Video Previews: “Building Hope” & “Mud” Films

July 15, 2013

A documentary about the building of the first high school in a remote Kenyan community, and a feature film starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, will screen at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday [July 21]. Building Hope will screen at 3 p.m., while Mud [rated PG] will screen at 5.15 p.m.

Building Hope tells the joyful story of the construction of Mahiga Hope High School in rural Kenya and the African community working to create a better future for their children.

“Building Hope” trailer:

The Kenyan government made primary school free and mandatory in 2003. But many communities don’t have a high school, and so a child’s education often ends at grade eight. This is the inspirational story of how one community partnered with a global educational non-profit organisation to build their first high school.

The film includes appearances by Kenyan youth counselor, Auma Obama, half-sister of President Barack Obama, and by Cameron Sinclair, founder of Architecture for Humanity.

Proceeds from the fee paid to screen the film in Bermuda benefit the Kenya Schools Fund, building classrooms, libraries, computer labs and water systems at rural Kenyan schools.

“This documentary has echoes of the feature film The First Grader, which was a huge hit at the Weekend Film Series,” says programming director Duncan Hall. “The First Grader was about an 83-year-old man who showed up to primary school when the Kenyan government began to offer it for free – and this film is about building schools so that the students who began school in 2003 can continue their education.”

McConaughey and Witherspoon feature in the emotionally engaging coming-of-age drama Mud, an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud [McConaughey] hiding out on an island in the Mississippi.

Mud describes fantastic scenarios—he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper [Witherspoon], who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him.

It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow in this powerful story about love, friendship and loyalties.

The ‘Weekend Film Series’, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
