Man Admits Deceiving People Out Of $16,000

August 14, 2013

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug 14], Jonathan Ratteray, 26, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of deceiving two people into giving him money by purporting that he would arrange the investment of the money for a guaranteed and quick return of substantial profit.

Crown Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that the total amount handed over by the first person was $2,400.

Ratteray admitted deceiving a second person into handing over eight different amounts in June 2013 which ranged from a low of $500 to a high of $3,700.

In all, Ratteray admitted to dishonestly acquiring just over $16,000 from the two victims in the seven week period before he was finally caught. In Police custody, Ratteray admitted to the actions.

The Magistrate was told that at one point the second victim asked if Ratteray was running a Ponzi scheme.

The Crown Prosecutor told the Magistrate that Ratteray arranged for the woman to contact a person ‘overseas’ via an instant messaging system, but that Ratteray then pretended to be that overseas person and answered the woman’s queries.

Asked by the Senior Magistrate if he had anything to say, Ratteray told the Magistrate: “I have a second job interview on Friday. I think I will be working. I am willing to pay back the money. I have $1,800 on me now. I just want to pay it back and get it over with.”

The Crown Prosecutor said that Ratteray had previous convictions for similar offences.

The Senior Magistrate set a sentencing date in October, ordered a Social Inquiry Report, and granted Ratteray bail of $10,000 and required him to provide a surety.
