Sail Training Bursaries For 2 Young Bermudians

March 12, 2013

The deadline is fast approaching for applications for a special bursary to sail on the high seas as a trainee on a Tall Ship.

The Sail Training Association Bermuda, the Island’s National Sail Training Organisation has arranged with Sail Training International (STI) for two bursaries for suitable candidates from Bermuda. The bursaries are actually being sponsored by The Sultanate of Oman in conjunction with STI.

This means that two young people from Bermuda who are aged 15 – 25 have an opportunity to sail in the 2013 Tall Ships Races in the Baltics, in the Mediterranean or in the Sydney to Auckland Regatta.

The bursaries will help to cover the cost of each voyage. Other travel-related expenses will be covered by The Sail Training Association Bermuda on a needs basis.

No prior sailing experience is required. However, the two young people who are selected will be exposed to sail-handling, navigation, passage-making, safety-at-sea and ship management skills that are designed to inspire their self-confidence, personal responsibility, acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural background and an appreciation of teamwork and friendship with other young people from around the world.

A complete list of voyage dates and destinations are posted on the STI website.

Interested young people in Bermuda who wish to apply for the opportunity to represent the Island on an international Tall Ships adventure are encouraged to apply this week to info@tallships.bm or to contact Carol Wills, 535-9379 for further information.
