Tennis Tournament In Santo Domingo Continues

August 6, 2013

The much anticipated Main Draw First Day of the JITIC 2013 Tennis Tournament in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic arrived on Monday [Aug 5], but play was held up with ninety minute rain delay.

Six Bermuda junior tennis players are competing, and ane of the first matches on court saw Courtland Boyle take on Andres Argenal of Honduras. Argenal is a pure clay court style player who had a victory over Billy Boyle in the Round Robin section of this tournament.

Boyle started quickly breaking the Honduran in the first game of the match. Unfortunately the favor was returned in the very next game. According to Boyle’s assessment, he just couldn’t capitalize on what he saw as openings and his serve somewhat left him. In the end it was a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory for the Honduran.

Over at the Club Claro another venue, the Consolation rounds were contested. In an entertaining match Nicolas Lines was up against Marco Moreira of Costa Rica. It was a match worthy of the main draw. The Consolation scoring continues with the best of three short sets. The first two sets were split and made way for the nail biting decider.

There were great shots from both sides of the net and both players used the full with of the court to execute precision winners to the delight of the small crowd. At 3 games all in this final set Lines upped his game with some added aggression to break the Costa Rican and then serve out the match. The final score was 0-4, 4-1, 5-3 with Lines moving on in his quest to win the Consolation event.

Billy Boyle put himself in good position prior to the rain interruption and was leading Marco Moreira of Costa Rica 6-4, 6-5 with the opponents serve to come.

The pairs styles were a little different but it made for a good competitive match up. Boyle’s ground game was more penetrating and made up for some shaky service games. Once Boyle got the advantage in the Costa Rican’s service game, back fresh from the rain delay, he made no mistake and quickly closed out the match in two straight sets winning 6-4, 7-5 and continues on in the Main Draw.

Due to the rain delay causing a backup in matches the Doubles matches was cancelled for the day. All 3 players will continue on although in separate sections of the event.
