Reported Stabbing At Westgate Prison

October 24, 2012

The Westgate Correctional Facility was under a lockdown condition this morning [Oct 24] after an inmate was stabbed by another inmate with a knife, according to a report from ZBM News.

A Department of Corrections spokesperson told Bernews, “The Department of Corrections confirmed that there was an incident involving an inmate earlier today.

“However the situation was quickly brought under control by on duty Correctional Officers. At this stage the matter is under active investigation and there will be no further comment at this time.”

  1. Unbelievable says:

Wonder how he got the knife? Are prisoners allowed such utensils for eating. Aren’t utensils potential weapons? SMH

  2. As Bermuda sinks! says:

Whoaa, what’s going on up there…….drugs, weapons, people on remand being put in with murderers…….. something needs to be done.

    • Terry says:

Wayne Perinchief has it under control.

      • swinging fromchandoliers!!! says:

@Terry—sweety,its Col.Lambe that has that place run like a fortress! not!!!! Col.Lambe like so many other Bermudians, have been put in positions where they themselves have little or no experience..Just because has a degree and has already worked in government is no reason to believe they are knowledgeable in all positions, this has been the cause of our demise..Unqualified managers all around!!!!!It always starts from the top because we know frontline persons are not allowed to make changes…and are very seldom listened to..So lets get rid of all top heavy positions filled by overqualified persons( too good to do anything)..the officers are obviously not being managed to their effective degree..Ministers do not run departments.

        • Terry says:

          I know that.

        • Mayan says:

Col. Lambe is too soft to run a prison. The man believes in hugging prisoners to ‘make it all better’ since he thinks most are just crying out for love. Yeah, maybe they are but it is too late to fix most of those psychopaths. They need to bring in someone like the warden in Arizona (I believe) who makes his prison so bad that the criminals never, ever want to come back again.

My solution for Westgate is to feed the prisoners baloney sandwiches (and maybe some veggies thrown in for extra nutrition) for every single meal, every single day-instead of those delicious meals they get served there. First of all, it will save us (the taxpayers) a ton of money. Secondly, those prisoners will get so sick of baloney sandwiches that upon release every time they think about committing a crime, they’ll turn green at the thought of going back to baloney sandwiches. They’ll feel so sick at the thought that they’ll forget all about the crime they were about to commit.

I’m not kidding about this. It isn’t against anyone’s human rights to do this. If they don’t want to eat it, tough…they’ll just have to sit there until they get hungry enough to eat it-no substitutes. It’s baloney sandwiches or nothing. I’ll bet that will make these punks think twice about going to Westgate.

          • Get Ready says:

            Agree!

          • Be for real . . . says:

Mayan you really believe that eating boloney sandwiches every day will stop the recidivism at Westgate?! Quite the opposite. PLEASE!!!!!!

        • More with less says:

He really is a big fat joke and needs to be removed asap. Every since he lied to the public about the escapee nor being a threat to the public he lost ALL credibility. He is a laughing stock.

        • Tolerate says:

Been reading a lot on this and even if Col. Lamb is not the person strict or hard enough for the job, I think most are missing the points that the very people who work in that environment have been high lighting for some time.
Replacing Lamb with the warden from Arizona or the guy from ADX Colorado or whoever else T.V. has portrayed as a savior; still does not change the challenges the Officers have.
I believe (and would have to go back and check)that than Prison Officer Representative Clarke, marched on Government with a list of requirements that the officers (prisons) needed to have addressed. My question is how many of these issues to date have been addressed?
@swinging fromchandoliers!!! You state “Ministers do not run departments”. This is quite hilarious if you truly believe this. O.K. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt in the casesof this Department; but they “SURE AS HELL HAVE TO ADDRESS URGENT ISSUES RELATED TO THEM”.
I agree our whole judicial system needs to be reviewed, but the individuals working in these areas have to work under the conditions afforded them until changes are made.
Is Westgate’s practice of housing inmates in the order they do being done correctly? I sure don’t know because this is not my area of profession and I have no educational back ground to challenge the existing processes. I do however know that if questions have been raised in this important Department, they should be addressed and answered in a timely manner.
Maybe we can get answers to that question from some Prison Officers as their last representative no longer exists.
Please feel free to use an alias, as most (including myself) on here do.

          • Tolerate says:

As a follow-up, pity we can’t just get rid of the person overseeing Government Departments that have screwed up.
Bermuda would either be in a better position, or we would have no one in charge.

      • smh says:

ACTUALLY, the prisons fall under the Ministry of Justice, headed by Kim Wilson

        • swinging fromchandoliers!!! says:

@smh–your point? Falling under a Ministry is not the same as running a department,..regardless of who is the Minister with that portfolio, the minister does not run the prison!

    • Webster says:

Kim Wilson. please fire Lambe he has no clue as to what is going on ……….

  3. tricks are for kids says:

    Not the least bit surprised……

  4. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

Clearly, a MAJOR overhaul is needed at Westgate. Perhaps it should be extended to our whole justice system. Something is very rotten.

  5. It's Jail says:

Whats going on is what normally goes on when you take the islands finest and put them into a melting pot. Nothing needs to be done, let them figure it out, if they were productive people like the majority of the island they wouldnt be there. In my opinion they shouldn’y have much say in anything because the minute they became a drain on society, that is the moment they lost their freedom.

    • Family Man says:

I’m sure we’ll hear that they’re all really just a bunch of misunderstood boys who made a little mistake and need a big hug to feel better about themselves.

And the plp want to let them vote on who governs our island.

      Yeah right.

      • Webster says:

Walton Brown, would like to see prioners have
the right to vote !!!!!!!!how sick is this man ? these no good criminals have taken the lives of others..and Walton would like them to have a right to vote !!!!!! how desperate are the P.L.P. To gain votes ?

  6. ABM says:

This is what happens when you have a reactive system instead of a proactive one. Yesterday was it, *edited* beat the living daylights out of someone who wasn’t supposed to be in Max, so what do they do?? They decide to move all the prisoners around to their respective places, forgetting that they moved these guys in the first place to seperate the 42 and Parkside gangs. Now it blows up in their faces!!! Wonder what the next step will be?? Love the bit about how “the situation was quickly brought under control by on duty Correctional Officers”!! FUNNY!! Threw that in there to try and show that they are doing their jobs! LAughable!!!

  7. tricks are for kids says:

Stabbings happen in prisons WORLDWIDE….just because it’s deemed that Bermuda is another world doesn’t make us exempt!

    • Dee says:

Agree…first people say it is a hotel and now they want it to be a hotel…it’s jail folks!!

    • Sicario says:

Guns are used in prisons WORLDWIDE,just because Bermuda is deemed another world does make us exempt. LOL, Cheap Trick

  8. chris says:

The above comments are unreasonable. This happens at even the best prisons.

    • Get Ready says:

      But true

    • Mad Dawg says:

What about when an escapee is labellled by the person running the prison as ” harmless”‘ and then we find out he was actually in for violent rape and robbery? Does that happen routinely at other prisons too? Or is it just in Bermuda that that kind of incompetence is acceptable?

  9. Chart says:

    PLP: Stabbing Strong for Bermudians.

  10. Terry says:

    Catch yahself ABM.
It boils down to what do we do.
    Um gutt femlee yahy know…………Jingus.

    • ABM says:

Understood, but this is the result we get when we are more concerned with being nice and treating these guys with soft hands. My opinion, they all act hard so we need to act harder in order to break them! Instead of soft hands, we need to use hard hands to show them whose boss and let them know they are not there for a break but there as punishment! And when they get out of line, solitary doesn’t do the job, what is needed up their is what America’s prison system calls the hole! Drop em in there for a month with no light and minimal food by themselves, then see how they react to getting out of line.

  11. JONO says:

Get Ewart to get U.S. Immigration approval –(in appreciation of his taking the GITMO 4)… Bda can send some of our hard core prisoners to privately operated prisions in South U.S. for less than $40.00 per year.

    • Such a shame says:

There is also Iran those places, Uncle Sam can use them as soldiers, they really wanna fight send them off to war.

    • UncleSam says:

We have enough criminals of our own. Dispose of the trash at sea…

  12. I wonder,, says:

I know I may sound ridiculously naive and out of touch with reality.. so I apologize in advance,, but I dont know how people could have so much hatred and animosity towards someone else because they are from a neighborhood that is less than a mile away from yours??? So because your parents brought or rent a house on St. Monica’s Road and my parents brought or rent a house in Middletown we must therefore hate each other to the point of death.. Someone please explain this to me.. and for the record,, I am a relatively young black man who just can’t understand it..

    • Grubster says:

I don’t think you are the only one. Complete stupidity

    • UK says:

this is not a good time 2b born in Bermuda!! thats all i can say young man!!

      • UK says:

        Born or raised!

        • Egar says:

Then go somewhere else because we dont need your negativity here.

          • Come Correct says:

Comments just like this put us in the position we’re in now, and they’re doing just that, leaving. At least some people can accept reality for what it is instead of sugar coating everything. No wonder so many Bermudians suffer from diabetes…and on todays menu of political bull sh!t, we have truth, coated in sugar, lightly smoked and topped with broken mirrors…and more sugar…

          • Anbu says:

Just shot yourself in the foot mate! Lol

    • Bermuda Girl says:

You don’t understand it because you are intelligent and thoughtful and were probably raised by good people. These wannabees are fighting over land they don’t own and women they don’t really have or want, and drugs that will ruin lives, and they think life is a movie of some kind, and they will always be 22 years old. They live from one day to the next with no thought of the future, like a stray cat.
So the answer is, there is no point. The hate is really towards themselves, and they direct it outwards towards others in very stupid ways that can only end up in death or at Westgate.
So you continue on, and shake your head as we do, and feel sorry for these sad little fools, and anger when they break society’s rules, and remember that they have made their choices in life.

  13. Mad Dawg says:

If they find the guy he’ll get 3 months added to his sentence. That’ll show him.

  14. Have Mercy says:

    @ Terry
I didnt know that Mr. Perinchief worked at WestGate on a day to day basis.
I guess its sort of the same when one of your former boys pulled a shotgun on his daughter.
Remind me who was the UBP Minister back than..

You are soo small and narrow minded…

    • Terry says:

      I remember the incident well.
      Your point?
      You talking Rudy?
The Minister has nothing to do with it.
      Ever been to court?

    • smh says:

Perinchief isnt even in charge of that Ministry,
Kim Wilson is the Minister of Justice.
      So he’s wrong anyway.

    • i agree cause i remember that so clearly

  15. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

O.K…………That’s it , Stabbing !! In prison Huh !! Rice Krispies and milk for breakfast , one apple and a peanut butter and butter sandwich for lunch . For supper ,white rice , spinach and water for supper, Everyday till Christmas for every prisoner . I’m sorry the innocent must suffer for the guilty .

    • Come Correct says:

Then every other prisoner beats the sh!t out of him *tada* self-correcting system.

  16. Truth is killin' me... says:

They can all stab and kill each other for all it’s worth. Animals…all of them! No respect for me or the public so why should I care about them. Spitting in journalists face, giving the finger to the cameras. Put me in charge and they wouldn’t see the light of day. I would make a Turkish prison look like a kindergarten school!

    • West Gate Vacation Resort says:

      @Truth is killing me…..Ditto

      • David says:

I’m with truth, but go further. Build a 20 X 20 room, put outdoor carpet in it and a big drain in the middle.
Let the gangs in, throw them knives and macheties and when all is done, take out the carpet wash down the place. Put new carpet in and wait for the next lot of gang members to arrive. Save tax payers and maybe cure the next generation of wood be gang members.

        • Where do I "BUY BDA" says:

@David….. I totally, totally agree with you. Put them all together and let them duke it out. A confined area, and give them plastic knives and forks. They will soon get tired of doing the same sh!t….. different day.

    • Bermuda Girl says:

      Don’t insult animals!!!!

  17. Webster says:

I think col Lamb, needs to be replced and the sooner the better.

  18. Wild Wild West says:

The problem is that there are too many of them in that prison. I feel for the officers who work up there, never before have they had to deal with this calibre of prisoners, with all the violence going on in this country it is just having a big impact on our prison system. They are taken out of society and thrown in Westgate just for the violence to carry on up there. maybe we need to build another prison to alleviate some of the pressure up there. I think that the powers that be need to re-think that whole system and come up with a better plan to tackle this gang violence that we are now seeing in prison. Some of them are being let out for several hours during the day, this needs to stop, not a good idea at all.I can see many of them being released even earlier than usual just to ease the pressure. They are just not safe anywhere, not even in prison, the BIG question is what do we do now.

    • PLEASE READ!!! says:

@Wild Wild West: Regarding letting the prisoners out early to ease the pressure, that is already happening and I’d like to know who allows this. I assume it’s the parole board but it must be based on recommendations of prison authorities or Gov’t. The sad truth is that, seeing Bermuda is broke, they cannot afford to keep these guys locked up. Add to the fact that Col. Lambe the lamb falls for these guys’claims of redemption, and we have a problem.

There is a guy who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted murder. He was sentenced TWO years ago. This man is now on DAY RELEASE and that is a fact! Does that not mean that he is due to be released soon?

Bernews, you may choose not to post these links but if you make inquiries, you will see that this is true. This man, who has done TWO YEARS of a twelve year sentence, is on day release and the prison cannot deny it as I (along with many others) have seen him working in Dockyard. Also note that he was one of the men featured in a video along with other hard-core criminals who have all claimed to have seen the light-with Col. Lambe clearly buying their bullsip. TWO years of a twelve year sentence? C’mon-this is ridiculous!!!

      http://bernews.com/2010/09/attempt-on-yankee-anthony-swan-found-guilty/

    • Where do I "BUY BDA" says:

Let’s put all of the “Lifers” back in the old Casemates (leave it the way it is now) with no protection from the elements. Just ensure that the doors lock so they can’t get out.

  19. West Gate Vacation Resort says:

Col Lambe is exactly that a Lamb. Let’s implement hard labor that’s what’s needed up there. Cut their Damn a$$e$.. Make them work they’ll be to tired for all that dumb $hit..

  20. Hazel says:

So how many more inmates gotta get injured before something is done. If we see that Col. Lambe is a problem (or at the least doesn’t do a good job) then handle the business. Get rid of him and solicit “foreign services”, bring in the powers that be that run ADX in Colorado and have them run Westgate like it should be run. All this blah, blah, blah about what could be done…get it done. The only way to change things, is to change the way things are done…..otherwise it’s just insanity doing the same thing over and over and over and over….. I wish a speedy recovery to the inmate that was injured.

  21. Omg but not totally shocked says:

The one that did the stabbing should be injected with medication like they do at mawi. He’s out of control and has violent behavior. To protect the prison and other inmates this must be done. See how many flip their script then

  22. Duh says:

What about ppl in jail for driving ddunk or no license cant say let them kill each other… So sad

    • Truth is killin' me... says:

Nobody goes jail for a first offense of DUI or no license. DUH!!! Enabling the multiple offenders are we!?

      • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

People are jailed for non-payment of fines.

    • Glip says:

People are in jail for no licence? Last one got 100 dollar fine.

  23. Crystal says:

Col. Lamb is a good leader and does a good job.On top of that he has a good heart. He can’t control every incident. It is not easy to manage from the top but is sure is easy to criticise from the bottom.

    • swinging fromchandoliers!!! says:

@Crystal—if it is not easy to manage from the top yet Col.Lambe is doing such a great job and is such a great guy!,there should be no such incidents occuring, there are way too many issues at Westgate under his management..He is a great guy, no doubt, but he has poor management skills and isobviously ill suited for that position at the prisons..We don’t need a “NICE” guy to run our prison facility. There have been numerous prisoners escaping, prison officers found with illegal substance, prison officer being attacked, inmates fighting, having cellphones, getting priveledges to be out and about without supervision, the list goes on and on,..I am not disputing how nice he is, the job is overwhelming for the Col.Lambe, whose name suggest meekness..

    • Unbelievable says:

You have got to be a very close relative to have this opinion cause everybody including the prisoners know that Lamb is as shady as they come and totally both unfit and unprofessional for the position he holds.
As for the hugging prisoners part I’ll leave that one alone and let ones imagination go where it may…..

  24. CHEEKUMS BI says:

? Are we forgetting that this is prison?? I’m amazed that there hasn’t been MORE violent crimes up there which tells me that they have that under control. But the obvious is sometimes over looked by many , and that is..that this is prison, where you have your drug dealers, murderers, rapist, child molesters, thieves, cons, basically all of societies scum in one place, do you really expect people who couldn’t behave in society to behave in prison???
Once you understand the nature of the beast then you wont have to wonder or ask why is this happening.

  25. Dee (Original) says:

Crystal, Col. Lamb does indeed have a good heart and maybe that’s a big part of the problem. I know him personally and he’s a wonderful man, but way too soft to be running the hard core prison Westgate has become. Whenever he speaks publicly, he is practically in tears over his poor, misunderstood and unloved boys. He needs to open his eyes and see them for the thugs that they are. Some people make a mistake and learn from it, but others just seem beyond help. Many of us had a tough upbringing, but we don’t go about being a menace to society. Col. Lamb needs to stop babying these guys. A lot of their moms did that, which is part of the reason these spoiled brat punks behave as they do. Time for some TOUGH LOVE!!! They are in prison, not nursery school!!!

  26. tricks are for kids says:

Not fully understanding all this animosity towards Col. Lamb. Stabbings happen WORLDWIDE in even the toughest prisons. So should the heads of those prisons be replaced as well? If you are saying that Westgate is a hotel than CLEARY you have never been incarcerated!

  27. A Bermudian says:

I’m not sure if any of the people commenting on this story watch tv, but these typs of things happen everyday in prisons all around the world. Stabbings, drugs, prison officers breaking the law, I mean you name it, it happens. I am not going to sit here and say Mr. Lamb is doing a good or bad job becaus I don’t know. But please, all you people need to watch MSNBC on weekends, and you will see that these sort of things happen at prisons, everywhere. I almost forgot, people get killed in prison pretty often as well.

    • Pastor Syl Hayward says:

I learned that what appears on TV is the unusual, the extraordinary – which is what makes it eligible for television. If it was normal and everyday, it wouldn’t be newsworthy.
The fact that we have had two extremely violent acts occur within such a short space of time is truly worrisome. This is NOT normal and to demean people’s outrage and concerns is to send the message that this type of behaviour is OK because other people do it. That’s how the island got into the mess it is in in the first place…remember when?

  28. Wrong Blame says:

Col Lambe can’t walk on water nor does he have nail marks in his hands so why is everyone acting like he has the power to stop people from committing “sinful acts”. The worlds toughest prisons have stabbings, murders, rapes. I dont care if you put sylvester stalone up there with a bazooka on his shoulder patrolling halls, some fool is still going to try and sneak a cheap shot in on someone. We Bermudians always tend to blame the wrong people. Gunshots go off…….”whaaaaattt wurz de police??” drunk driver hits someone………”cheesh buh why the police let people drive around like this that”….prisoner gets hurt….” whats wrong with that guy Lambe”…..child being disruptive in class …” that teacher needs to be reviewed…like this island totally misses the point on so many levels each and every time…….Blame the criminals for being week minded and giving in to the evil suggestions put in thier heads by the devil. The people making all of these crazy suggestions which are boderline human rights issues want a third world prison, but dont want the island to be considered 3rd world. So where is the consistancy?…..aside from blaming the wrong people….we are pretty consistent at that.

  29. Dee (Original) says:

Being “week” (sic) minded as you call it has nothing to do with it. Some of these guys are pure evil and the devil has nothing to do with it. I am so sick of WEAK, bleeding hearted people talking about these thug’s so called “human rights.” Their human rights is what’s keeping the cops from kicking in doors and rounding up the thugs they know are committing so many of these crimes. I also have to agree with an earlier blogger, I have also seen the young man who was convicted of a violent gun crime on a man who was eventually murdered by somebody else. I was totally shocked to see this man out on work release so soon. I don’t agree that people are not placing the blame on the criminal. I think people are just fed up that the authorities are going way too soft on these guys, hence they have no fear of getting caught or going to prison…
