BNG To Release Its First Hardcover Book
The Bermuda National Gallery [BNG] is going to launch its first hardcover book, a tome entitled “Bermuda National Gallery: An Introduction” that will offer highlights of the museum’s collection. The book will also feature opening remarks by Ruth Thomas MBE and authors Sophie Cressall, BNG Curator, Lisa Howe, BNG Director.
The book will be released on Thursday, February 27, 2014.
A spokesperson from BNG said, “Published in celebration of the museum’s commitment to the visual arts for over two decades, this beautifully illustrated volume provides an introduction to the BNG’s unique national art collection, which represents the diversity of Bermuda’s mixed heritage of cultures.
“At once historical and contemporary, the collection of artwork held by the BNG may surprise readers with its variety in terms of art forms, artists, time periods and representative cultures.”
BNG Director Ms. Lisa Howie said, “This book is a glimpse into the holdings of the BNG with some narrative about the museum’s history, with spotlights on several artists. The collection has evolved significantly in the last few years, always with a commitment to cultural relevancy, artistic merit, and the artwork’s position within the canon of art history as the driving considerations for acceptance.”
BNG Curator Ms. Sophie Cressall said, “The exercise of creating the book allowed for a new perspective on how the collection can be read or interpreted. The book is organized by chapters according to region or culture, and this established the concept for a tandem exhibition, which opened in January 2014.
“The exhibition, Highlights of the BNG Collection, presents select works from the collection in three themes, very much as a dialogue across time periods and art movements. The Book Launch will give visitors time to explore the collection in two very different experiences simultaneously: reading the book and reading the exhibition.”
