Two Runners, 70 & 72, Break May 24th Records
Bermuda’s Veteran runners were in fine form today [May 24], with the official results showing that both the male and female winners shattered the previously held Bermuda Day Half Marathon Veteran records.
70-year-old Antun Duzevic [pictured] powered his way to claim the Veteran title in a time of 1:43:35, while 72-year-old Margaret Burgess-Howie crossed the line in 2:21:56 to win the female title.
The Veteran class is for 70 and over, the Elders class is for 60-69 year olds, the Seniors class is for 50-59 year olds, while the Masters class is for 40-49 year olds
Mr Duzevic placed 81st overall and set a new record for the Veteran class, while Ms Burgess Howie’s record breaking time saw her finish 453rd overall.
They weren’t the only impressive Veterans in the field, with perennial crowd favourite Ray Swan — now 75-years-old — placing second in the category in a time of 1:55:12 to place 187th.
72-year-old Giorgio Zanol powered in third, while 6-time champion Ed Sherlock — the oldest runner in the field at 81-years-old — showed he still has it crossing the line in 2:40:59.
Beldwin Smith, John Every, Millard Lightbourne, and George Jones rounded out the Veteran runners, with all four gentleman, who are in their 70s, showing impressive form completing the 13 mile race.
