OBA To Rollout St. George’s Candidate Tomorrow

October 10, 2012

The One Bermuda Alliance is set to announce their candidate for Constituency #1 St. George’s North tomorrow. The seat is presently held by Dame Jennifer Smith, who has confirmed she will be seeking re-election.

Dame Jennifer won the seat by a very close margin in the 2007 General Election, getting 25 votes more than her challenger the UBP’s Kenneth Bascome [474-449]. This was the second meeting between the two, with Dame Jennifer defeating Mr Bascome by 8 votes in the 2003 General Election. Although not confirmed, speculation has swirling that Mr Bascome — who serves as Mayor of St George’s — may be set to challenge Dame Jennifer again.

The other St George’s seat — Constituency #2: St. George’s West — will see a three-way battle between Nandi Davis [OBA], John Gibbons [PLP], and Kim Swan [UBP], while Gaylynne Cannonier will challenge the PLP’s Lovitta Foggo in St David’s.

The OBA has rolled out 30 candidates thus far. In addition to Constituency #1 St. George’s North, they are also due to confirm candidates for C#34 Sandys South Central, C#32 Southampton West, C#29 Southampton East, C#20 Pembroke South West, and C#14 Devonshire North West.

  1. Skipper says:

Kiprock, we voted for you for mayor, but WILL not support you going to the House of Assembly. You were a Senator and listening to you was painful. Please don’t force the issue. Don’t let them promise you house, car etc.

  2. welldone says:

If the OBA announces Kenny Bascome then they have handed Constituencies 1 to 4 to the PLP. His toll bridge idea will adversely affect those constituencies the most. The diehard UBP supporter will still support the OBA but anyone in the middle will vote PLP as this toll bridge idea is just ludicrous.

  3. The Dame says:

The Dame all the way! No comparison! OBA colleagues are embrassed to have him stand – Hello – we’ll have the right woman for the the right jobs. Mayor and MP.

  4. Truth says:

I bet you $100 dollars they roll another black Bermudian against the Dame.

  5. Not Kenny says:

Agreed. Mr. Bascome is a great Taxi Ambassador but not MP. Did he graduate school? We need people who can represent. Not the type like Rev. Jackson who speaks n rhymes with no substance.

    • Finally says:

People like you, who make comment like that, make me sick!!
I didn’t graduate college either, but I’ve done ok for myself and my family through hard work. Not sitting on my a$$, asking for a hand out like so many of my fellow Bermudians do now days.
Why would anyone vote for Dame Smith.
She has done little to nothing for St.Georges.
This is a World Heritage Site and I can’t remember the last time I saw her down here.
We want someone who is WORKING for St.George!
Mr.Bascome is one of the hardest working Mayors we have had in a long time.

He has next to no budget to work with and the government of the day has NO funds(money) to give to help one of Bermudas most perilous parishes in these hard times.

So shut your mouth and go get a job. Oh……… Sorry there are none.

      • IQ says:

Perhaps she is too busy dealing with the education situation that we all want fixed asap!

      • PLOP says:

PLP pumped everything through Dockyard and WEDCO. PLP can then access the funds for themselves…no ships for Hamilton, no ships or hotel for St Georges as they didn’t control the COH or ST Georges. Bermuda you have been conned. St Georges folks, . A vote for the PLP would be shooting youself in the foot. Wake up, it’s time to exist and grow St Georges, not CLOSE your home forever.

  6. eyeinthesky says:

SMH! then why would you vote for the man for “Major”! Don’t you people realize they are both important positions. Another thing ” is everyone happy with the education system now!

    JUST asking.

  7. Itsaboutallofus says:

They cant be gonna run Toll Bridge Kenny!

  8. young1 says:

OBA i hope you don’t plan to roll out Mr. Kenny Bascome what a joke!!!

  9. Itsaboutallofus says:

Um sayin this is the guy on the Gary Moreno show the other day playing all the sides against each other trying to act like everyone wants him. Then going on to say how he would be a good Minister of Public Safety etc. I think he has put the cart before the horse! I can’t see him beating Dame Jennifer. She has a solid reputation and we know that she doesnt play politics for personal gain.

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

Where do the political partys keep these candidates before they are “rolled out”? Are they on some sort of wheeled pedestal?

Everytime I see the term used I get visions of a new model car getting rolled out of the factory for the first time or a new aircraft being rolled out of a hanger.

Whatever happened to “announcing” a candidate or “introducing” a candidate? Are they “rolled out” anywhere else in the world?

    Just wondering.

  11. Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

    The OBA will:

Help the Town stand on its own two feet, directing tax revenues to the Corporation and its partners to balance their budgets, provide for much-needed improvements to the Town’s infrastructure and support its continuing development as a World Heritage Site.

Raise St. George’s profile worldwide. It begins with understanding the Old Town as a unique community that has huge market potential, particularly in the context of Bermuda itself. A Tourism Authority that puts professionals not politicians in charge of tourism will realize that potential. We will make St. George’s a must-see destination.

Secure a dedicated cruise ship for the Old Town, berthing alongside Ordnance Island or Penno’s Wharf, to restore commercial life to the economy.

Get the new hotel project underway. Figure it out, sort it out and make the promise happen. The people of St. George’s deserve more respect on this one. They have been strung along for years with empty promises and theatrics. We will make sure people are kept informed.

Open the St. George’s Police station 24/7. Ask any resident and they will say they want it open. That should be enough for any caring Government to hear. The station nevertheless remains closed at night, and the town becomes less safe because of it.

My people of St. George’s deserve better than what they have received from the PLP… Time for Change.

  12. Vote PLP says:

Clinton, they overlooked you because of your lack of education and eloqution and they should of done the same with Kenneth. You both are good foot soldiers but generals you both can not handle. Everyone has a place in life. About time you all realize the real truth of your destinations. I agreed with the committee for overlooking you and sorry to see that again they place another runner up. The Dame has this.

  13. Vote PLP says:

Hey Clinton, I just heard they are thinking of placing you forward and you wanted more? What’s that about?
