Court: 18-Yr-Old Man Pleads Guilty To Stealing
Eighteen year old Aaron Perinchief pleaded guilty to charges of stealing and falsifying accounts when he appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Sept 20] in front of Senior Magistrate Archie Warner.
Perinchief — who was employed by the Company at the time — was charged with stealing over $4,200 from Marketplace stores in Somerset and Shelly Bay between April and June this year. He was suspected and then put under surveillance and caught on CCTV surveillance by store managers.
Represented by lawyer Wayne Caines, Perinchief — an athlete who represented Bermuda at the Carifta Games — pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing and two charges of falsifying accounts.
Mr. Caines described this as a dumb decision by Perinchief but said it was driven by his desire to help his family which was in difficult circumstances. The lawyer said that in handling this young man, the Magistrate had the “Sword of Damocles” in his hand.
Senior Magistrate Warner ordered a Social Inquiry Report and adjourned the case until November. Bail was continued.

Desire to help family is no excuse.
I guess you do not coming from a family who has struggles my dear!!
Plenty of family’s struggle, plenty more work hard and don’t need to steal to provide for their own. Help by working harder, get a second job, join regiment, extra $4700 per year. Oh wait that’s too much work, must be easier ways to make money.
Caines choice of words was ridiculous, but the fact remains, this man was in a position of trust and systematically stole from his employer!
This guy was a punk. Take ya blows and be a man for once!
A punk ?…….. really that’s all you can come with. You must know this young lad and if you did you would know he is willing to accept whatever decisions that is made by the court.
When you google the origins of the “Sword of Damocles”, this bears no resemblence to the manner in which Mr. Caines used the reference.
According to the internet: “The sword of Damocles is frequently used in allusion to this tale, epitomizing the imminent and ever-present peril faced by those in positions of power. More generally, it is used to denote the sense of foreboding engendered by a precarious situation,[8] especially one in which the onset of tragedy is restrained only by a delicate trigger or chance.”
So, how does this apply to the 18 year old thief? Curious
@ back to basics…..the proverbial sword will be held by the judge. He has to make a choice to lock up the boy for his wrong doing, or to give him a break and hope that his clear record, restitution, and character references will mean that he will make better choices and do himself, his family and his country proud.
The sword of damocles (power of the Judge)to make a critical desision over the man’s life One for justice the other for grace and mercy.
both important latter risky!
your post actually explains that!
I understand Caines is asking the magistrate for a conditional discharge!

what makes me laugh about Bermuda is that it depends on who you know, what if this person had an unpopular family or no resources like knowing the right people , he would be siting in jail Right Now,,Every one is going thru Hard Times,,so what if every one go out and steal from their Boss and use that as an Excuse,,what the Funk is Up with That !
Question??? what if he got away with it !
