Bermuda .NET Users Group Salutes Dr. Martin
The Bermuda .NET User Group has extended its condolences to the family and friends of internationally renowned computing pioneer Dr. James Martin, recalling that the long-time local resident spoke at the organisation’s inaugural meeting in 2010.
Dr. Martin’s lifeless body was discovered in the waters off his Agar’s Island home by a kayaker on Monday [June 24]. The British-born scientist, philanthropist and futurist was 79 years old.
The Bermuda Police Service has said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Dr. Martin’s death.
“It’s with great sadness we heard about the passing of Dr. James Martin,” said the Bermuda .NET User Group in a statement. “As a group of technology loving individuals, he was a great inspiration and he also enthusiastically contributed to this beautiful island we live on.
“The Bermuda .NET User Group was fortunate enough to have Dr James Martin speak at our launch event, back in 2010. He was the keynote speaker and spoke to the group about the future of technology.
“This was the perfect start to our group as he is considered to be one of the most influential technologists of our time either inventing or being pivotal in 4th generation development tools, CASE [Computer Aided Software Engineering], pioneering object oriented development, enterprise architecture and design and his extensive work in database architecture.”
The group of Bermuda computing professionals — which meets regularly to share ideas and discuss new technologies — said Dr. Martin left a rich legacy in terms of both the hundred-plus technology-related textbooks he authored as well as the Oxford Martin School at Oxford University with its goal of bringing researchers from across the various disciplines together to work on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity.
“This is a permanent legacy he’s left us all,” said the group.” Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.”
