Police Urge Vigilance: Fishing Lines On Roads
The police said that this weekend a car became entangled in fishing line in Pembroke and an off-duty police officer also became entangled in fishing line while riding his motorcycle in Warwick.
The police said that while it is “unclear if the presence of fishing line in the roadways is intentional or as a consequence of increased kite flying activity,” they urge “increased vigilance by motorists.”
A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service is aware of an email warning cyclists that traps are being set using fishing line across roadways to dismount cyclists with the intention of robbing them.
“While no robberies have been reported, the Bermuda Police Service can confirm that on Friday 14th March a car became entangled in fishing line on Marsh Folly Road, Pembroke and on the evening of Sunday 16th March an off-duty police officer became entangled in fishing line while riding his motorcycle at Cobbs Hill Road, Warwick causing him to fall off.
“It is unclear if the presence of fishing line in the roadways is intentional or as a consequence of increased kite flying activity but the Bermuda Police Service urges increased vigilance by motorists and pedestrians to report any hazards to road users whether it appears intentional or accidental.”

Yes, its being used so that kites can fly in the rain and stay up all night. Plastic paper and tail is also used.
Its very annoying having them fly all hours at night making noise…
So where does the fishing line play into the rain? Hemp string don’t snap in the rain last time I checked.
Plastic tail come on do You REAllY know what You are talking about.
They “URGE” increased vigilence???? How can you see a fishing line if you are driving?
oh geez. I really hope this isn’t intentional.
A. Sign of the times! Kids can’t be kids anymore because adults have ruined it with their own ongoing bad behaviors. We owe to our kids to allow them to make mistakes and it is our job to be responsible for where they are and what they do and the consequences it I hate seeing kids raised to responsibilty of adults.
So by your reasoning, if a cyclist is garroted by a kite line, then it’s OK – because kids should “be allowed to make mistakes”?
But if a cyclist is garroted by a line intentionally set by some scumbags, then it’s not OK?
The whole point of RAISING children is to do just that. RAISE them. Raise their levels of knowledge, responsibility, personal accountability, and the ability to differentiate right from wrong.
It’s called parenting. Try it some time.
Its also a sign from drug dealers that they have drugs to sell,
Yeah bermudagirl because its so easy figure out where the kite is being flown from….(test that out next time)
This isn’t for those who don’t know who the dealer is, its for those who do. When you see a particular kite up in a particular area, for those who know, the kite will tell them who is restocked. It isn’t rocket science, but apparently bermudagirl knows more than you.
That is nonsense….
Your really stupid not to know how long have you lived on this island? I know that please are you human?
Makes no sense… Depending on the wind direction, a kite flown FROM one place will be FLYING over another place… Old wives tale like shoes in telephone wires…
Sooooo because kites are almost ALWAYS only flown around the kite flying season, drugs are not being sold any other time of year?? That’s like putting up Xmas lights around your house at Xmas time as a secret signal. Also, if this kite flying signal nonsense was true, what happens when he has no drugs to sell, yet his law abiding neighbors are all flying kites…..during kite flying season?
You really stupid to think that.
Should be pretty easy to tell if it is kiteline or strung there to snag people on bikes. If the latter it is extremely dangerous. Imagine a cyclist running into that across the neck. This is serious stuff.
Maybe we could ‘urge’ the police to actually do something when complaints are phoned in about kites flying at all hours?
Who flies a kite with fishing line? Has any of the stupid people who suggested the idea ever tried it. Why put a bad name on a kite. Its bermudian heritage. May be its a foreign worker doing it. I mean if it was a kite wouldn’t you find the kite close by.duh!! And where do I find plastic paper? Is it plastic or paper? Dumb but popular people are the worst. Watch how many people start to believe that there is a such thing as plastic paper SMH.
This is really sad IF it’s done intentionally. Dangerous as well.
My throat was sliced open by kitestring hung across the road, slicing me deep across my whole throat and right over my jugular. If it had cut a fraction deeper my blood would have sprayed out like a fountain and I would have watched myself die right there and then. I went to the police and warned them the dangers of this, but I never saw any public announcement or commercial to warn people. But when it happens to a police officer it seems to matter.
Kites should be banned. You love culture good for you, well my throat was suddenly without warning sliced open while driving my bike on a main road. When the string hit my neck it got tighter and tighter against it as my momentum kept going forward, burning and melting my flesh around the slice wound. It literally choked and sliced my throat at the same time until I came to a panicked stop.
Never in my life did I think this would happen, but it is deadly scary and deadly real. Anyone caught doing this on purpose should get a public beating so bad and life in prison without parole. Doing this by neglect for proper kite safety and retrieval should be punishable by $25,000 fine and 10 years jail. Only way to stop it.
Since my throat was sliced open I have run into another line since then, thankfully I avoided this one. My wife was on my bike too.
It’s probably intential. I remember growing up in the 90′s in Middle Town. We used to tie fishing line to trees so when people ride through the track to go up rambling lane they used to get clothes lined. Back than we were young and dumb!
A relative was telling me about this. If this is intentional which I kind of think it is then WOW times are seriously seriously rough…
if these are proven to be malicious acts….my people are in very bad shape.
Somebody’s been watchin’ “The Councilor”!
we need some men about 10 15 strong to look for these guys that are robbing and stealing or breaking in ,,look for the troublemakers
doing this to their own people, they are truly domestic terrorist and need to be dealt with like terrorist, how can we meet a organize this?
A good kite needs a good tail. You gotta have a strong arm and line to keep that tail aloft. I like a good tail. The strings attached get on my nerves.
People who only think that kite flying is the drug dealers need wake up and get a clue cuz I know two other ways kite flying is used
Find the little bas****S, put a rusty hook in the line they used, and use them for bait at Challenger Banks or further.
Why are they unsure of the origin? If a police officer came off his bike, why didnt he investigate and see if a kite was attached to the line? Seems like common sense and then we would know if it is intentional or not.
This could cause grevous bodily harm…or death…I would urge our lawmakers and councles and well Qc’s to look at this now to be ready for when thisthing heads into court…the punishment must suit this cowardly act…
