Swan: Frommer’s Warnings To Gays/Disabled

September 10, 2012

Warnings in the Frommers travel guide to gay and lesbian travelers, as well as the disabled, need to be addressed by the Bermuda Department of Tourism and the Government,  UBP MP Kim Swan said.

Mr Swan said: “The question of whether Bermuda is a welcoming, fair and equitable society has been called into question in the Frommers travel guide where its advisories about Bermuda provide a clear warning to Gay and Lesbian Travelers and also to Travelers with Disabilities in its and ‘Tips for Travelers with Disabilities’ sections which clearly states:

Think twice before planning a holiday on Bermuda. Although many gays live in and visit Bermuda, the island is rather repressive to homosexuals…

And..

Bermuda is not a great place for persons with disabilities who are not planning to stay on-site at a resort….. Getting around the island is a bit difficult for the agile …. It is difficult to walk with a cane outside of St. George and City of Hamilton …. Taking a taxis to everything you want to see can be very expensive …

“These advisories need to be addressed forthwith by the Bermuda Department of Tourism in particular and the government more generally,” said Mr Swan

“Whilst we encourage the discerning to experience Bermuda and our people for themselves, it is in our best interest to address the infrastructure and social concerns in the advisory dissuading the disabled persons from visiting Bermuda.

“It is important to address considering the high volume of persons vacationing on cruise ships, the reasonable accessibility available in the towns where the ports are located and the amount of physically challenged persons the live in Bermuda.

“The advisory directed at Gays and Lesbian Travelers is extremely serious with far reaching repercussions for Bermuda as a welcoming destination for all people,” continued Mr Swan.

“Whilst discrimination against anyone is wrong, this travel advisory publication is suggesting that Bermuda as a society has the propensity to discriminate against a certain segment of society – in this case the Gay and Lesbian community.

“The implications of such an advisory can already be harmful for Bermuda. For example, a Gay or Lesbian CEO or Business Owner’s company could easily be dissuaded from recommending Bermuda for a convention of predominantly non gay colleagues based on the advisory issued by Frommer’s.

“There are numerous other hypothetical situations. The use of the word repressive to describe Bermuda’s attitude is strong language for a travel guide. The definition being “inhibiting or restraining the freedom of a person or a group of people.”

“We reiterate that the Bermuda Department of Tourism must immediately reach out to Frommers. Although the Frommers advisory is an immediate issue for the Bermuda Department of Tourism, it also is a matter that also impacts on all of us as a society,” concluded Mr Swan.

…err reach out and tell Frommers what? That what they typed is untrue??? Smh pick something you can legitimately defend while looking for politricking platforms!

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Hmm: How about passing the Human Rights Amendment (and while we are at it, take the decision for action or non-action on any particular case out of the hands of the Minister and give the Human Rights Commission some teeth)? That would make a difference to Frommers and to visitors, I am sure.

      • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

The HRA is well overdue for Bermuda. What’s the hold up?

      • theothersidebda says:

I am not suggesting that they should or shouldn’t pass the HRA, but I fail to see to connection between passing thg HRA and this Frommers statement. Do you really think people’s attitude’s towards gays will magically change if they passed HRA? Doubtful, so that’s not the real issue then. Making something legal (or illegal for that matter) often doesn’t address the problem.

As far as diabilities….well the vast majority of bus stops let you out on to a street bordered by a bush…half the time I need to ‘suck it in’ just to get by the bus and I don’t have a disability. So not sure what can be done to address that given Bermuda’s roads.

  2. Union Member says:

Good Point Mr. Swan, this is something that should be formerly and individually addressed. Without it becoming a political football I hope leaders will lead us in changing the perception to a society that is respectable to all regardless of race, gender, age, sexuality etc. Also our ministries have the tools to address the issues of the diasbled, they need to simply work together.

  3. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

WOW!! No commentary!! How very interesting. This travel report was predictable, and predicted. Now what?!?

We are willing to consider gambling with its well-documented and proven risk of damage to our families and our society. There has been no statistics – not one – that indicate places that have even gone so far as to allow gay marriage have experienced any negative results – except, of course, from the negativity of those that are in opposition.

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

      AGREED 100%

    • Bermudians jus Talk says:

We r talkn about a lifestyle!Stop tryna IMPOSE Your Lifestyle on Society!!!!Watever u do in ur Home is your Business,i dnt wanna see it when i go to the park wit my Kids!Bein a drug addict and a murderer is a lifestyle i guess they’ll be askin 4 rights as well!!!!!!Free Buju!!!!

      • say it like it is. says:

awwww, so you don;t care if they do what they do, just not around you, is that it? Well, you are narrow minded as well. These gay people have every right to live and work among us, you may not even know until he pinches you on the deriere, teh heh….

      • Let's Think About This... says:

What exactly is “it” that you’re oh so afraid of seeing when you go to the park?

  4. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Bernews: what happened to the Most Commented section? Some items I like to go back and catch up on comments, or sometimes I might miss a hot topic, or sometimes, I want check if someone has responded to my (or someone else’s) comment. Please bring it back.

    • Bernews says:

Sorry about that…it is however still there…on the bottom of homepage as a temporary measure.

We are moving it back to where it was, and adding ‘latest comment’, plus fixing a multitude of other little, but annoying, things.

Our progress plans were interrupted by Leslie, as the storm reporting took up the bulk of our time recently…

  5. Triangle Drifter says:

In publications like Frommers don’t expect any changes anytime soon. My tour business, which had a glowing review from Frommers, ceased operations in 2006, one of the victims of the Platinum Period. 2007 it was still in Frommers. 2008, it was still in Frommers. 2010 & 2012 I was still getting occasional calls referencing Frommers.

The damage is done. Even if fixed tomorrow the ‘unfriendly to gays’ stigma will hang over us for the next 5 years.

Thankyou Bermuda churches. You are cutting the throats of those who support you. The colour of gay money is the same as everyone else’s.

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

Agreed…actually the color of gay money money is greener. The impact they have on gay friendly countries is enormous. Pay attention Bermuda. You have an opportunity here if you want to save yourself. The gay community is far, wide and sit in high places in the corporate world and in society. You don’t want to continue this type of behavior if you want to survive.

      • Soooooo says:

Exactly, Bermuda has the chance to be on the leading edge of torisim for our reigon, Aruba is now allowing “Commitment Cerimonies” but is yet to go the marrage route. Bermuda needs to get on the wagon before (once again)it gets left behind.

I have lots of friends all over the world that are gay, these people are Doctors, Lawers, business owners. The kind of people that stay in best hotels and drink the best wine. The big spenders…The people we NEED to re-vitalize our tourism industry.

        • say it like it is. says:

totally agree with you, but Lawyers is spelled this way.

          • Soooooo says:

Yeah, comes with doing two things at once (or just can’t type)

  6. Local says:

I hope all you homophobic Bermuda residents are happy now. Sadly it doesn’t convey that the majority of Bermudians don’t really care about your sexual orientation, and just want you to visit and have a good time

    • Bermudians jus Talk says:

Sounds like All of u will bend ova 4 a dollar!!!LOllllllll,Thats the spirit Money ova Morals!!!

  7. Local says:

“your” and “You” refers to visitors!!!!! (and locals….)

  8. DON'T CAVE IN!! says:

Who cares if the gays don’t come here. we are better off with out them i am so sick and tired of hearing about them. You brainwashed people think it’s natural. A blind man can see that it just doesn’t match, a man and a man or a woman and a woman??!!

    • Soooooo says:

Hell we might as well say the same about the rich old people with their canes, walkers and wheelchairs…. Hell why have tourists at all….

And really, why is it not you that’s brainwashed into thinking that it isn’t natural (many animals and birds in the wild do it).

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

So what if I said…who cares if tourists comes to Bermuda or not; tourist (no matter who they are) are better off not coming there, spending money in a place that is infested with people who have no sense of who they are, gangs, drugs and hate, and that we are sick and tired of hearing about it all and want no parts of it and spread the word through social media? I wonder who would be the brainwashed people then? Get your head out of other people’s bedroom’s. It’s consuming you.

    • say it like it is. says:

get a grip bye. We need people, any kind of people, who spend, spend and spend more. Don;t be an idiot, we are drowning here.

    • Let's Think About This... says:

How about I discriminate against your way of thinking, and insist that you leave least you keep Bermuda from moving forward? But I’d be just as debilitating if I did. Most of Bermuda does not care who does what to who in their homes as long as it’s consented to. All we care about is that you contribute positively to society.

As the song says, “…see the world through the eyes of Stevie Wonder…” He sang with Elton John with just as much as heart as he sang with Celine Dion and all the other artists he performed with. Stevie Wonder can’t see Elton John or Celine Dion. All he can do is feel the talent that each has, and appreciate them for it. He doesn’t care who they love. I dare to say the blind man is better off than those who can see because he can’t see the divisions everyone else has set up.

  9. Like Reall says:

Is this really hurting us or is there other issues we need to address to vitalize tourism in bermuda. because with jamaica being the most homophobic country in the world, their airports are NEVER empty and I have seen this for my own eyes. So really is this stopping ppl from comming here or just propaganda to get gay rights in Bermuda? To be honest if we are so homophobic than why we dont have gay ppl being killed left and right by angry ppl? Everyone deserves to be treated fairly and not exclusively from the rest whether you are gay or straight.

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

When was the last time you went to Jamaica? Next time you go, open you eyes real wide. Gays are going to Jamaica by large numbers. Why? Think long and hard about it and get your head out of the sand.

  10. chingo bingo says:

  11. CHEEKUMS BI says:

Local and all others like you seem to be heterophobic, there nothing wrong with people not accepting a gay lifestyle that does not make them homophobic, what’s wrong with people just coming to Bermuda as PEOPLE as VISTORS,

Why would you broadcast and announce your disturbing lifestyle to a people who clearly reject that, but the same people will accept you as a human being but reject your lifestyle? A person who commits any sin, if they are bold enough to broadcast their sin and they wear their sin with pride then naturally people will not be to comfortable with that.

Imagine a pedophile announcing that he is a pedophile with no shame…imagine a drunkard announcing his sin, imagine a fornicator and an adulterer, announcing their sin, how would you expect people to act who are considered religious and fighting within themselves, not to commit sin, but fall short every day, but they do not announce their sin they struggle to be better.

How would you expect people like that to respond to people or groups of people that feel no way about their sin nor do they seek forgiveness for their sin. How do you expect us to respond.

If you’re a sinner..which all of us are(ALL OF US) why not have some shame and some dignity and conceal your sin , keep it to yourself, and when and only when the majority of the world is entrenched in the sin that you love so much, then by all means seek your support and live in peace.
But why try to coerce the society into accepting something that they clearly do not want. Are you afraid of what the heterosexuals viewpoint is on homosexuals, are you afraid of what Bermuda has to say by referendum (the people that really matter) about the situation. That makes you a heterophobic, to the ideals and beliefs of heterosexuals.
Bottom line just be a good human being and stop trying to force something on the society when majority of the society rejects it. Then no one would judge you.
    cheekums bie

  12. US Observer in Pink Sand says:

@ CHEEKUMS BI – I think the bottom line question is, why cut of the very hands that feed you? Gays have jobs, go on vacation, etc etc etc…they are no different than the main stream society and actually most of them live better lives than most. Gays are clear about who they are, they have the money to spend. If you are a business owner are you going to stop people from coming in if you suspect or even heard that they are gay? What color do you think their money is, pink? lol

  13. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

@ Cheekums Bi: Unfortunately, people here have been known to refuse services to folks just because they SUSPECT they are gay (even when they weren’t doing anything remotely overt). We have had murders and folks being beaten up. Worse, we have had people commit suicide because of the way they were treated. So much for “hate the sin, love the sinner.”

“How would you expect people like that to respond to people or groups of people that feel no way about their sin nor do they seek forgiveness for their sin. How do you expect us to respond.”
Not everyone considers same-sex orientation a sin, especially when it involves two consenting adults.

By the way, Alcoholism is not a sin, it is a sickness, a disease fitting all the criteria for classification as such.

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

Sly my thoughts exactly…but hey, when you know better, you do better.

    • theothersidebda says:

@Pastor Syl: Just to be clear, are you suggesting that the practice of homosexuality is NOT stated as a sin in the Bible? (regardless of age or consent)…This is a genuine question.

  14. In reality telling us that we are chasing away tourist because we wont legislate gay rights is the biggest farce I have heared, people will not visit these shores in droves if we are constantly out pricing ourselves and have very little and next to no hotel beds to offer and especially at affordable rates,so we dont need to be trying to politicalize our position as a tourist destination being effected by not reconizing the gay community openly.

When two people get on an airplane and decide to travel as travel companions to any destination,I have never seen them wearing a sign on their chest saying I am gay or I am homophobic, straight, christian or any other wise.so why do we feel the need to give special rights to a group who is already covered under the present law, even to the point if two men where in a room having sex with each other we can no longer arrest them as under the previous law,so we dont need to advance this crap any further.

Who you choose to screw behind close doors is your own business and if it be wrong through an adulteress affair or out right homosexuals and lesbians, the consequences is on you as an individual but does not need to be flaunted in the face of the general public,so I am trying to keep it as real as I can and as clean as I can, keep your damn filth to your self and atleast we can try not to expose our children to so much Imoral behaviour.we have enough that are children are expose to that we are trying to get dealt with, then to add on something that is totally against the order of nature,no p— in the rear of anyone has never produced a baby and no vaginal activity connecyed to the same sex has ever produced a child so IT IS AN ACT AGAINST THE ORDER OF NATURE,I dont expect the rights to stop until they feel they have all the rights as marriage, insurance, etc.

The good part is that there are those and maybe few in number that will stand and declare what the Bible taeches and the creator of ths entire universe and maybe some will differ some on religous belief but the majority from muslim to christian and in between still believe in the order of nature, animals dont evn go against the order of nature and we as humans were created greated then the beast of the field and in the image and likeness of God himself,so I support the recent comments made in the Media by Bishop LLoyd Duncan and ask that when the time does come that we as Bermudians regardless of belief come together and stand flat footed against any and all proposals put forth to support the homosexual agenda and lets not be one sided and think it is males here only because Bermuda has more lesbians then male homosexuals in it and that is another area we need to get real about.

They are more secure in who they are becasuse they can camoflauge it better and fit right in but there are those that know you and see you and you aint fooloing no one but yourselves and at the end of the day they are human and people will be people the world over but God loves us all but wont tolorate our mess.so I throw my self in the mix as an ex homosexual and dont back down or bite my words on this topic, so to Mr. Swan be careful on this topic and look inwardly to your own conviction and realize this issue is an issue but greater minds and likeness in the sight of God will prevail regardless of the outcome.

I dont fear what the law makers do or not do but know it is my duty as a believer to stand firm in my belief and know that I will not go gay bashing but stand for truth and if it sounds like condemnation to some then they really dont know me.so make sure we are true to who we are and our convictions, the majority of gay people in this country are not fighting for any rights because they know as human beings that they already have rights just like the main stream and the ones that are so called fighting in a splinter group of whom some want to be reconized as making history because they fought to change the status quo and would go donw in history in being known for such but their reward will still await them before they leave this life and after if they dont change and do the right thing,I am just merely a messenger and enjoy a moment of knowing who I am and whose I am even with my flaws and faults that I aint trying to legalise or get special rights for.

    • DarkSideOfTheMoon says:

You certainly have a lot to say, you must think about this a lot…

      • Nothing to think about when you have lived it you can speak to it and sometimes if there are those that are still living it that cant truly appreciate the reality of what they are living until they come out from out of it,that is why you have ex gang members that are better off at helping to get a grip on crime because they know where the rat holes are and were they like to hybernate,so the same can be said here were there are those that will sincerely live this lifestyle and want to just be left alone while others in this lifestyle have a whole different agenda. old saying says show me your company and i will tell you who you are holds alot of what is not being said by what is being said and yes I choose my words and my fights very carefully.I am not always spot on but never to far from the real deal either.thanks for your observation because regardless if you oppose or agree you are paying attention and my prayer is something said will hopefully make sense sown the road a little further as situations unfold.

  15. DarkSideOfTheMoon says:

I’m still trying to figure out why less than 10% of the population scares the pants off the majority so much….

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

Actually the numbers are much higher than 10%…but we will never truly know unless there is a anonymous census.

      • Soooooo says:

If all the Bermudian’s who have been forced overseas the number would grow considerably

  16. CHEEKUMS BI says:

@US Observer in Pink Sand…..its not a matter of cutting off the hand that feeds us because Bermuda is welcoming to all people, if your gay then hey kool that’s fine with me, but before you visit a place you should know that people are not fine with you BROADCASTING your lifestyle and forcing it on them.
What makes you think that two males going to a movie holding hands and kissing, would not receive odd looks and sounds of disgust, and people verbally announcing their disgust. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT CHANGING THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT WILL STOP PEOPLE FROM BEING DISGUSTED WITH THAT BEHAVIOUR???
It wont, however if you come to the island and enjoy the island and don’t try to force your way of life on us then we wont pry into your life.
And there is plenty of homosexuals in Bermuda in Government and at other jobs, but they at least have the decency to live their life and not broadcast it ,so they are left alone and they are respected and they have normal lives in Bermuda. NO owner in today’s time is going to turn away gay people unless they are in his shop grabbing each others buttocks and giggling like lil school girls

    @Pastor Sly Hayward,

1st prove those cases where people were refused services because they suspected that a person is gay???

2nd There is more people dying and being beaten up by gangs than there is people being beaten up because they are gay.

3rd if a person commits suicide then there is no one to blame but the person who too their own life. Suicide is a selfish act, life is a struggle and to give up shows weakness and to kill yourself shows selfishness.

4th the only people that don’t consider same sex orientation between a man and a man or a woman and a woman is those who are considered homosexual, and homosexuality is a lifestyle so those who agree that a man can be with a man and that that is not a sin then they are in full agreement with homosexuality ..which makes that person a homosexual by default not by the heinous act of male on male sex but by agreeing with the act in their heart

Lastly if alcoholism is not a sin then tell why nothing but bad comes from being an alcoholic, nothing positive comes from that. You choose to destroy your life and the life of those around you and your saying that that is not a sin???? What rock do you live under?

    • Soooooo says:

@CHEEKUMS BI….”What makes you think that two males going to a movie holding hands and kissing, would not receive odd looks and sounds of disgust, and people verbally announcing their disgust. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT CHANGING THE HUMAN RIGHTS ACT WILL STOP PEOPLE FROM BEING DISGUSTED WITH THAT BEHAVIOUR???”

Not so many years ago if a black man and a white woman (or vice versa) walked into a movie holding hands and kissing many people would have been discusted by the behaviour… now it’s common and freely accepted, why? because society has changed, How? Because people fought for what is right and fair.

This is no different than women, blacks or any other preson fighting for their rights. We are all created equal and should be treated as such.

      • CHEEKUMS BI says:

        @soooooooo
There is no way in hell you can attribute homosexuality with slavery and equal rights, Black people were slaves…show me where any of these “gay people” have a history of slavery and laws written against them, show me where in our history signs were put up saying no gays allowed..
Show me where gays were hung from trees while people stood around happy…show me where gays were never allowed to vote…show me where gays had their history stripped from them…wth are you talking about there is no way you cant compare this with slavery and blacks fighting for their rights

        • Soooooo says:

Did I mention anything about slavery? And for your information White people were slaves too, the black race does not hold a monopoly..

Anyway.. all you have to do is use your fingers and google,,, There are numerous accounts of people being hung because they are Gay… (even a youtube video if you want to watch) not to mention the number of beatings in the US in recent years….

So you feel that the Gay Bermudians that have had to leave their country because they cannot be who they are, have not had their history stripped from them?…. Maybe you should ask a few

And while we’re at it… how would you clasify a homophobe man who has sex with his wife “against the order of nature”?

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

First, my name is S-Y-L, not Sly, unless you are trying to insult me.

      In answer to your questions:
      1. I can give you a name and telephone number of someone to whom this happened, where the waitress actually told the person why she was refusing to serve him.

      2. Since we have had a spate of gang-related murders, you are possibly right, but there is no way you could prove your theory, because many gay people do not report abuse, since there is always the risk of secondary trauma inflicted by the attitudes of the police and/or courts, if it should get that far. Like rape, many gay people experience shame and guilt and question whether they “deserved” the abuse.

      3. I happen not to agree with you about suicide. Having been close to the act myself and having counselled some who contemplated it, I know that suicide can seem the only option when life appears hopeless. When one is that deeply depressed, it can appear impossible to find other options. Feeling the way you do, I hope no-one you love ever turns to you for help because they are feeling suicidal. Your attitude would probably just push them right over the edge.

      4. You are not the first to accuse me of being a homosexual, and I am sure you won’t be the last. Since you don’t pay my rent or my salary, your opinion is none of my business. Your logic leaves something to be desired however. Believing that human beings are entitled to live and work without fear of discrimination now makes me a homosexual?! Yeah, Ok, right!

  17. US Observer in Pink Sand says:

Duane you made your points very clear and you have every right to voice your opinion which you did. However, this subject is just the tip of the iceberg as to why tourist are not coming to Bermuda, a few of which you have mentioned. In saying that, it is quite obvious that Bermuda as a whole has alot of work to do on all topics of discussion, not just gays. On this specific subject, and I am sure you are aware of, there are more homosexuals not only in Bermuda but also worldwide that we will never be able to account for however you will never know who they are truly are. It’s an epidemic and has become a part of the culture fabric we call society. At the end of the day it won’t matter because people will go to where they feel comfortable and allowed to be who they are. They do and will have a choice and if Bermuda is still naive in that they are this rich country and won’t need revenue, then so be it. Any operating country is a business, a storefront. I don’t think the govt would care what you or anyone else’s opinions are when it affects revenue. Money is money no matter where or who its coming from.

    • Money in itself is not evil but the love of money as quoted in the Holy Bible is and to them that love money more then self, there is your gateway to destruction, now put the Bible context to the side so we dont get wrapped around religion but take a look at most western civillized countries that are suffering greatly at this hour and look at the core reason why,GREED? has taken over so many leaders and contries and it’s citizens that we all suffer because of it and the decisions they make on our behalf.

The Arab nations some of the wealthiest in the world and dont want for nothing but yet the cost of oil keeps skyrocketing out of orbit and we are effected from the gas pump to the cash register in the store,so if you think that a ship full of gays or partial visits here and there is going to change that fact,I say hog wash.if we focus on our product and make it affordable here and pleasurable in the sense of slowing down the crime rate, you will see the people come from all over including gays but we dont have to make any special effort to attract them.

So from a business perspective our tourism dept.have alot of work cut out for them and should be working to better their product and openly up one segment for a selective group aint going to do it neither will it help us in the sense their are more group l;obbyist out there that feel they have the same right for special needs and were do we stop the madness, lets host a covention for those that are serial killers that think they do the world a favor by ellimenating innocent people,or invite those that like to still live bak in the 60;s of free love and have a free for all on our public beacjes and displayed in our few hotels, not to mention who would really want to knowingly sleep in the bed of a so called guest to our shores that was in the same bed before us,that is why it is so important for even us to pray over the hotel room that we occupy when we travel, sounds like a joke to some but that is ok,I am just a messenger, you reap what you sow and I should know I have had my share of reaping but I survived to tell the story so hopefuly others wont go the same road, does that sound familar

  18. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

…also mentioned in the report is the difficulties experienced by people with disabilities , physical disabilities , not the mental handicaps .

  19. Really ? says:

Pink sand is for everyone but I am not sure about the aggressive ,angry and violent vibe on the island at the moment my guess is people are very angry and don’t know where to direct it , they all see the island failing and know the current government can’t cut it but can’t see a way out . What will be the tipping point be ? But make no mistake it will come!

  20. Victor says:

If our Gay MPs and Senators came out of the closet and formed a bipartisan caucus, this matter of Gays feeling obliged to keep a low profile in Bermuda could be blown out of the water in about thirty seconds. Yet again, another minority group obfuscating and afraid to speak out for fear of offending; a symptom of a very repressed society.

With regard to the handicapped, it is a shame that so much of what is on offer is difficult for them to access. I really doubt that this is about deliberately excluding them, but is rather more about who pays to make the changes needed to accommodate the disabled. I’ll point out that it starts right at the airport with cheap stairs rather than jetways which cost millions.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Regarding the physically handicapped, people don’t respect what little is done to accomodate them. Lindo’s has clearly marked handicapped parking spaces. Take a look at who & how often they abuse those spots because they are too lazy to park elsewhere & walk to the ATM.

  21. Bermudian says:

Wow, I can’t believe in this era there are still people who are afraid, disgusted or confused about gay people. It’s 2012 for flipping sake…do you live under a rock or in a bubble? Who cares what their sexual preference is. Every single human being has rights regardless of race, nationality, religious views or sexual preference. If you’re breathing you have rights, simple as that! Close minded people are so IGNORANT!

  22. LaVerne Furbert says:

Am I understanding that Customs Officers, Immigration Officers, hotel employees, bus drivers, taxi drivers, shop keepers, etc. etc. can look at tourists and determine if they are gay, lesbian, transgender or queer and therefore treat them in a repressive manner?

@ Bermudian: You said it! Yes!
Rights, respect, equality, mutual understanding between people – it’s all needed now & needed because we’re all human beings living together in this world. It’s sad that the tourism industry’s dollars are what’s awakening people to this plain fact & not their own minds & hearts – or even their own experiences – we’ve all been discriminated against for one reason or another – I know I have – & we all know those “reasons” are really misunderstandings & fears & people just not wanting to reach out to someone who’s not like them or like something they’ve known all their lives.
If Hurricane Leslie had hit hard, there’da been everyone helping & understanding everyone on the island, with judgments & prejudices set down – where they belong – off everyone’s backs. Do we need a hurricane every day to slam us into having a basic level of kindness, to tear us up just so we can see & accept people as people? I hope not b/c I for one like having my electricity on & my buses running & my trees in the ground & not on the ground where I got to pick them up!
Much love to everyone who already gets this & is helping to open hearts. & also much love to those who don’t yet get it, but I hope will.
