Focus Counselling Service Celebrates 25 Years

June 20, 2013

25 years ago Focus Counselling Service opened its doors in Hamilton as a substance abuse interventions agency and has been a registered charity since 1993.

Focus was founded by two addiction counselors , Sandra Butterfield and Jerry Griffiths, who recognized a gap in the “Helping Service” system. Focus Counselling Service is presently located on Elliott Street and is still providing harm reduction, counseling, drug treatment and transitional housing services for persons in recovery.

Focus Counselling Service mission is to restore the dignity and respect for those who are in the throes of addition and have lost hope, by providing outreach, treatment and supportive residency for persons who have moved on to the recovery phase [post treatment]. Focus is supported by Internationally Certified Substance Abuse Counselors, volunteers, and Board members. This year Focus Counselling Services fed 2240 breakfasted and 3159 lunches to those who are part of the program.

With the departure of NDC Men’s Treatment Center, to their new location in Dockyard, Focus Counselling Service is hoping to move their Substance Abuse Treatment – Genesis Program, and also is hoping to offer, a short-term 60 day drug treatment center, at ‘Jerry’s House’.

Focus Counselling Service has been able to offer continuous treatment through the help of corporate and individual donations, funding from the NDC, and many committed volunteers and a spectacular Board of Directors.

At its recent Board of Director’s meeting held in May, Dr. Leonard Astwood was elected as Chairman of the Board,  Mr. Mark E. Jennings was named as Vice Chairman, and Mr. Burton Jones was named Treasurer.

A spokesperson said, “Ms. Lynne Greaves and Mr. Mark Anthony Jennings, both Board Director donated huge amounts of time and effort to create and oversee a series of great fundraising events to raise funds for Focus Counselling Service. Focus Counselling Service is excited to have Nicola Muirhead, and Lynne Spencer join the Board as newly elected Directors.

“Focus Counselling Service needs your time or your donation to help Focus help the community. For information please contact Sandra Butterfield at sbutterfield@focus.bm , focus@focus.bm or 532-1292.”
