Heritage Month Officially Opened At Reception

April 28, 2014

The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs hosted a reception on Friday to officially open Heritage Month, with this year’s Heritage Month carrying the theme of ‘Bermuda’s Historical Treasures.’

Speaking at the reception, Senator Alexis Swan said, “Heritage Month is a welcomed tradition in Bermuda. It is during this month that we take time to celebrate our people, culture and all the things that make us uniquely Bermudian. It is, in fact, a month-long pride fest in which we can all participate in some way.

“The Heritage Month Committee has adopted “Bermuda’s Historical Treasures” as the theme this year. As it states, the theme, is reflective of the marvelous historical treasures that are part of what we enjoy and value. It encompasses many the traditions, places and people that we treasure and revere.

“I hope that all residents will take time this month to enjoy some of our historical treasures that can be seen in the beautiful architecture of our buildings; our treasured beaches and parks; our Bermudian restaurants; our musicians and entertainers including the Gombeys; our forts, wrecks, reefs and of course ocean surrounding our island.

“Since the theme is historical treasures, this month would be a good time to brush-up on our history by visiting the National Museum of Bermuda, The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Bermuda National Library, Historical Society Museum, Verdmont Museum, Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo, Fort St Catherine Museum, Globe Hotel and Carter House. Just visiting all of these museums should keep us busy for the entire month!

“During this Heritage Month, I urge everyone to pause, reflect and celebrate the many wonderful places and traditions we have enjoyed through the years. Let’s focus on the things that matter….the traditions and cultural attributes that we value. This is our Heritage Month and our time to shine and celebrate our heritage and traditions.

“I’d like to close by thanking the Heritage Month Committee and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs for organizing a month of great programming and events. I am looking forward to participating in many events. It’s truly special time and indeed a time when we can all say …Bermuda is so much more!”
