Con Man Sentenced To 18 Months In Prison

October 3, 2013

A 26-year-old con man was this morning [Oct 3] sentenced to 18 months after he admitted swindling people out of approximately $16,500.

Jonathan Ratteray received two eighteen month sentences with the second sentence to run concurrently with the first. He indicated to the Senior Magistrate that he was willing to make restitution, and when questioned by the Magistrate, Ratteray said that he intended to sell his car and had $300 on him now.

The Magistrate said to Ratteray: “You are a con-man.” Ratteray replied that this was true.

The Magistrate ruled that the 18 month sentences were to be followed by three years on probation during which he was to participate in any rehabilitation programs recommended by the Department of Court Services.

Before being led off to prison, Ratteray, dressed in a black T-shirt and black jeans, stripped off his sparkling earrings, gold bracelet and watch, and handed them to a female who was in the Court’s public gallery.

What is the definition of a “con-man” by law!? Sometimes I feel like certain cable and internet companies in Bermuda may fall under the bracket, i.e. you never get what you pay for!?

    • SoTrue says:

Yup!! I`m paying for 4mb`s and on average only getting 1.5mb. NorthRock says its Cablevision and Cablevision says it Northrock!

      • Seriously? says:

Try it at a really quiet time of the day, like 11am. If it’s faster at that time then unfortunately it’s probably just slow in the evenings because of the amount of people using it. Nothing anyone can do about that I’m afraid!

        • fasho says:

There is something that can be done about that. Upgrade infrastructure? Stop selling a service that can’t be provided?

        • Sandy Bottom says:

“Nothing anyone could do”? They could increase the bandwidth so that there is a guaranteed minimum even at peak periods. There certainly are technical ways around it. Or they could at least be a bit more honest about what speed you’re actually likely to get.

          • Come Correct says:

lol The technical way around it is “you get up to (blank)mbs”.

        • Kriss Crossed says:

What??? Sure they can do something about it. If I pay for 4MBs then I should get a minimum of 4Mbs (or very close to it) AT ALL times. Not 4Mbs at 2am and 1.5mb when I want to use it. Don’t be gullible. They sell up to 25mb and can offer more.

Would you accept it if you paid for 100 TV Channels but the popular ones you couldn’t watch until 2am on most days because to many people we watching it during prime time? Most of us would kick and scream. But because they use the words “up to” in front of their advertised prices, they get away with it. And we accept it.

  2. Nuffin but da Truth says:

ALL the Cell Phones and Internet Companies are *** ***!
dont just pick on Cablevision and NorthRock.

As for this guy,why didnt the magistrate take this guys earrings, gold bracelet and watch!
if anyone really believes that guy has any intention of paying back,I’d like to borrow a few thousand dollars from all of you…I promise I wont pay it back.

  3. markus says:

  4. mike says:

  6. Only in Bermuda says:

Here we go, Johnnie at it once again. Shame on you!!!!!!!
Since he is a repeat offender of the same type of crime, he should be made to serve his entire 3year term.

Now on the other hand name a court that would allow a convicted prisoner to approach or talk to the general public after being sentenced. Smh

Did they not learn from Asento fleeing from court just a short few weeks ago.

Johnnie really needs help! Just sad.

    • Raymond Ray says:

Bermuda truly is another world. didn’t you know this? I also agree for any repeat(3 strikes)be given mandatory sentences, to be served without ant time off for so call, “good behavior”.

  7. Only in Bermuda says:

@ Haha. Hold ya head up! Your just as off as Johnnie is. If he was any good he would not have ripped people off of $16,500. He should be ashamed!!! Why are you supporting his behavior.

  8. Really?? says:

No disrespect to the victims, but how does someone get conned like this? Never judge a situation you’ve never been in, but I just can’t imagine for the life of me

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Well, you have a very weak imagination then, don’t you.

  9. X man says:

Con Man: a convicted Man in a Prison Facility described as a Convict
a Criminal trickster who steals with a scheme.
Was the Magistrate calling him a Convict before he sentenced him or a Criminal trickster – ?

  10. Yes I says:

Well he’ll have all the booty at his disposal now. No need to con the cons into getting pleased.
