Rugby: Women & U/19 Team For Vegas Trip
The Bermuda Rugby Football Union will be competing at the Las Vegas Sevens this coming weekend, with Bermuda set to be represented by a Women’s and Bermuda Under 19 Squad.
In February of 2013 the Bermuda Women’s team traveled across the US to compete in the Las Vegas Invitational 7s Tournament. This was the first time the Ladies had played in a tournament officially representing Bermuda and despite strong opponents the team went on to win the Shield Final in only their second tournament since their formation.
The Las Vegas Invitational 7s features club teams, select sides and National teams from around the world. More than 240 teams competed in 2013 and this is expected to grow for 2014 with an expansion of teams playing in multiple competitive divisions for men, women and youth. The Las Vegas Tournament is considered one of the premier amateur rugby events in the United States, featuring athletes and matchups across a wide-range of rugby divisions and age groups.
The Women’s National Team dubbed the ‘Dark and Stormys’ will be competing against premier international clubs and National Teams including the US Combined Services, Japan and USA. With increasing numbers they aim to use the tournament a developmental event to give their newest members game time prior to international fixtures.
The Bermuda Under 19 team has been training since the Classic in November and are competing in the High School Open Division. The long term plan is to consistently compete for the cup trophy in that division over the next few years. The next stage in the Under 19 Development will be to enter a team into the High School Elite division where they will go head to head against the USA and Canadian Elite teams which are essentially junior national teams for those countries.
