Friends Of Shine Music Concert Raises $1300
The Friends of Shine concert, held in order to support local musician and businessman man Wendell “Shine” Hayward after he fell some $50,000 behind on the rent at his Reid Street location of Shine’s House of Music, was a success, seeing many of the island’s musicians and performers come together for a great party in support of one of their own.
The party was able to raise $1240, with an additional $55 donated, and all funds will go toward Mr. Hayward’s outstanding bills.
The show got started a bit later than expected, but opened with Toni Robinson with a gospel number at 1.30pm, followed by Gina Spence and Daughter with a liturgical dance.
The show was well-organized, with a mixture of live bands and tracked singers. Lil JJ and B-boy kept the show going with their unique blend of hip-hop and pop sounds, following by teachers from the Bermuda School of Music – Shelton Bean, drummer; LaTania Elerbee, vioins; Jeremiah Smith, Lead Guitar; John Lee, bass, and on the last song, Shine joined them on the flute.
Live Bands who participated in the event included, Piece of the Rock, the Gina Love, Joy Express, FIRE, Sonique Sanctuary, Aaron Spencer, Dean Smith Shine Hayward, and Season and Salt.
FIRE, an all girl band, delighted the crowd with their mixture of gospel and R&B, Joy Express played the contemporary music that made them a popular item, while The Gina Love Band mixed old school R&B with reggae. Sonique Sanctuary, a cosmopolitan rock band, entertained with original pieces and two popular pieces.
All entertainers performed two or three pieces. Tracked singers included Jaee’Blaque, Marvo, Hip Hip with a conscious message, and Stagger Lee, a reggae artist. All three performed original pieces. The final tracked performer was Sybil, with her rendition of a stunning Patti LaBelle piece. Dean Smith wowed the crowd with his alto sax. As the evening waned, Shine’s student Aaron entered the stage. An exceptional saxophonist, Aaron wowed the crowd with his skills, before being joined by his teacher as they performed a duet.
The night ended with Shine demonstrating his fine talents, closing out with Toni Robinson and a gospel number. MCs for the night were Nadanja and Nishanti Bailey.
Organizer Carol Smith said, “I have been asked to do this again, for families that need help. If the musicians are willing, and we can find sponsors to help with the advertising, and some other things, this can be done. If musicians are willing to do this again, I am willing to organize one for needy families.
“I also want to thank the people who helped put this together. Gina Love, my right hand organizer. I also want to thank Fudge and Sudeko, the Somerset Cricket Club who sponsored the field, Sound Concepts, who did the sound for this event. A big thank you to the musicians. If they did not come, it would not have been a success.”
What a shame .
Sorry this was far from success 1400, sounds more like a joke and a waste of time.
Bernews please tell me you mean 14,000 was raised and this is a typo.
The amount raised in comparison to what is owed is a drop in the bucket. The compassion and humanity shown is no joke and the true success of this concert. Could you imagine if every one of us came out to this event and donated one measly dollar?
“We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each others’ happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men’s souls; has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery ,we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all.”
Great copy and paste from Charlie Chaplin’s final speech in The Great Dictator.
But that has nothing to do with why he only raised this amount of money.
And i stand by it being a sad situation the club should have never gotten this far back in rent, just piss poor managment and no one wants to support and or give the hard earn money to a poorly run bussiness or event.
HE didn’t raise this money.
This was other people trying to helping him out.
Sorry for the typo.
But that has nothing to do with why he only raised this amount of money
Should have been:
But that has nothing to do with why they only raised this amount of money.
Does it matter if it’s a copy and paste? I couldn’t say it better and the words have meanjng.
I agree he shouldn’t have let his debt go so far but the guy was doing what he loved, most of us can’t say that. Maybe he was holding on to hope that it might turn around, hope may have been all he had. To sit here and say this is a joke is just cold hearted, its not funny. I hope you never make a bad decision.
I give my charitable contributions to The Salvation Army,it helps more!
Good for you…..thats your CHOICE……..just as those who’ve donated to Shine is THEIR choice…
As they say greed kills pup why keep a business open when you are not making any money. He was doing ok when PLP was in power because they support the club no PLP no money.
Actually, he was already way in debt even before the end of 2012. The problem was that it just wasn’t a profitable business. There isn’t much more to it, unfortunately.
Any business that is held in that building doesnt last. Only business that was doing well was Azoine every week that place was poppin Soca crowd week after week. The rent of that building is very high thats why businesses never last long. Good luck Mr. Hayward
Good Day,
The cause was not to re open the business. It was simply to help a fellow Human being, who so happens to be an ambassador for Bermuda and its musicians. Musicians want a place to play and share their talents. No matter the cause the people that came out thoroughly enjoyed the talent that was displayed. THAT WAS THE SUCCESS! I was proud to be a Bermudian seeing the talent ranging from teenagers to senior adults. I was not deterred by negative remarks. I was grateful to 102.7 Sherry J and the people of Bermuda who shared my feelings to assist where needed. Trust me I do…. and I will host another concert to help needy families. That is my nature to help. Its my love of live music that sparked the concert. Im sorry that I help the needy in my spare private time. I never exposed my actions to Bda this open before, I just do/did what I can and have to do on my own. So trust me I DO HELP THE NEEDY. In my humble spirit I didn’t want the attention that I noted this event sparked. My only intentions was to help a musician the only way I thought was to host a befitting concert. Now in the past I would have never thought of this! But music will help needy families as the musicians are willing to join me in my plight. Thank you to the nay – sayers n ya sayers for your support. The nay -sayers helped me to keep my promise and see this event to the end. The ya -sayers kept my spirits alive and made me more determined that I was doing the right thing. We are working out the creditors who will be paid and I can assure you they will be, yes its only a dent, However a half or quarter of a loaf is better then none. However the feeling of being a brothers keeper and knowing that you (Shine) are loved as we all have shown Shine that he is loved, and there are people that care about him. This has enhanced all of our lives. AGAIN THAT IS ANOTHER SUCCESS. I trust and pray that who ever was opposed to this action and event do not fall short in their life journey and you find ones self alone and in the cold. God help you stay in the success you share now. Thank you to the people that donated and came out to the event. Numbers/attendance to the event did not make it a success. The people that came can attest that they did in fact enjoy their selves and got their $20 worth. Bermuda know you are blessed with talent and have up and coming musicians n singers to follow in the present performers steps. THAT IS ANOTHER SUCCESS! So Bernews was right! The event was a SUCCESS! Thank you Bernews and Royal Gazette for your assistance. Thank you to the musicians who donated their time and filled the air with sweet music on the 11th of November 2013. You will be blessed. Its a pity when negative over shadows the good. This will not deter me to be a giving person. Stay tuned NEEDY FAMILIES HELP IS ON THE WAY!
