Day #1: HSBC BJGA International Golf Classic

August 6, 2013

After a delayed start due to thunder storms, the 2013 HSBC BJGA International Classic got underway today [Aug 6] at the Tucker’s Point Club. The calmer conditions the island experienced this afternoon helped the players produce some solid opening round scores.

The 2013 Bermuda National Junior Champion, Walker Campbell, has started strongly, taking a three shot lead in the 16-18 Division despite closing with a Double Bogey. Justin Dixon-Watts and Mitchell Campbell each put together 1-over par back nines to post 77 and 78 respectively, rounding out the top three in the Division.

Elizabeth Parsons, the only female competitor in the tournament, put together a solid opening round of 81, which included three Double Bogeys.

The biggest Division by number, is the 13-15 Division which still has five players within striking distance after day one, promising an exciting final two days. James Robertson, back from boarding school, put all his member knowledge to good use, shooting an opening 78, a score that was matched by Mikus Ming.

Dakota Lamb is the closest competitor after a round of 81, however Benjamin Barnett (83) and Brady Cordeiro (88) will both be looking to keep in touch with the leaders when they get to their home course of Port Royal in the final round. Three players – Kyrie Parfitt, Jonathan Page and Luke Watson – are playing their first major stroke-play event and all them faired well from the White Tees at Tucker’s Point for their first big event and all feel they can improve throughout the rest of the week.

In the 12 and Under Division, favourite Kenny Leseur opened his tournament with a very solid 83 from the red tees. Another player playing in his first major stroke-play event is Joe Watson, who is keeping Kenny within his sights after an opening round of 92.

In the true Novice Division, 10-year old Tyler Emery takes a slim lead after an opening round of 51. Connor Smith is in second place after a round of 56. The youngest player in the field, 8-year-old Nicholas Weikl sits in third place. The Novice Division take a day off tomorrow, closing the tournament with another 9 holes at Port Royal on day three.
