Appeal Posted For Bermudian In UK [Cancelled]

April 11, 2014

[Updated: Appeal cancelled] A homeless Bermudian living in London is seeking donations to get back to Bermuda – according to an appeal posted on the popular crowd funding website GoFundMe.

The appeal’s stated fundraising goal is £1,200 [$2,013], and so far it has raised £170 [$285] from three people since April 1st.

“I am so deeply embarrassed about asking for help, but I have nowhere else to turn,” the appeal begins.

The situation, as told on GoFundMe, began when the person decided to head for England to make his scrap metal business work there, as in Bermuda the “Government has a monopoly on the airport landfill, where all the scrap goes.”

He said he had “little in the way of funds, just enough for a one-way ticket, and a few hundred to get me by” but his “faith was high.”

“The country had already decided before I got here that some changes needed to be made in that industry due to the large amounts of metal being stolen and sold for cash, so they enacted new licenses beyond what I already had, and that cost was close to £600, that killed my idea out the gate as I didn’t have that kind of money,” the text on the appeal said.

“I then tried applying for benefits, even emergency shelter, but I have been told I am not eligible for any assistance as I am of no fixed abode,” the appeal added.

In describing being homeless, the person said: “I spent several weeks sleeping out at Gatwick, contacted the local government offices there in Crawley, but I was faced with the same no-go reception.

“After several weeks the cops were on to my sleeping rough in the airport and so asked me politely to leave, it took me 2 days to walk back to London, Victoria, the only other place I was familiar.”

The person who the appeal is said to be for is not named, and yesterday we contacted the person who posted it on GoFundMe asking for additional information/confirmation, and will update if able.

Update 9.49am: We spoke with the person who posted the appeal to confirm that it is legitimate. We were also informed the person who the appeal was posted for has received National Insurance Number, which means they are now eligible to apply for benefits.

Update 10.32am: The person prefers to remain unnamed, but we have been told their identity and checking around indicates that the person named is a “real” Bermudian. He has stated, “I overshot my expectations of the UK”.

Update 10.54am: Since we posted this story, four more people have donated – taking the total up to 7 people having donated £300 [$503].

Update 5.06pm: The appeal has been cancelled, with the GoFundMe page now saying: “Thank you to all donors. The individual involved in this matter has decided to remain in the UK and all donations have been returned!”

In addition, an email to Bernews from the person who posted it stated that “after reading the comments on the story and further consultation with other Bermudians in the UK he has decided to remain in London. Therefore no further donations will be accepted on the site and all donations made have been refunded.”

The full story, as posted on GoFundMe, is below:

I’m reaching out to my fellow Bermudians who might be able to assist a homeless Bermudian male in the UK with financing for a return flight to Bermuda.

This is his story:

Hi There,

Firstly this is not a joke or scam, but rather a real serious issue that I never thought would happen to me. I am so deeply embarrassed about asking for help, but I have nowhere else to turn.

In Bermuda I tried starting a Scrap Metal/Recycling Business, but as you know the Government has a monopoly on the Airport Landfill, where all the scrap goes. I presented a very detailed interview, a written proposal to follow-up, but things sort of went stale, meaning nowhere. The new Minister of W&E is in and I have yet to hear from Her and the new PS, so I decided I would head for England, the land of opportunity to make my scrap metal business work there. I applied for all the pertinent licenses and received before I left for England.

I had little in the way of funds, just enough for a one-way ticket, and a few hundred to get me by, my faith was high and I knew God would watch my back, and though He has, the country had already decided before I got here that some changes needed to be made in that industry due to the large amounts of metal being stolen and sold for cash, so they enacted new licenses beyond what I already had, and that cost was close to £600, that killed my idea out the gate as I didn’t have that kind of money.

I then tried applying for benefits, even emergency shelter, but I have been told I am not eligible for any assistance as I am of no fixed abode. They say you need to develop a residency, which means you need a place to stay, what can I say. I’m having a hard time getting a National Insurance Number–this makes you legal to work in this country–as I am homeless now and conceivably cannot get myself together enough to even go on an interview, and not having a residence, a NI#, or the funds for a CRB which is a police report, I am screwed all the way around.

I spent several weeks sleeping out at Gatwick, contacted the local government offices there in Crawley, but I was faced with the same no-go reception. After several weeks the cops were on to my sleeping rough in the airport and so asked me politely to leave, it took me 2 days to walk back to London, Victoria, the only other place I was familiar.

Back at Victoria, I applied for services at: The Passage, a homeless outreach day centre, but again I was eligible for services, but was given a free 21 days to come and shower, eat and have clothes washed, all at my expense, nothing charitable at all. I received a sleeping bag from the Priest there of which I used to sleep in a door step at 19 Grosvenor Place, after having my things stolen while I slept I finally began to fear for my life, and so I begged for help and a day or two later an outreach team came to me while I was sleeping out and offered me to go to a place called: “No Second Night Out.” This charity helps people find housing, but in the meantime I have to put up with sleeping on the floor, being in close proximity with severe addicts and drunks who come in and out all hours in the night, trying to sleep is virtually impossible, and though God asks that I accept all for who they are I have and so I live among these people only because God says it is only temporary.

I have been beaten down by this society, I can’t even begin to support myself as I am not in the shape need be to do so, all I can see in the near future is me slipping into a depression, perhaps maybe becoming like these people and just giving up, I don’t know and so I am begging for help to get back to Bermuda where I can at least try harder, maybe if work is not quickly forthcoming, do my own business, I have enough people that I can make something happen and so should have thought about that before leaving for a strange land, but I can’t change what is now. I am asking for help and if and when I can I will make good on this, I assure you with all my heart, please take favour on me and help me through this, thank you.

This is a really sad story but at the same time — who travels to a foreign country without even the funds to secure housing for themselves??

    • inna says:

This is it! Methinks his plan was not very well thought through. Who goes over to a foreign country to start up a business with only a few hundred in their pocket and no place to live?? Scam?

      • In all seriousness I will comment here to all like comments below,Bermudians are so predictable that it is not funny, this man whom most of us don’t know made poor decisions based on what he hope to achieve, and now that he finds him self a day late and several hundred dollars short, and no way of getting back to his homeland. The only thing you all can do is kick him while he is down on his luck, at least he put his damn Bermudian pride aside and cried out for help.

Our problem is we are to damn judgmental in this country and we would rather put up with the like of helping everyone else but our own, grow the hell up and not only help the man in his hour of need but also be willing to assist him in becoming something positive upon his return,he made a serious error in his decision making like none of you have in life, but he has today, tomorrow and the rest of his life to do better and with your encouragement you can be part of the process.

        • Let me go just another step further so all of you can understand why I am so passionate about this story in particular, we have another Bermudian living in the States, who is really down on his luck financially and could use any help he can get,he is a painter by profession but also does handy work, could not find enough work to survive here and thought he would go to the states to live and see if he could make it with lower cost of living, and he has found that things are a lot lower but the problem remains the same, trying to survive with little to no income.
Now based on the limited information I just gave, people would run with that and write all sorts of nasty comments concerning this Bermudians plight, but then if I was to mention that this Bermudian was one of those pounding the pavement in the height of all of the murders that were taken place in Bermuda, who took it upon him self to get involved directly to help solve some of our murders and to help to console the bereaved families, along with making himself available to talk direct to the gang members and put his own life at risk on behalf of his country, folk would cry out that we should give back to such a person who gave out much in our time of need, but no did we help him,are we helping him and what did his country do for him, so yes I think many in this country are nothing but jokers, I say put your money to action.we have all the resources we need right here but a jack foreigner can come down here and make out like a bandit

          • Cordell W. Riley says:

I wouldn’t go as far to call my fellow country man jokers, and I understand your passion on this issue. We have to do more for each other.

            • Steve Biko says:

Everyone is coming to Bermuda to work, why leave Bermuda this is the land of milk and honey.

              • PLOP says:

If you stay you have to work for money, if you go to the UK you can live off the Dole “welfare” and not work.

Then you can also scam people into giving you money as a bonus, THis has scam written all over it.

                • Carlton Smith says:

And you are a foolish lip flapper who runs off at the mouth without having a clue as to what you are talking about.

Allow me to introduce some facts into your small mind….

First, it’s not a scam. They guy is real. I have spoken to him and will help.

Second, as a single guy he only qualifies for two benefits that will hardly allow him to live for free permanently.

Third, when he does work, which he will, his 20% will take care of any handout money for him and a host of others.

And last, even people who had businesses employing people have difficulty living a simple basic life in Bermuda.

You have wasted much space and a few hundred words here by writing useless nonsense.

                  • Peace on Earth says:

How do I know you are not the same that posted the request to begin with?. There are no names, including yours. I can understand the individual wanting to remain anonymous but why the people that were trying to help him? The picture used was not of the person, no name of victim, no name of the person posting. You come forward saying the story is true….who are you? Oh ya , I forgot, its on the internet so it must be true.

                    • Carlton Smith says:

You do like I did. Contact them, and leave your contact information, for him to contact you directly. Then you help. I didn’t send money…I did more.

You keep your money though. Use it to buy your $7 bread.

You would be better served seeking logical aolutions versus entertaining yourself off someone’s misfortune.

              • in the news says:

for foreigners, maybe he didn’t go through the correct channels out there.

                • Carlton Smith says:

He is not a foreigner, and neither are you. He and you are aa British as anyone else over here and you have the right to work and abode.

                  • Peace on Earth says:

But we refer to British people living here as foreigners? Don’t we?

          • PLOP says:

Mr Santucci, if this was you and you were living in the airport would you not check the arrivals and departure boards for incoming and outgoing Bermuda flights with the hopes of seeing someone you know, or having someone call home for you and arrange help.

This story seems fishy especially now that he has decided to withdraw his request!

            • Carlton Smith says:

He is not a foreigner, and neither are you. He and you are aa British as anyone else over here and you have the right to work and abode.

          • PLOP says:

Mr Santucci – you do realize that MANY Bermudians that have run to the UK to live are living off the welfare system. A system that they one PENNT have not contributed to. You do realize that they are foreigners and expats now!

Should Nahki Wells be kicked out of the country. Surely, they can find someone in England capable of kicking a ball! Why do they need a foreigner to do it!

            • Gypsy Mama says:

Every Bermudian who has EVER paid taxes, including myself at 26 years of age, contributes to the system in the UK. This government pays taxes, taken from Bermudians, to England each year.

Read the laws prior to making comments on issues and aspects of governance which you clearly know very little, to nothing about.

              End quote.

              • Peace on Earth says:

Tell us oh wise one and just what was that grand total that we paid last year. Ask yourself what you get for those tax dollars…think about it. Military support, legal support, access to embassies, training, schooling, passports, and lots more. When you get that figure…ask yourself does it cost us or Britian more? And even if we do pay, are we entitled to anything for free! You may be 26 but you still have some learning and growing up to do. Wait until you have to cash that reality check.

            • bermudian never an expat in the mother country says:

you idiot in bermuda all of us born here or whose parents one or both born here are british before being bermudian , so one can never be an expat or foreigner in the mother country ! Further more bermuda is not a country regardless of what many may think as we are not independent we are british in all sense !

        • Cordell W. Riley says:

Duane, I’m with you on this one!

        • PLOP says:

Duane I do agree with some of what you are saying, but the reason why we are so judgmental is because he obviously is fairly well educated and should know better. Did he not do some research before he went there. Most people go on vacation with more money! Why would any right thinking person think this was a well thought out plan?

He made a mistake and I felt bad for him and was even contemplating contributing to his return airfare. But then he decides to stay!!!!

I wish him well, and I hope he has better luck and doesn’t just become another immigrant living of the Dole, as many are doing now.

      • Stop following the leader n follow your own regime. If you could not do it here, what made you think you could do it in England on a one way ticket..
As you can now see n feel that British Airways flew you over but you should have had a return ticket period… You’re not embarrassed, your dumb for putting urself in a position such as you have.. When people say we bermudians are narrow minded, gullible n lacks creativity, you surely answered that statement.. Not sorry for you because you can’t run away from your problems into a strange land because as you now know, they follow you there as well. You could hsve slept on the streets of your own country. Now what???
You better work it out. Make your bed hsrd, lay in it hard.. Let the chips fall where they may!!!

        • Random says:

When did we become so heartless? If this is legit, it seems the man has laid there long enough.. If one does not wish to donate, that is his/ her choice. To make a comment with the intent to discourage aid for this man really is going above and beyond for the sake of coldness.. I’m guessing there’s a reason you are the way you are today. I apologize that this world has brought you to this point. May you find peace sooner rather than later

This gent tried to get me to invest in his scrape business in Bermuda – but never showed up at a meeting we were to have. A month later I got an email in which he told me he was stranded in Gatwick and asked for money – about 4 months ago. It seems like a scam to me.

There is a classic email scam about being stuck in an airport penniless that matched the email rather well.

      • cicada says:

        “scrap”

      • cicada says:

Look up the “Stranded Traveler” scam in Google

        • Crazy says:

Heres is a Article related to this:

I was in the shower when the phone calls began. A friend rang to tell me she had received an email saying I was stranded in the Ukraine having lost my passport and “cell phone”, and urgently needed £2,100 to settle my hotel bill and get home. Since she’d only seen me the previous day she knew it was a scam.

Checking my mobile phone, it was full of texts and voice mails from other concerned friends with the same message. When I actually opened my email my entire address book of nearly 1,000 business and personal addresses had disappeared. Knowing I couldn’t send out emails warning my friends and contacts, I hurriedly put a message on my Facebook page and on Twitter to ignore my plea for money, handy though it would have been, and to assure everyone I wasn’t stuck in the Ukraine.

I had no inkling at first how it had happened. Then I realised I had opened an email the previous day, supposedly from my internet provider BT, saying I needed to confirm my email address as it was introducing changes. Unless I did so, I would lose my address and access to my emails.

As a freelance journalist my email is an essential tool and I didn’t want to be without it. I clicked on a link in the email, filled out the resulting form and entered a code I had been given. Both the email and the form looked official, but when I submitted the form it refused to accept it.

I remembered reading about BT introducing changes to its email accounts and went on its website to check. There it confirmed that the BT Yahoo! portal was closing over a number of weeks. On re-reading the email I realised it said the deadline for confirming that I wanted to keep my email address had expired the day before the email was sent. I was livid and even submitted a complaint to BT. Still I wasn’t suspicious; the best lies are based on an element of truth.

The next morning, I was hugely embarrassed at having joined the ranks of the 3 million people in the UK who fall victim to scams each year. Citizens Advice estimates that almost half of us (48%) have been targeted and that £3.5bn is lost to this type of fraud a year.

I rang BT and the first person I spoke to “took over” my computer and checked the phishing email I’d been sent. Although it looked like it had come from BT Yahoo!, when they hovered over the sender’s name without clicking on it, it came up with a “Davan Wilson”. I wish I’d checked that.

The BT assistant said Davan would be an innocent person with BT internet who had also fallen for this scam. After 45 minutes I was still no closer to getting my email addresses restored, although I had changed my password and security question twice. So I was transferred to another assistant. After another long wait and another change of security details she spotted that the phishers had changed my email settings so that replies were redirected to a different address still in my name but ending “yahoo.com” rather than “btinternet.com”.

The first assistant hadn’t picked this up. When I asked why I was told the first person was in the broadband department, not email as I had requested two hours earlier. The time wasted was infuriating. It also meant that any emails sent back to me checking whether the begging message was genuine would be diverted to the scammers who would no doubt tell the senders where to send the £2,100. In fact, some friends said they had received a further email doing just that. Fortunately, no one fell for it as the English was ungrammatical and littered with Americanisms.

It took until lunchtime to resolve and I spent the rest of the day taking calls and answering emails from friends and colleagues about it. It was 48 hours before my email addresses were restored. In the meantime, I could have lost work and some of my friends could have lost money.

These scam artists are time wasting crooks, invading us in our homes and trying to rip off our friends. I have learned never to click on a link in an email message, no matter how genuine it appears. In future I will close the browser, reopen it and type the address directly into the address bar.

It’s also a good idea to check the sender’s address, but be aware that phishing emails often contain very plausible email addressess. For instance, HMRC says recent false tax rebate emails had the spoof address refunds@hmrc.gov.uk. If in doubt, Google it and see if you land on an official website. If not, be cautious.

He decided to stay because I got in touch with him to help him and there is now a solid active plan in place. You people are ao quick to bandwagon a bunch of nonsense.

Now go on and build a big thread based on your apologies for running your mouths maliciously….

But I know I won’t see that because small minds at play will never carry their own load nor will they back up their faults.

Poor enough to be homeless and asking for money for a return flight to Bermuda, yet he clearly has a computer and internet access to be able to post this SOS call? Sounds like a typical Bermudian struggling to pay bills with a $60k BMW sitting in the driveway! SMDH!!!

    • DarkSideofTheMoon says:

The what it is written looks like someone else made this for him……..

    • Bermudian Abroad says:

I do agree this does not sound right. However there is free usage of computers and internet service at the Library. Usually on Fridays or the day chosen in that particular town or city a person may live in.

    • Celery™ says:

Clearly you have never heard of internet cafes or public libraries.

    • Carlton Smith says:

The guy is a real Bermudian, and he has been helped. How do I know?

Because unlike you,I contacted the folk who posted the info, and left mine, so he can get in touch with me.

I am helping this guy and laid it all out for him, so he is now staying and thus the folk have had their now unneeded donations returned.

He is on a computer, because the libraries here give internet access for free as well as wifi.

You know, if you didn’t get gratification off talking about the misfortune of others, you might have had the common sense to do what
I did and verify it wasn’t a scam.

  9. J Starling says:

Perhaps the London Office could contact the individual, and if it’s legitimate they could confirm it and arrange some assistance.

Even them confirming it as legitimate would probably help his case and help him with his raising donations.

At the very least they could probably get him some temporary accommodation and help him find some temporary work. Just because his scrap-metal idea doesn’t work (and I’m not sure he researched it properly, business plan like), doesn’t mean he can’t work – as a Bermudian he’s able to work in the UK afterall.

    • J Starling says:

I’m currently in the UK (in Edinburgh).

I just made some calls, including the London Office, and I’ll confirm that this is genuine as far as I can tell.

So, I will encourage people to help him out in whatever capacity they can.

  10. Real Talk (original) says:

My mama always told me if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

    • One up one down says:

More than likely this is NOT a Bermudian but a scam……

    • One up one down says:

Sorry to keep coming back but how did this person supposedly apply for licenses (I guess to operate their scrap metal business) and receive them before leaving WITHOUT a National Security Number that they state is required for them to work?

SCAMMER! Legit and you would have put your name. I don’t care how embarrassed you are you would have put your name. Nigeria anyone!?

  18. Smh says:

I went to the post page and looked at the postal code posted with the post. I find it very strange that it is the same postal code as the Bermuda London Office.

I feel for the guy if the story is true. But it all seems a bit weird to me.

    • tricks are for kids says:

A Bermudian gentleman that is employed by the Government of Bermuda is attempting to assist…hence the postal code….

  19. Carla Rose says:

My goodness! If this is legitimate, this persons plight is no ones fault but their own. And @ Navin Johnson: that was funny as heck! “he should contact the Mayor”s office and ask them to wire 50,000 no questions asked”…too funny!

  20. tricks are for kids says:

True Story. …this is NOT a scam…it is a classic case of “Fail to plan…you plan to fail”…this is not a young person but a grown man (50′s) that should have known better. A few hundred dollars will not get you very far in this day and age…I was first made aware of his plight at the beginning of April from a friend (Bermudian) of mine that resides in London and has done so for many years.
Not sure who his family is but I am sure they are aware of his situation so hopefully ( if he hasn’t burnt any bridges) they will step forward and assist.

  21. realist says:

    its typical Scam.
    and even if its not.
why the hell should we as a public five to rats asses. hell juat be on the street here i. bda becoming another kieth.

just leave his ass out there

  22. Terry says:

Spent all his/her money and misses Bermuda.
    Bite me.

  23. Betty Trump (L. Furbert) NOTREAL says:

Scam, also 1200 for a flight to Bermuda. Nah not at all, usually MUCH less. Unless he wants first class ticket back to Nigeria.

    • You have no idea says:

One way flight in Economy on Monday = GBP 1,154! Flights are NEVER under $1,200!

    • Carlton Smith says:

Haha…. you are being idiotic. It’s not a scam. It’s a real guy and he is not coming back there. I have stepped in to help and he took the offer.

Just so you know, the current listed one way fare from here to Bermuda on BA is £1156.

Now apologise for besmirching this man’s character and making yourself look silly.

  24. Bermudian Abroad says:

Hmm… I am sorry but this gentleman’s story just does not hold water for me.
First off… Why did he come to a England on a one way ticket? When in actual fact it is cheaper to purchase a round trip ticket.
On top of that he did not come with enough money to even secure housing for himself for any length of time.

I regularly tell my friends, family and anyone who is planning to move to the UK to come with no less then a year rent upfront, because most rental agencies require at least 6 months upfront from any person who can not provide a 3 year history of residence. And the benefits office will no longer help you if you can not prove you have been supporting yourself financially for at least 1 year.
Even if he was able to find a shared accommodation, he would be required to not only pay several months up front, but he would need to have his National Insurance Number.

Furthermore, How long was he living in the U.K because the Metal Law changed in October 2013. And How was he planning on opening a metal business which at the very least requires a Van or truck, which clearly needs to be bought and insured and also requires an address.

Continuing on, the story of the Emergency Shelters do not ring true either. I have lived in the UK for 11 Years both in the South and in the West and East Midlands and have volunteered in Homeless shelters and to my knowledge they never required any fixed abode.
Also in England there are places such as YMCA and they do not charge.

I am sorry if I come off as unsympathetic but I feel that this is a scam, or at the very least a situation brought upon himself. And I am wondering what will be different once he returns to Bermuda. And why can’t these people he claims ” can make something happen” help him now?

And just reiterate a ROUND TRIP TICKET to the UK is CHEAPER THEN A ONE WAY … Think on that…

    • Carlton Smith says:

You DO NOT have to be here for 1 year to get benefits.

You DO NOT need a van or truck to deal scrap metal either.

Shame that you have been here 11 years and can give out factual information yet.

But save your money, words, and drama.

The guy is fine. While you were busy on here trying to run him down, I actually reached out and contacted him and am now helping him. It won’t take much either.

  25. Bermy says:

How he got access to a computer and he is homeless?

    • Carlton Smith says:

  26. sad says:

Some PPL are simply mean. How about if this is true we all make mistakes. If we can learn to do things from our hearts as good gestures and not the what if’s. The world would be a better place. Good bless Bermuda and her PPL please dont bite my head off.

  27. 1minute says:

He went to start abusiness but thought £600 for the license was too much. Not a well developed business plan. Maybe he should call his family and have them help.

  28. Realist says:

I know some people out there would dislike this but i’ll say it anyway.

What did he expect, if you couldn’t make it here in bermuda with about 60,000 people who help and look out for you; what made him think that going over to the UK with a population in the millions, plus the millions more from the EU countries he would do any better?

Let this be a lesson to those who think that running to the UK is a golden ticket to the easy life.

    • Carlton Smith says:

Unrealist, you have no clue what you are talking about.

I came to the UK not so long ago in a similar position. Ironically I end up being the one to assist this gentleman, while you and the rest simply ran your mouths.

      Information is power.

      • foldgers says:

While I find it commendable that you stepped up, your constant re-iteration of this fact is coming across as lofty and disengenuous. A round of applause for your stepping up. however a big Boo and the hook for your pompous self righteousness. Good deeds should be done in a humbled silent , with success being ones only reward recognition should be the bane of a humble deed.

        • Carlton Smith says:

Don’t try and deflect from the shame of the ignorance in thw comments on here. In case you haven’t noticed I worked my way down the column and there were more than enough down pressing, disparaging comments thus far.

Not a single apology from anybody, and here you are with gall and nerve to yry and instigate a next angle to bicker from!

Well, since you choose to nitpick and can appreciate a good detailes petty argument, allow me to point out that your very observant blind eyes forgot to tell your quick witted mind, that for the ENTIRE THREAD any number od people were skeptical about unidentified people and even questioned why the fund waa pulled, falsely labelling the whole thing a scam.

I simply provided verifiable proof that it was not.

Now go lay down and stop wasting bandwidth.

  29. Elston says:

Takes some nerve asking for money without even revealing who you are.

  30. If only says:

If only this worked the other way around and I, as a British citizen, could stay in Bermuda forever….that’ll be the day

  31. nuffin but the truth says:

it took me 2 days to walk back to London..?????
    that alone makes say..LIAR!
(could have got a lift real easy)

This is an Internet SCAM!…100% SCAM.

on the other hand..I’m a Bermudian living in Bermuda and I have No money for Gas for my very large 4×4 Kia that I spent a lot of money on for added extras.
Not being able to pose around town in my Kia is causing me severe problems both mentally and physically,so please, my fellow Bermudians, please, please, give me $20 each to fund my gasoline requirements.

  32. Have a heart says:

A one way ticket to London is in fact cheaper than a round trip ticket. $954 one way, return around $1400. But a one way from London at $1900, cheaper to do a return back to London at $1100. His story sounds legit, why not reach out and help a fellow human being, no matter how small it is than stand back and judge another’s consequences.

  33. Really ?!? says:

Googled “19 Grosvenor Place” I somehow don’t think the gentleman was sleeping in the Dorchester Hotel’s doorway.

  34. Frank'N'Onions says:

Hey – if this guy contacts the Bermuda London office, declares his issues and shows a real need, I’d gladly post some $$ to get the poor guy back here. But on the honour of an online petition? No way!

Someone over there has to make contact with this guy, put him in touch with the right authorities and THEN make an appeal to the broader audience.

There’s WAY too many scams out there – I can’t give money without knowing it will actually go toward bringing this guy home. How do I know that he won’t just pocket the money and disappear?

    • Carlton Smith says:

The appeal was put out by the London Bermuda Office… just so you know.

And also, the London Bermuda Office is NOT set up to assist Bermudians.

You might also like to know that he is very much real and I have found and helped him, so save your money, as unfortunately I won’t be able to help you buy your $7 bread.

      • Peace on Earth says:

Sounds like you are happy to have left Bermuda. ..which is good because we are happy you left.

        • Carlton Smith says:

Actually it’s the idiots in the woodworks like yourself that make $7 bread that much more unbearable. It doesn’t hurt at all to be without you.

I can still come and go as I please too (no PRC here).

  35. 21st Century says:

Is this legit? The picture is taken from a UK website from 2 years ago
    http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2012/homeless-figure-soars-from-5-to-61

    • Geez says:

Really? Obviously it is a stock photo. Did you really think its an actual picture of the actual guy?

  36. Truth is killin' me... says:

“A fool and his money are easily parted.” DON’T BE A SUCKA…SUCKERRRR!!

  37. Cordell W. Riley says:

What is the new liberal mantra? If you don’t want one, don’t get one. So if you don’t want to help, don’t. It’s as simple as that!

  38. fidel says:

if family and close friends are not paying for the ticket back then there must be more to the story !!!!!!!

  39. Sandy Bottom says:

Serves him right. He went over there to sponge off the taxpayers there and it failed. Tough shiet. I have no sympathy for him at all. He’s a sponger.

    • Carlton Smith says:

You’re an ass. He wiĺl only get JSA as a single guy, which is hardly sponging. When he works, he will pay his 20% like the rest of us. When he spends, he will pay VAT like the rest of us.
He us also just as British as anyone here.

Go think of something constructive to post.

  40. one time says:

The BPS should investigate this. Why has this persons appeal for help suddenly come to a halt and the funds donated reimburst??? Definitely worth a call to London by the BPS even if they don’t investigate the matter. Stop this possible scam network before it profits from people’s good wil. The hole thing could be legitimate but definitely now questions need to be asked by the proper authority’s! !!

    • Carlton Smith says:

The appeal has been halted because some of us have common sense.

I forwarded my contact info, they put him in touch with me, we spoke, I advised and set up a plan, so now he is safe and staying.

Anyone of you could have done the same, but chose to get on here and run your mouths only.

      • Humblebrag says:

Someone give this guy a medal so he can stop repeating how awesome and charitable he is.

  41. buzz says:

Very Typical of some, quick to shoot a Person down, that is probally the reason he doesnt want his name to be mention, for further Judgement, Peeps will find all reasons just so they dont have to help, most of who if they them selves where in a Pickle would want Peeps to Help them

  42. Full moon in Paradise says:

No sympathy from these quarters. Enabling is for the birds!

  43. it probly could happen says:

I invested in a project in the USA. However I am finding it hard to get any traction because I am over here in Bermuda and it’s hard to find someone reliable in the area. I was thinking about quitting my job and going over there to get the project finished then head back to Bermuda. But right now i am trying to play it safe. Who knows if I was more like that dude i would probably already be successful because I wastes so much time playing it safe. Or I could turn out like he did and completely screw up. all about taking chances.

  44. Craig d says:

Hi Mr. Smith, Is there a place in which I can contact the gentleman as the appeal has now ended and no contact information is given.
