Record Holder Withdraws From 10K Road Race
31 years after setting the Bermuda Race Weekend’s 10K record, Geoff Smith returned to the island intending to race again, however withdrew from this morning’s [Jan 19] race citing hip problems.
At the beginning of the HSBC 10K they announced that that Mr Smith withdrew from today’s race after experiencing a problem with his hip after running in last night’s Front Street Mile races.
The veteran runner was present at the race start anyway, and wished all the other runners well, joking that he would be happy to share the record.
Mr Smith competed in two Olympic Games, and won the Boston Marathon in both 1984 and 1985. The 59-year-old Englishman set the Bermuda 10k record of 28.14 back in 1982.
