Women’s Hockey League Weekend Results

February 6, 2014

Under a humid and partly cloudy night, women’s hockey action got underway over the weekend, with several high-energy games being played.

Budgies 8 – Longtails 0

An attempt at goal by Budgies’ Francesca Cacace was well-defended by the Longtails, but not long into the game the first field goal was scored by Budgies’ Jasmine Patterson in the 7th minute. Patterson would score additional field goals in the 13th, 24th, and 30th minutes. The Budgies’ Yvonna Osborne added another field goal in the 26th minute.

A penalty corner awarded to the Budgies that was executed by Cacace to find Patterson, who slammed home her fifth goal in the 33rd minute, ending the first half of the game at 6-0 for the Budgies.

The Budgies’ Keishae Robinson converted a field goal in the 48th minute, with another Budgies goal coming from from Tse Minors in the 51st minute, leading the team to an 8-0 victory.

The Longtails played a good game, but were simply unlucky in converting any of their scoring chances.

Ravens 3 – Bluebirds 1

This match started with both teams exercising effective passing and attacking set plays, which promised to be tight and with plenty of talent from both sides; however, an early field goal came in the 5th minute by the Ravens’ Mollie O’Donnell that set the tone.

Despite this, the Bluebirds’ defense held firm against a mixture of a slightly young team that was assisted by some of their national team players. With this experienced Bluebird side, the battle continued until a foul in the ‘D’, and a penalty corner was awarded to Ravens’ and Megan Troake. The corner was beautifully converted in the 23rd minute, and the first half ended with the score at 2-0 for the Ravens.

After a spirited pep talk by the Bluebirds’ coach, a more energized Bluebird team took the field as the second half got underway. Both teams created a number of menacing chances through the ‘D’ but were unable to find the back of the net for more goals until the Bluebirds’ Laura Bardgett, coming down the right side, passed the ball just inside the circle to find Jo-Ann Smith, who ran onto the ball and slammed this one time shot into the goal to the right of the Ravens’ keeper in the 46th minute, cutting the score to 2-1 for the Ravens.

This Bluebirds’ goal shifted the momentum of the game, but only one minute later the Ravens’ Isabella Boonstra scored a field goal just inside the circle; even though Bluebirds continued their attack for the rest of the game, they were unable to tally and the game ended at 3-1 for the Ravens.

Swallows 3 – Wildcats 1

The Swallows’ Liz Stewart executed a penalty corner in the 60th minute, with teammate Jen Hale also scoring a field goal in the 60th minute. The Wildcats had their chances to score, but couldn’t convert when the ball got into the ‘D’.

Swallows 4 – Longtails 1

The Swallows’ Julie Haggarty scored a field goal in the 9th minute to open the scoring in this match. The Longtails’ Laura Hope scored a field goal in the 21st minute on a breakaway to tie the match, but the Swallows’ Joanne Heaney scored a field goal in the 41st minute, with teammate Saki Perinchief scoring another only two minutes later, to give their team a 3-1 lead.

Sara Perdichizzi slipped in a field goal on the edge of the left post seconds before the whistle in the 70th minute, giving the Swallows a 4-1 victory.
