BASA Names 2013 Carifta Swimming Team

The XXVII CARIFTA Swimming Championships will be held from March 30th to April 3rd at the National Stadium pool in Kingston Jamaica.

A BASA spokesperson said, “The last opportunity to qualify was on March 9th and at the conclusion of the meet we had 18 swimmers qualified for the team. This doubles the size of the team from last year’s successful trip to Bahamas. We have added a strong group of younger swimmers to the team and will be looking to gain experience from so many newbie’s.

“The team will be travelling to Jamaica on Wednesday March 27th and returning on Thursday April 4th. The competition is taking place from Saturday March 30th to Tuesday April 2nd with the Open water swim on the 3rd.

“This will be the second time that Philip “Cheesy” Hagen competes at Carifta. Last season he made huge improvements to make the times to compete at Carifta. He then lowered all his times at Carifta to qualify for CISC.

“He hopes that his first try in the 15-17 age group will see him lower all his times again and qualify him for this summer’s CCCAN in Costa Rica.

“Shannon won a gold, silver and bronze medal at last year’s Carifta helping us to have one of our most successful meets ever. She has shown great promise in the backstroke events but will also be showing her worth in freestyle this season.

“Jesse Washington will be competing in his third Carifta Swimming Championships. Last year Jesse was able to capture the 11&12 age group Champion trophy with his spectacular 5 gold and 1 silver medal haul.

“This year he moves up to the 13 and 14 age group and is hoping to continue his success. He has the potential to have another great meet.

“This will be the first Carifta for Alyssa has been a faithful club member for several years. Her dedication to swimming has culminated in her qualifying for the CARIFTA team.”

Accompanying the team will be National Coaches Ben Smith and Richard Goodwin, team manager Diane Moore, athletic trainer and massage therapist Dominique Nannette along with team photographer and chaperone Doug Patterson.

Coach Ben Smith is “hopeful that we can surpass our strong result from last year that saw a record medal haul. We have added some very strong young talent to the team this year and we hope to get some great results from these inexperienced Carifta competitors.”

Coach Richard Goodwin. “I am very much looking forward to this year’s CARIFTA. I have every expectation of some exciting competition and some great performances by our team.”

BASA President Tim Petty is “very pleased with the growth in the team size and in the ability to perform even with the challenges that we have had this season with the pool closure. Good luck to all these great youngsters, do Bermuda proud.”
