  1. Welcome to Earth says:

I’ll welcome the day ponies can strap humans to a harness and race us around a field whether we feel like it or not-all for their entertainment…

    • Josephkerr says:

If you eat meat I don’t want to hear it. And don’t even say that animals are killed in humane ways. Killing and humane do not belong in the same sentence.

  2. Ayisha says:

This sport is ridiculas. I could understand just the ponies racings, but please, is there any reason to have them lugging around big carriages while racing?? How the heck is a pony supposed to build up speed and room to overtake pulling those huge things. Moreover, theres been a number of accidents recently, so this is border lining becoming animal cruelty because if the ponies weren’t racing they wouldn’t be any accidents. Also, I don’t see why ponies/horses should be whipped, if you whipped a dog you would be sent to prison, so whats the difference? SPCA??

    • ... says:

The sulkies are light and not as big as you think. Also, when whipping, it may look as though the pony is being hit, but that is not the case – as it is not allowed under any cIrcumstance- the driver is hitting the shaft of the cart.

  3. thankful says:

Thankful the riders and ponies are ok..

  4. Happy Pony! says:

Such ignorant comments should be kept to yourselves.
When you all get your facts straight and can post something worth reading then come back and post something intelligent.

  5. mike's shadow says:

Ayisha, I hope that one day, you can come to our track and see for yourself that these ponies love to race. There have been a few accidents happen but they are not the norm. As in any sport, this is not what we leave home to do, we leave home to go and have a successful day of racing. Its unfortunate that people open they mouths wide and don’t know what they are talking about. If you would like to know what harness racing is about, come to our races and someone will be more than happy to talk with you.

    • smh says:

“these ponies love to race”… Oh please!!! Unless you speak horse language and they told you that themselves please ZIP IT!!! These animals were not made for that purpose!

      • ER says:

Well I do not claim to speak “animal” however one can tell a happy pony from one that is not happy and when these ponies are getting ready to race you can see that they cannot wait to get out there…whilst they are running they appear to be just as happy and even after they finish none seem to be to upset whether they win or lose…seeing ponies getting ready to go out for a jog and the excitement that they display makes be believe that they are not “hurting”. Believe me I am one huge bleeding heart and at first had reservations about the sport…but spending time at the track and around a stable I changed my mind. The sulkies are light (even I could pull one) and none of the drivers are that heavy. But there will always be people that have their opinions all I can say if you have been close enough to the sport and still feel this way then fine but if you have not then do not judge from a distance.

How about good job at John ambulance.

    • mike's shadow says:

Many thanks for the care that is given by St Johns Ambulance personnel and to members and friends of DHPC who spring into action when any incident arises, and they all volunteer their time. Much appreciated. While we do our best to make sure everyone is safe, unfortunately accidents do happen, and we don’t like to see any of our ponies or drivers hurt or injured.

  7. WoW says:

Gosh glad the rider got up and walked to the ambulance and he looked ok. Hope the pony is ok to after running into the truck. Praying for a speedy recovery for both and prayers for them.
Looked like everyone there helped out and kept everything under control. Good Job to all.

  8. Storm a Comin says:

@smh… Do you speak horse language? I don’t speak dog language but it is pretty easy to tell when my dog likes to do something and when she doesn’t. So tell me what purpose these animals were made for? I’m sure that dogs weren’t made to be dressed up in silly clothes and run through mazes at dog shows. I don’t ever hear people complaining about horse shows and riding horses. What really is the difference? Perhaps we should just let all the animals run free. Surely that is what nature intended. I’m the one SMH because some of these comments are truly ignorant.

  9. maybe says:

How come the people who know the least about something make the most noise? Maybe those persons that are so hell bent on harness racing being cruel, unnecessary, etc should educate themselves by coming to the races, see it for themselves, talk to someone that does know, and then they might have a different outlook. I wonder if they complain about other sports as well, or if they are at home on the couch and on a computer spreading falsehoods.

I have raced ponies here for over 30years. I started when I was 14 and I’m 46 now. Accidents happen in ANYTHING we do. We could get out of bed and fall so wat we shouldn’t get out of bed? Hello. I have bin down a couple of times on the track and yes the track is very hard when youi land on it. Bin there done that. Before people open their mouth they should think first. As for whipping we hit the shafts of the sulky not the pony. As for the person who said about hooking the people to the sulkys well papa I would love to hook your ass up to the car you drive everyday and let you pull that. You don’t know what your saying so you should shut your mouth and go and get in your box. Wat I do have a problem with is young rookie kids being able to race in a fast time bar. I think they should only be allowed to go to a certain time bar for the first year. Like I said before accidents happen in anything we do not just in harness racing
