Upcoming: Raleigh Tag/Tattoo Day Fundraiser

January 10, 2013

Raleigh Bermuda is having a tag day this week Friday [Jan 11], to raise funds for their 2013 programme. Raleigh Bermuda is a registered charity and was founded in 2004.

The aim of the organisation is to provide Bermudians between the ages of 17-25, with the opportunity to be challenged and inspired to strive towards their goals through adventure and personal development. Each year, they work with 20-30 young people that want to change their lives.

They provide a free year-long personal development programme which includes residential group training camps, individualised coaching, and an incredible 10 week expedition in Malaysia, India, Central America, or Africa. During the expedition, participants engage in meaningful environmental and community projects, as well as an adventure challenge.

Executive Director Kristin White explains, “Our programme is provided free of charge to any young person that wants to make positive changes in their lives. And in 2011, we started offering 2 programmes a year, which means our costs have definitely increased.

“Hopefully the community will support the Tag Day, so that we can meet our rising costs, and expand our programme a bit more. In addition to raising funds, we also want to raise awareness of our organization, so we have a really big day planned!”

Volunteers will be tagging at various locations around The City of Hamilton from 8.30am – 5.30pm, and Raleigh will also have one Hub Location from 11 am – 3pm, where passersby can see a photo gallery, get a temporary tattoo, and have their photo taken at the interactive photo booth.

All donors will be eligible for small raffle prizes, so will be required to drop a business card or info slip into the bucket along with their donation.

“We wanted to do something a little different so it’s a tag day, but we also have some small prizes including travel vouchers, desk calendars and t-shirts,” Ms. White continued.

“And, the Hub will be a great spot to ask questions about the programme as the volunteers there will all be alumni or Board members. We are also recruiting for our summer programme, so if anyone is interested in signing up or finding out more, they should drop by the Hub.”

Since 2004, over 100 young people have taken part in Raleigh Bermuda’s programmes. And the personalised support they provide plus the opportunity to travel and help in developing countries has continued to produce young Bermudians with a global awareness and a renewed sense of purpose. 82% of their participants are working or in school and 95% say the programme made a positive difference in their lives.

Ms. White concludes, “With all that’s happening in Bermuda right now, rising youth crime and unemployment, the need for Raleigh is paramount. Whether a participant wants to develop confidence or overcome drug abuse, our programme supports and empowers them to take control of their life, overcome their circumstances, and reach their full potential.”
