Dolphin Leaves Somerset Waters, Heads To Sea

August 14, 2013

After swimming around super close to shore in Somerset, the dolphin that caused a stir on Monday [Aug 12] has returned to the deeper waters and has not been spotted close to shore since.

Dr Ian Walker of the Bermuda, Aquarium, Museum & Zoo [BAMZ] said they received notice about the dolphin, with reports coming in indicating that it looked like it was in trouble.

Dolphin Quest had responded, and Dr Walker and the team from BAMZ made their way to the west end by land and sea. Dr Walker said Dolphin Quest advised people not to swim with the dolphin for both the safety of people and the dolphin itself.

Dr Walker said the dolphin was coming in really close to the beach — at times only a few feet off — and was acting in an unusual manner, and the concern was that the dolphin would get stranded, as in stuck on the beach.

The BAMZ team set up field hospital, with a local water trucker bringing in 4 loads of water to fill up an inflatable pool that would be used to hold the dolphin if need be.

However at about 4.30pm, the dolphin started swimming out to shore. The Marine Police followed at a distance and lost sight of him in the Kings Point area. Dr Walker said as of 8am this morning, no one has seen the dolphin close to shore, but they have left the pool up as a precautionary measure.

Dr Walker also said they were aware of the unusual mortality event on the East Coast of the United States, and said there was concern it was possibly associated.

More than 120 dead dolphins have been discovered since June from New Jersey to Virginia, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries Service said.

This is seven times higher than usual, and U.S. Federal scientists have declared it an “unusual mortality event” and are investigating the cause, Reuters reports.

    • ganja mon says:

What has the OBA done to increase prices in the last 7 months? Take your head out of your a$$ and you will see whats really going on!

    • US Observer in Pink Sand says:

      Ignorant Comment!!

  2. LOL (original TM*) says:

@ya mamas man. Comments like this is why vocal plp supporters have no credit wtf does this have to do with our local politics. Is this the new PLP strategy blame the OBA for everything under the sun, pssst this worked for the OBA but the PLP was doing so much wrong they basically handed the OBA things to talk bad about the plp on a platter for at least 7 years…………

    LOL pathetic

  3. Babylon says:

    The PLP destroyed Bermuda!

  4. Onlooker says:

Dolphin must have seen the pool and knew it was time to get the heck out of here!

  5. SoMuchMore says:

he’s smarter than us, got out while he could!

  6. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

I will leave the political comments alone, at least as they relate to Bermuda. It might be informative to follow up on sonar testing that the US Navy was going to do in the Pacific, which it was estimated might kill thousands of various types of marine life, including whales and dolphins. I signed a petition protesting this activity, but if the Navy has gone ahead with its plans, it would have a significant impact on marine life around the globe. We tend to think of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans as separate, but in reality, all the Earth’s oceans are one.

  7. E$ says:

Ya boy saw wat de PLP did to de island and left….

  8. Heads Up says:

Real issue people, (BAMZ, BPS were doing their jobs, if no one came to help, you’d all be screaming the opposite)

What is killing the Dolphins? Could it be the BP oil spill Which has now shown to have disfigured fish and shrimp In the gulf?

Warning to humans…fish sticks are going to go on sale – I wouldn’t buy fish Unless I could see its eyes and fins.

    • Craziness says:

Helping the one that was in the ocean and free doing his thing that obviously didn’t need help, while sitting idly by and allowing the 8 in captivity in the bath tub at Dockyard should be deemed a sin!! People want to help…. call for end to Dolphin Quest. It is shameful that we allow this to go on here. If the containment were larger and better then perhaps one could overlook the fact they were being kept, but in that tiny little space it is absolutely disgusting!!! Help those, then worry about the free one swimming on his own. Amazing how fast BAMZ came to his aid yet allow the others to live the way they do. SAD!!

  9. Seriously?! says:

Very happy to hear that BAMZ was on hand to help and very happy to hear the dolphin has swum off of its own accord.

And I agree with Pastor Syl Hayward’s comments re. sonar testing by the US navy.
