470 People Sign Up For 130 Hospitality Jobs

January 13, 2013

Last Friday [Jan 11] the 2013 Hospitality Job Fair took place, and more than 470 people sign up for close to 130 available jobs in the hospitality industry.

The event, which was held at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, was a partnership between the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Bermuda Hotel Association [BHA] and the Restaurant Division of the Chamber of Commerce.

The Hospitality Job Fair was Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy’s first official engagement since his appointment, and he said that he was encouraged by the number of people who turned out to employment event.

The Minister said, “I was very impressed with this year’s group of applicants. They were well prepared and we genuinely hope that many them will be successful in finding employment as a result of Friday’s job expo.”

Minister Fahy reiterated that in addition to growing the economy, another one of Government’s key priorities is getting Bermudians back to work.

He said, “We have an 8 percent unemployment rate – and we need to ensure that we have programmes in place to address this issue. The Hospitality Job Fair is one initiative that helps in our efforts to employ Bermudians.

“The hospitality industry can be a very rewarding career choice, and there were dozens of jobs available, so we really hope that many of these positions will be taken up by Bermudians.”

Minister Fahy concluded, “This was my first event as Minister, and I am pleased to see the organisation and coordination that has gone into making the job expo a reality.

“So we certainly wish to commend the Department of Labour and Training, and our industry partners, the BHA and the Restaurant Division of the Chamber of Commerce, for hosting the event, because it truly demonstrates their commitment to getting Bermudians back to work.”

I trust he got permission from Chris Furbert before attending……

    Got to “show respect”!!

  2. it's just a game says:

OBA,,,,please dont do the same tricks the PLP did people are trusting in you to be different

    • tricks are for kids says:

Exactly. ……job fairs were held under PLP reign as well and many people are still out of work despite large attendance at each fair…

      • m3ke says:

they had this exact job fair a year ago and it was a bunch of BS. Nobody got jobs. What a joke

        • Shay says:

It was just that “A JOKE”! At the time that I was there, myself and 6 others were dressed like we were going on an interview. The rest of the people, (and it was a lot), looked like they were going to a football game and wearing anything. If I were a vendor I would have thrown their applications and resumes in the trash, because the ad specifically told you how to dress (not like any of them were 10 and didn’t know what they were going for).
To top it off, I drop off my application as instructed by one of the hotels and that afternoon this was her reply,
“Good afternoon, Thank you for your application for a position at The XXXXXXXX. Unfortunately we do not have anything suitable at this time. We will keep your application on file for six months and should something suitable become available, we will be in contact.
          Regards

          IT IS A JOKE!!!

  3. Facts & Figures says:

This is a joke. OBA bring on the 2000 jobs you promised.

    • Friendly Faces says:

Give them a chance, they’ve been in Government for 4 weeks! Remember we had years and years of lies, deceit and incompetence, its gonna take more than 4 weeks to unwind the PLP mess.

  4. haha says:

Bring on the 2000 jobs OBA…

  5. Bobmarlin says:

Good job OBA.The PLP put Bermudians out of work and now you are trying to get us back to work.Minister Fahy do not let Mr.Furbert deter you from your goals!

    • tricks are for kids says:

Great incentive….BUT….Will you actually be calling people this time?…….hundreds applied to the last couple of “job fairs”…….how long do you keep applications on file?????

  6. RHONDA says:

Glad to hear the unemployment rate has dropped 8%, in less than 3 week of an OBA Administration.

  7. Bermudican says:

Seasonal employment rates can indeed make rapid increases and decreases in the employment numbers .
Resources have been seriously dwindled down from the current general state of affairs however it does shine a ray of hope that the atmosphere has begun to change for the better.
Optimism and adaptability help with the mind set of people in their observation points of perspective.
I am going with every step in the right direction will create momentum. Each effort by the individuals will add to the orchestration of an entirely new set of opportunities for everyone , I have heard said that people sense there is a more positive environment happening..Keep up the right effort and right thinking Bermuda….
Slow and steady things are turning about.

oba seems to be doing a better job already

    • m3ke says:

They had this exact job fair a year ago and nobody got hired. Stop giving the OBA false credit.

      • Mr. Happy says:

That is total BS. Many locals got hired last year due to the job fair.

      • Zombie Apocalypse says:

If “nobody got hired last year”, I guess you admit the PLP did a crappy job. And if at least 1 person gets hired this year, the OBA will have done better.

        • m3ke says:

Provide the source that claims how many people actually got jobs.

          Thanks

          • Zombie Apocalypse says:

You’re the one asserting that no-one got hired after the PLP fair last year, not me. You should be providing the source, not me.

And if what you say is true, then the PLP did a crappy job last year, and if at least one person gets hired this year the OBA will have done better.

  9. I applaud the efforts being made to continually see who is unemployed and needs employment but if we take a closer look at the numbers we would notice that the numbers that turned out is considerably smaller then previous.

Which to me is more alarming because the higher numbers would indicate that there is not many jobs that have become available since the last job fair, which can result in a number of things.

(1)Many are still discouraged that nothing happen from the last job fair.

(2)The jobs being offered don’t pay the amount of money that is realistically needed to survive in Bermuda.

(3)how many previous applicants have left Bermuda to live in the U.K.or other jurisdictions.

(4)how many previous applicants had to go onto social assistance and now don’t see the need to full look for employment, as their basic needs are now being paid for from the tax payers purse and that is in no way to disrespect their present position or condition.

(5)how many are applying for jobs in the hospitality industry and other job divisions in Bermuda and are being denied a job, but constantly have to witness non Bermudians with no ties to Bermuda doing jobs that we as Bermudians are more then capable of doing.IE like van drivers for bakeries, counter personnel at many restaurants.warehouses, construction just to name a few.

    • Tommy Chong says:

“The jobs being offered don’t pay the amount of money that is realistically needed to survive in Bermuda.”

According to the owner of one of the biggest restaurant groups in Bermuda he would have to sell $100 burgers to pay his staff proper wages. Poor him! Life must be so hard for him in the restaurant business that he can’t afford to purchase another business during the economic down turn.

OOOHHHP! This onion must of got to froggy & jumped to conclusions because I do see now he has just bought another.

Well I guess having a degree for theatre & english must go a long way in knowing how to run a hospitality industry. To be or not to be a Bermudian that is the question that gets you employed or not employed in hospitality in Bermuda.

  10. Xman says:

This could be the start of a new beginning for employment for Bermuda.
Were at the point were Bermudians would do anything for work.

  11. Prayerful says:

The most logical comment is from Duane Santucci. I do not always agree with him but I do this time.

  12. Tommy Chong says:

There can be Job Fairs till the Cahows come home & umpteen amount of attendants but that doesn’t guarantee employers will give you a job. Let’s not jump to congratulate OBA until they have done something to REALLY guarantee the employment of Bermudians. PLP were daft enough to let employers get away with ridiculous excuses of Bermudians not being educated enough to write a food order down & bring plates to tables. Now let’s see if OBA can remedy this simple mindedness thats left thousands of locals without a job. Just because someone gets a piece of paper between Claro M. Recto and Rizal Avenue doesn’t mean they are anymore qualified than a Bermudian.

  13. Triangle Drifter says:

Of course on the other side of the job coin, what is the quality of the applicant? Bad attitudes towards the customer in the service industry need not apply. Not showing up for work because it is Cup Match need not apply

  14. it's just a game says:

OBA,,,OBA,,,OBA are showing more effort in one month than PLP have showed in there whole lenght of stay,,what is sad about it is that PLP is made up of people like me,,,but they are the ones more guilty of oppressing their own people,,and most of them aquired the stiff neck,,the same people you grew up with and went to school with looked down on you like they had arrived,,strangly i have not seen
the likes of most of them since the election,,was there a Mass Exile,,
