The vessel –then 240 miles east of the island — had departed New Orleans bound for Morocco. The ‘Amber L’ diverted to a rendezvous position 2 miles east of Bermuda, and at 9.30am today [Apr 10] the crew member was successfully taken by stretcher to a pilot boat and transferred to an ambulance in St. George’s.

The Duty Officer said, “At noon yesterday, the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a satellite telephone call from the captain of merchant vessel ‘Amber L’, a 25,955 GRT Bulk Carrier registered in Panama, advising that a 64 year old Greek national on board was suffering from a heart related illness and needed to be taken ashore.

“The vessel then 240 miles East of Bermuda, had departed New Orleans a few days earlier bound for Jorf Lasfar in Morocco. Following medical advice from the Red Cross in Greece, and after it was confirmed that the patient was in a stable condition, the ‘Amber L’ diverted to a rendezvous position 2 miles East of Bermuda.
