Speaker Randy Horton Visits The UK Parliament
On the invitation of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association [CPA] UK Branch, Speaker of the House Randy Horton attended an official visit to Westminster Houses of Parliament in the UK between 22nd-26th April. The Speaker was accompanied by Mrs. Shernette Wolffe, Clerk to the Legislature.
Mr. Horton also had an opportunity to have an initial meeting with the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon. John Bercow MP. They focused their discussion on the responsibility for ensuring that all Members of Parliament have an opportunity to participate in Parliamentary proceedings.
Both Mr. Horton and Mrs. Wolffe were invited to observe the following Committees; the Justice Committee which focused on treatment of Senior Prisoners; the Public Bills Committee, focusing on taxation issues and the Committee on Standards and of Privileges, discussing the code of conduct and interests for Members of Parliament.
Mr. Horton also made it a priority to meet with Sir Alan Haselhurst MP, Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee and Chair of the CPA Executive Committee; Dr. William F Shija, the CPA Secretary General and former Member of the National Assembly of Tanzania and both the Bermuda and British Overseas Territories All Party Parliamentary Groups.
Mr. Horton said, “The visit was useful to ascertain clarity in the role of the Speaker and the important roles that all Parliamentarians should play in our democracy.”
The purpose of the visit was to:
- Brief the new Speaker on relevant aspects of the structure, functions and output of the UK Parliament;
- To achieve the objectives in gaining an in-depth understanding of the several roles and responsibilities of the Speaker of the House of Commons;
- To enhance understanding of the Select and Public Bill Committees systems;
- To discuss developments in the CPA and the wider Commonwealth; and
- To conduct Bermudian Parliamentary diplomacy.
In February 2013 Mr Horton — a member of the Opposition — was selected as the new Speaker of the House.

I have the utmost respect for the founder of this site, Patricia Burchall and I can only imagine the work that she puts into it on a daily basis, only to be disrespected by those of you who blog on here with little constructive input. You, Family Man, Argosy and others may think that you are showing disrepect to me, but really you are showing more disrepect to Ms. Burchall with your constant nasty comments. Shame on you!!

So several people provide factual examples to refute your statement that Bermudian parliamentarians are better behaved than their UK counterparts, but instead of responding with any kind of counter argument (expenses scandal?) you just accuse them of “disrespecting” you.
I’m not going to begin to ask how this rises to disrespecting the founder of this site, that’s a big pile of crazy I’m not stepping in.
You want some constructive input? Put forward a cogent argument supported by facts and you might earn some respect. Earn is the key word there.
