Upcoming: Tokio Millennium Re Sprint Triathlon

May 14, 2013

The 7th annual Tokio Millennium Re Sprint Triathlon will be taking place on Sunday [June 9] at Albuoy’s Point in Hamilton.

The event is geared to draw participants from all athletic levels. Individuals and teams can participate in a sprint triathlon or newcomers can take part in a Try-a-Tri, which consists of a shorter course. There is also a duathlon for kids.

Another component Tokio Millennium hopes to promote is their Senior School Challenge. Ed Jordan, one of the race directors along with Vernée Simmons, hopes their Senior School Triathlon Challenge will draw even more participants this year.

“Tokio has always had a focus on kids with a junior component to the triathlon but we wanted to reach a broader audience so created the Senior School Triathlon Challenge. With a team event it is easier to find swimmers, bikers and runners separately and put them together.”

Tokio is reaching out in yet another way to get more youth involved this year by introducing a Senior School Duathlon Challenge.

Mr. Jordan said the run – bike – run makes the event accessible to more people. “In Bermuda there is a large community of runners and cyclists so we hope this draws more participation from our youth.”

Last year’s overall Triathlon Challenge winner was Saltus Grammar School, who won $500 for their school with the fastest combined time of its top two teams. Somersfield Academy was second earning $250 and the Berkeley Institute placed third winning $150. Berkeley, however, had the fastest team and also received the Tokio Senior School Triathlon Challenge trophy, which they proudly displayed for the past year.

Mr. Jordan added: “By incorporating both a Senior School Duathlon and Triathlon Challenge, we hope to encourage twice as many students to compete this year.” Saltus will be back to defend its title and CedarBridge Academy, BHS, Berkeley, Warwick Academy, Bermuda Institute and Somersfield have confirmed they will be competing as well.

Challenge teams can consist of boys, girls or mixed. The triathlon teams will be competing in a 200m swim, 8km bike and 2km run. Duathlon teams will participate in a run-bike-run consisting of a 2km run, 8km ride and a second 2km run.
Students wishing to compete may sign-up through their PE teacher.
