National Coach Congratulates Top Swimmers
National swimming coach Ben Smith today [Dec 19] highlighted some of BASA’s Top performers between the 2011 and 2012 season.
Mr Smith said, “BASA had another very successful swimming season, both locally and overseas.
“Although we are proud of all of our swimmers and their performances, there are certain performers that stand out.
“In the opinion of the National coaches, the following list of swimmers has been selected as the top performers of the season.
“Please join us in congratulating these swimmers on their outstanding performances”.
The Top 10 Performers are:
- 1. Nic Patterson, Sharks Swim club; Nic broke into the elite swimmers ranks with a Bermuda record for an excellent swim in the 200 butterfly at his final CARIFTA Swimming Championships in the Bahamas.
- 2. Rebecca Heyliger, Sharks Swim club; With two bronze medals in the 50 butterfly and the 100 backstroke at the Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC) in Aruba, Rebecca once again displayed her outstanding sprint capabilities.
- 3. Stephanie Myles, Unattached; Stephanie won three medals at CISC – bronze in the 200 breaststroke, silver in the 400 freestyle and a gold in the 400 individual medley, amply displaying her versatile distance abilities.
- 4. Benedict Parfit, Dolphins Swim Club; In his last CARIFTA meet, Benedict produced a great swim in the 50 freestyle, which earned him the silver medal.
- 5. Ashley Yearwood, Harbour Swim club; Ashley rounded out her final CARIFTA appearance with a bronze medal in the 50 freestyle. At CISC, she won three more medals – 2 bronze in the 50 backstroke and the 200 freestyle and silver in the 50 butterfly, with a superb swim which set an age group record.
- 6. Julian Fletcher, Sharks Swim Club; Julian had an outstanding CISC meet, taking a total of 5 medals – 2 bronze in the 50 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley, a silver in the 200 individual medley and 2 gold in his specialties, the 100 and 200 breaststroke. His swim in the 100 breaststroke saw him set a new Bermuda record.
- 7. Shannon Hassell, Sharks Swim Club; Making a reputation for herself as a noteworthy regional backstroker, Shannon won three medals at CARIFTA – a bronze in the 50, a silver in the 100 and a gold in the 200. She then went on to CISC, where she won four more medals – bronze in the 50 backstroke and 200 freestyle, and silver in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
- 8. Lisa Blackburn, Sharks Swim Club; Lisa had an outstanding season, which reached a peak at CISC, where she earned a total of seven medals – a bronze in the 50 freestyle, silver in the 50 breaststroke and 200 butterfly and 4 gold medals in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200 and 400 individual medley. Additionally, her swims in the 50 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley established new Bermuda records.
- 9. Jesse Washington, Sharks Swim club; Jesse dominated the region this year with a series of remarkable performances at both CARIFTA and CISC. At CARIFTA, he earned a total of seven medals – a bronze in the 400 freestyle, silver in the 50 backstroke and five gold medals in the 50 and 100 butterfly and the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. Every swim at this meet also established new age group records. He then went one better with an eight medal haul at CISC – silver in the 50 and 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle, along with gold in the 50 and 100 butterfly and the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle. To cap it all, he was also the age group winner at both meets.
- 10. Roy-Allan Burch, Sharks Swim club; Roy [pictured above] continues to improve as an elite swimmer. He won two medals at CISC, silver in the 100 freestyle along with gold in his main event, the 50 freestyle. He also set Bermuda records at this meet in the 50 butterfly and the 50 backstroke. Earlier in the year, he achieved his main goal of the season by qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics. Once there, with a fine swim, he set another Bermuda record in the 50 freestyle.
Coach Smith also gave Honorable Mentions for 3 young and upcoming female swimmers for their performances at the Michael Lohberg Invitational Swim Meet in Coral Springs, Florida.
- Madeline Moore, Sharks Swim club; Winning 3 medals – 2 gold in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke and a silver in the 100 freestyle.
- Ashley Irby, Harbour Swim Club; Setting 3 age group records in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and earning 6 medals – 2 silver in the 50 and 100 freestyle and 4 bronze in the 200 freestyle, 50 and 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke
- Emma Harvey, Harbour Swim Club; Setting 6 age group records in the 50 butterfly, 50 and 100 breaststroke, 50 and 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley, as well as earning 8 medals – 2 gold in the 50 backstroke and the 50 butterfly, 5 silver in the 50 and 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley and 1 bronze in the 50 freestyle.
