Drugs: Pregnant Woman Sentenced To 6 Months

October 16, 2013

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [Oct 16], Alphia Rollins —  a pregnant Barbadian national  –  pleaded guilty to importing over 500 grams of cocaine [said to be worth up to $129,000] into Bermuda on 25th June 2013.

Senior Magistrate Archie Warner imposed a six month prison sentence to take effect from 25th June and recommended that the 29 year old should be deported as soon as it is feasible.

The Magistrate said that the sentence took into account the fact that no child should suffer the indignity of being born in prison, if that was at all avoidable. He also said that the sentence took into account that the Bermuda Government should not have to bear the expense of paying for a pregnancy and then the care of two persons.

Crown Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the Senior Magistrate that Ms Rollins had been picked for a secondary search when she entered Bermuda on a flight from Toronto, Canada. Closer examination found a case with a false bottom in which the 539 grams of cocaine was concealed.

She was taken to KEMH for further examination and she was found to be pregnant. Ms Rollins has been in custody since 25th June.

The Magistrate said that the sentence took into account the fact that no child should suffer the indignity of being born in prison, if that was at all avoidable.

Warner should know that the child would not be born in prison,it would be born in Hospital and the mother would have a least 3 days to a week laying hospital.
But I agree with him.kick the drug cow out asap!

  2. Kim Smith says:

It’s nice that someone is showing respect for the unborn child… surely the mother isn’t.

  3. tidbit says:

Is this Bajan looking out for Bajan! What would a Bermudian have gotten sentemced?

    • Raymond Ray says:

For real! That woman knew damn well better but chose to attempt smuggling narcotics into Bermuda to exploit our people and our economy…Take the child back to her family when born and make her serve a sentence that will be a real deterrent to anyone who may, “try to pull the wool over our Customs Officers eyes”

    • No Jail says:

If this was a Bermudian she would have gotten off.

  4. The Ombudsman makes a statement and says:

I will care for the child if you keep that evil b***** in prison

    • Richard says:

I not taken up for her but if she is evil what about the person that she was bring in the drug for most likely a Bermudian. It kill me that they keep letting the person that ordered the drugs off and blaming only the Mule. Well on top of her stay at prison add about 7-8000 dollars on to her stay that how much it cost to send someone back to the Caribbean and if they catch the person who she was sent to they should add the cost of the Government having her in prison and the cost of sending her home because none of this wouldn’t have happen if it wasn’t for that person that live here. Bajan looking for Bajan yes but also more text dollars looking after the mother and the baby.

  5. watch says:

Dis is BS. I got more time for traffic offences! I have a kid dat didnt make a difference. Who cares if she pregnant? Didnt matter when she was smuggling…..

  6. Double Standards says:

500 grams and only 6 months? So girls if you get caught doing the same make sure you get knocked up before your trial…SMH

Sorry but she chose to become a mule while pregnant.

But having said that, kick her off the island after 6 months and place her on BDA’s own stoplist…

  7. realist says:

    Really…
6 months. I dint want to shoulder the cost of housing her wit 3 squares a day.
but r u kidding me. If there is no punisment for ppl. There will be no change. Who cares if shes pregnant.

    • sage says:

Do any of you anti drug hysteria adherents wonder why the authorities never catch the bermudians who coerce or threaten these vulnerable people into smuggling these drugs?Surely a pregnant female was not planning on hanging on the streets peddling cocaine for herself.Maybe she read the local news where the inflated maximum retail prices of drugs must surely attract smugglers with dreams of untold profits.Despite punishment the draw of quick money for desperate people ensures this onslaught will continue unabated, thank the war on drugs for making drug dealers and “prevention agencies ‘never ending work and lots of money.

      • Richard says:

And Sage that has been going on for years here as many people know and turn a blind eye to it. Drug dealing is almost away of life in Bermuda for all races. And they all do the same thing go to poor areas of another country and entice to become mules yes they made their mind up on their own the average person in Bermuda have never seen real suffering yet so when somebody offers a person $200.00 US and a plan ticket they think they made it and the person selling that wolf ticket knows it and uses that. So how many of you still think people in Bermuda are different from anybody else. We just have a Nicer prison lol.

  8. terry says:

    They came for my neighbor.
    I said nothing.

  9. Positive says:

Personally, I hate this comment section of this news website. For the simple fact, Bermudians love to judge. First of all it’s none of any bodies business why she did what she did or even how she did it! Secondly, when your smuggling you know it’s a risk of getting caught. She knew the consequences. So who are we to bash her. Calling her an evil bitch. She hasn’t harmed any of us. Not even our pockets. So just keep calm and keep the negative comments to yourself. I’m sure you was taught if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything.

    • Come Correct says:

She hasn’t harmed any of us? Good thing they caught the coke huh? A little coke never hurt anyone. Sad part is she was probably just a distraction.

      • Richard says:

To true Come Correct to True Drug dealers are cooled as ever they don’t give a dam

  10. RawOnion says:

OK, so now drug mules will now be pregnant women. If they get caught they will be out before the child is born. I think we are sending the wrong message as there are many women who will take the chance, while pregnant, to smuggle drugs…..the reward is now greater than the risk.

  11. concerned bermudian says:

    send her back to Barbados!

  12. really says:

Question has family services in either here in Bermuda or Barbados been contacted. This cases could and should be consider a cases of child abuse that ciuld follow that child for it entire life. I am never an advocate for removing a child from it parent but tjis moms decision to be a mule while pregnant makes mome wonder what else she would do for money. Drugs in the formula on.the next trip. Or maybe sell the baby.

  13. X man says:

She’s lucky that the Govt..is broke – looks to be a very expensive inmate
6 months may be short but it looks like She’s going to cost us well into the thousands with the special incarceration,Hospital Bills and the Baby care.
The Baby will come back several years from now claiming to be Bermudian and wants to live here. – OH Yeah ‘

  14. haha says:

6 months dats a joke…you get more time for herb!

  15. Winnie Dread says:

6 Months for cocaine, if this was a Bermudian or a Jamaican you would have seen a TOTALLY different sentence. Oh shoot she is from Barbados (did not even see that, lol) and where is the “learned” Senior Magistrate from?????????? And we continue to have people like these sitting on the benches.
