‘Bermuda Century Ride’ To Benefit Charity
The Bermuda Century Ride, a new event for the island, is a cycling fundraiser in support of the Centre Against Abuse [CAA], taking place on Sunday, 27 January 2013.
If you are really fit, try the full century or 100 mile ride. Not so fit? Select from one of four shorter distances: 15, 25, 50 or 75 miles. Not fit at all? Volunteers are needed or you can sponsor the ride of a participating cyclist.
Entries are currently being accepted through www.racedayworld.com. Entry forms and pledge sheets are also available at Sportseller in the Washington Mall. Entry fees for the Bermuda Century Ride will vary by ride distance; so $15 for the 15 mile ride and $100 for the 100 mile ride.
“We are encouraging the community to support the riders as they take on this new challenge,” said Laurie Shiell, CAA’s Executive Director. “The Centre Against Abuse has a budget of $500,000 a year, which is needed to help end domestic abuse on the island. CAA runs the only safe house in Bermuda for women and children escaping violence, and every pledge of support – large or small – for the cyclists will help us give assistance to those in desperate need.”
Race director, Aideen Ratteray Pryse, says “CAA hopes that each cycle rider is able to reach a pledge goal of $100, with their entry fee contributing to the goal total. So, for example, those choosing to ride the full 100 miles will reach the goal with their entry fee.
“We will be delighted, of course, with all the funds raised by the cyclists and their friends and family as the work of the Centre Against Abuse is incredibly important in bringing stability to our community. Get together with a group of friends and do the Ride!”
The Centre Against Abuse is a registered charity in Bermuda, and works to provide safe shelter, support and tools for those involved in relationship abuse and, also, creating abuse free advocates for an abuse free community through education and prevention. A key element in The Centre’s services is the island’s only safe house, which it runs for women and their children.
