15-Yr-Old Sailor Making ‘Splash’ In Germany
15 year old Bermudian youth sailor Hannah Horsfield has been making a “splash” on the sailing scene in Germany over the last couple of months as part of the Mühlenberger Segel Club (MSC) team in Hamburg.
Since moving to to Germany to attend Hamburg International School at the end of the summer she has participated in four i420 Dinghy regattas in the crew position, three in Hamburg and one in the Baltic. Horsfield had the pleasure of meeting four former Opti sailors who all had been to Bda during either the RenRe Jr. Gold Cup or the Bermuda Nationals.
Earlier in September, skipper Janne Schleifer and Horsfield attended the 2012 FSN Cup. The regatta had 90 teams entered. Hannah and crew placed 58th out of the 90 teams entered . Conditions were very hard with rough seas and strong winds. Their best race was a 5th position. Maximillian Hibler (& Madlen Geissler), who participated in the RenRe Jr. Gold Cup a few years ago, won the regatta.
This past weekend Schleifer and Horsfield placed 2nd in the Herbstpokal-Hanseaten Humpen. Eleven 420′s and several other dinghies from three classes participated. The regatta was a 2 day event sailed on the large lake (Alster) in the center of Hamburg and the wind was very shifty resulting in a tactically challenging race.
Wind ranged from 12 to 18 knots. Janne & Hannah sailed well in cold but sunny conditions, winning the second place with seven points, three points behind the winning boat sailed by Tim Stilkenbaeumer and Lukas Linthout.
Proud to be Bermudian!!! Sail on Hannah!!!
