Mad Hatters Rugby Tournament This Friday

October 9, 2013

The 2013-2014 Rugby Season kicks off this Friday 11th October at National Sports Center, North Field with the inaugural “Mad Hatters Rugby Tournament”. Title sponsors Mad Hatter restaurant have taken over the former Sandy Boat Tournament.

A spokesperson said, “With participants asked to attend in the popular restaurant’s trademark crazy hats as part of the festivities- it should prove to be a fantastic atmosphere. Last year’s winners Police RFC are looking to defend their title but should face stiff competition with Renegades RFC looking again to dominate the silverware case after last year’s historic double- league and knock out trophies.

“They will be counting on BRFU Player of the Year prop Jahan Cedano to lead the way. Teachers RFC will also be looking to impress with their young and upcoming team. All eyes will be on Rookie of the year, Josh Deallie to see if he can build on his impressive first season at the senior level. Mariners will be searching for the form that lead them to win their historic ‘double’ in 2011 and will rely on the return from a long injury of National team lock David Rorke.

“On the Women’s side of the Mad Hatters tournament perennial combatants Renegades and Teachers will look to renew old rivalries with Woman Player of the year Katy Smith leading the Reds. However upstarts Police and Mariners will be showcasing their new talent and it should be a tight competition. Games are shorten to two 15 minute halves with each team playing each other once.

“Kickoff is at 6pm at National Sports Center, North Field. There will food and refreshments along the side lines with the inaugural trophy presentation scheduled for 10pm.

“All players are reminded to register before the tournament. Registration can be done online via the BRFU website or via the BRFU demosphere.”
