal traffic flow. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing and a court appearance for the taxi driver is anticipated in due course.”

Check the driver’s cellphone & texting records.

Can’t be used as evidence, judge threw out clear evidence of innocence in a recent case with an untruthful police officer, if they do that I guess the person can appeal and reclaim their $$$.

  3. Cha says:

Not really surprising given the way Taxi drivers drive on this island. Probably the worst drivers on the road and they make a living off it. They should have higher standard for taxi drivers and increased penalties if they get caught with an infraction. It really is appalling the way some drive.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

The killing thing is that they pay the least to use the road to earn their profits, about the same as a class A car, yet they moan & moan & moan about costs.

    • More with less says:

It makes me so frustrated when a taxi just slows down and stops in the road or decides to turn with no thought to out on an indicator. Indicators are there for a reason, please use them.

      • Eastern says:

Or how about this one……your driving along the road and you see a taxi pull up to a stop sign on your left, he looks you right in the eye (to make sure you see him) and then pulls out in front of you forcing you to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting him. This happens on almost a dailey basis.
Taxi drivers are by far the worst drivers on the road.

        • say it like it is. says:

Or this one, a U turn WHEREVER AND WHENEVER they like….I just shake my head in disbelief. The absolute worst drivers in history.

        • Onion says:

My personal favourite is when they switch lanes by just moving into it and then turning on their indicator. I alsmot hit two taxis in the same week outside of M&M’s because of this.

    • Family Man says:

He’ll probably argue that he had a BIG bowl of fish chowder at lunch and someone must have put a little extra black rum in the chowder.

After all, at his age um sure he has it all figured out… Medication takes longer to digest with juice. It fermented your honor…

  9. Time to pack It In says:

What in heaven’s name is a 78 year old doing driving taxi anyway, I think after 75 they should stop, most 78 year olds are not in the best of health and when you add alcohol to the equation it’s even worse.

    Just my opinion

Again, we can add this to the list of why tourists are not coming. Stinky run-down beach toilets, gangs attacks on buses, and drunk taxi drivers. The list keeps on growing but its the bloggers faults right?
