Video: PLP Introduce Task Group Members

October 8, 2013

[Updated with video] MP Michael Weeks, Christopher Webson, and former Police Superintendent Larry Smith are the members of the new Task Group, Shadow Public Safety Minister Michael Scott announced today [Oct 8].

Mr Scott said the Task Group will: Examine and identify the Bermuda Crime profile, the causes of gun shootings, assess the psychology of the offenders of violent crime, plot a set of prevention responses to our incidents of violent deaths, identify the main ways guns and bullets enter Bermuda and make “recommendations to the Party Leader of the PLP for use in the country’s fight to stop shootings and to cut off the supply of weapons and bullets into Bermuda.”

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Scott said: “I am joined by the Task Group Members to introduce ourselves to the Public at large, advise you of our mandate and to invite both specialist and general public participation to help make this Task Group’s Work penetrating and effective.

“We shall go about our work by examining existing data and information from various sources including public information and where permitted, internal documents that point to relevant data and information that will inform our work.

“Key to our work will be direction and guidance from the public law enforcement and the courts and persons in communities where the impact of violence is or has been prevalent.”

  1. Cloughie says:

Why now? You messed it up when in office, and now you have a bunch of ideas? Jog on.

    • Family Man says:

Who said they have any ideas? They’re going to have meetings to discuss the idea of reviewing some data and they hope to get some ideas from the public about their “direction and guidance”.

      • Cloughie says:

You said it, no ideas, no idea. Never did have, never will have.

Like I said, jog on boys.

  2. Ride says:

Come on guys. You had 14 long years at the helm. You literally oversaw the acute rise in gun crime during that time and produced little to curb the incidence. May you explain why the public should take the formation of this task group as anything more than a photo-op with potential to grandstand and nitpick at the current governments efforts.

    • aceboy says:

      Spot on.

    • frank says:

think before you speak take a good look at the oba a lot of black faces but what have they realy done since they have been there take a good look they took away term limits so now work permit holders can stay longer so your child will never get a job
and the latest pass out more prc’s
oh and next give the prc’s the right to vote

      • Mike Hind says:

Did the previous work permit policy – before they instituted term limits – mean that “your child will never get a job”?
If not, why does it mean so now?

You said “let’s take a good look”, then say something as weird as this? Come on.

  3. Vote for Me says:

Surely this needs to be a joined up effort? Many hands make light work!!

  4. Ghost Rider says:

If any of you think this will stop any criminal activity I wanna sell you the moon.

  5. AwayFromHome says:

But… I thought that crime was decreasing, according to an article some months ago. I guess not.

    • Family Man says:

It is decreasing … cthe ********* were voted out.

  6. Victor says:

We are blessed to have Mr. Michael Scott taking an interest in the affairs of our troubled young men – no doubt his experience will lead many a troubled young life to another way.

    • Hmmm says:

“We shall go about our work by examining existing data and information from various sources including public information and where permitted, internal documents that point to relevant data and information that will inform our work.”

Huh? This just indictaes you are clueless.

Everyone knows that morality, responsibility, respect, love and proper parental guidance being absent was the cause…..saved you a tonne of time there. Now GET ON WITH PUTTING IT RIGHT PEOPLE!

    • Rockfish#1 and#2 says:

      Victor,

Folks will figure out the meaning of this post later.

Perhaps they need to read it a few more times!

  7. bermudaboy says:

Guys, Please leave it to the big boys.

  8. Come Correct says:

    Larry Smith?! You’re kidding me.

  9. Realist says:

    Like they care!

  10. Talk and substance says:

…….when these guys take photos they are always putting their hands together, what does this signify?

    • Sandy Bottom says:

Yeah, I wondered why they are holding hands? Was that for the photo? “Let’s hold hands and get our photo taken”?

  11. Family Man says:

It means “that’s one hand he can’t put in my pocket.”

  12. tidbit says:

Michael Scott and his task force should have been assembled when his Party was the Government Party and he was the short term Attorney General!

These guys don’t cease to amaze of what they would do for political attention, Who is funding this? I know all the persons on the task force and I am not impressed with any of them…lot of extra baggage there to say they are some task force! Have they now got a better understanding of how these guns and drugs are on the street after they have lost the election or have retired from the Police Service! This a joke!

  13. frank says:

tidbit your the joke in order for things to change for the better for black people in this country we have to do it don’t think for a moment that the oba cares a shi==t about you

    • Hmmm says:

They don’t care about one individual, they care about all individuals. The other lot cared about me myself and I

  14. 2000 jobs? says:

Dear MP Scott, you may have forgotten but you won by 8 votes its time to hang up your hat and not waste time on these PR exercises since this time you will have to face a Primary and be replaced in Sandy’s North with a PLP Candidate who can win more convincingly than 8 votes. Please apply for one of the 2000 Jobs

  15. Bermyman says:

Why did they not do this when they were in power!? All of the ideas and purpose seem to be positive but in reality this seems like more of a publicity stunt to appear important and proactive.

  16. longtail says:

This from the party that used to say that gangs were not a problem in Bermuda????? As usual, a little late in arriving ….a bit like trying to run a fleet of buses with no tyres – the PLP have always been a little slow in dealing with the obvious!

  17. Victor says:

Now, now boys, I guess you missed the joke… Apologies for being vague but I know Bernews would censor anything other than that.

  18. Elephant says:

We do not forget that gangs flourished under the PLP.Please go away and let those that care and know how address the gang issue. You lot just keep looking for a photo op.We are not fooled as we have good memories, and know the PLP had 14 yrs, and crime and murder went through the roof.

    • longtail says:

….crime and murder are not the only things that went through the roof under PLP! We will be paying for their mistakes for years to come!

  19. Sara says:

Without money from black markets, gangs are NOTHING. No money=nothing to fight over.
