Photos/Video: Island Games Badminton Matches

July 22, 2013

Teams from eleven different islands took part in the badminton competition at the 2013 NatWest Island Games, with all matches taking place at the BHS gymnasium.

Badminton takes its name from Badminton House – home of the Duke of Beaufort in the English county of Gloucestershire.

In 1873, the Duke is credited with bringing a version of the game – Poona – back from India and introducing it to his guests. In 1877 the first set of written rules were devised by the newly formed Bath Badminton Club.

Divisions contested include women’s and men’s single, women’s and men’s doubles, mixed doubles and the team event, in which Bermuda placed 4th.

Guernsey won 7 medals, Isle of Man and Faroe Islands won 4 each, Menorca won 2 and Greenland won 1. Other islands in the field were Bermuda, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Gotland, Isle of Wight, and St. Helena.
