BELCO Awards Graduating Maths Scholars
At graduation ceremonies held recently, BELCO representatives presented seven graduating seniors from the Island’s high schools with the BELCO Maths Award for the 2012/13 academic year.
The award recipients are: David Simmons, Berkeley Institute; Connie Campbell, Bermuda High School; Deidra Ferguson, Bermuda Institute; Daniel Walker, CedarBridge Academy; Peter Sousa, Mount Saint Agnes Academy; Xiaoyu Sun, Saltus Grammar School; and Owen Siese, Warwick Academy.
Seniors with the highest cumulative average in mathematics for the entire four years in high school receive the BELCO Maths Award, each receiving a $750 cheque, as they move on to university.
“Mathematics is key to BELCO’s operations as the company’s engineers and technical staff rely on maths to plan for Bermuda’s energy needs, and to provide a secure, reliable, safe and sustainable electric power system”, a BELCO spokesperson said.
“BELCO hopes to encourage more young people to pursue studies in maths, as well as science, technology and engineering through its annual Maths Awards to graduating seniors”.
