Tomorrow’s Voices: Autism Awareness Month
Tomorrow’s Voices Autism Centre continues to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities with a full slate of fun and creative educational and fundraising events throughout April.
The organisation said, “With the recent CDC announcement on March 27 2014 that now 1 out of every 68 children in the United States registers on the autism spectrum, an increase of 30 percent from two years earlier, there is a logical assumption that Bermuda’s prevalence rates are following similar trends. With this increase in our neighbours to our west, it is more important than ever to continue to educate and raise awareness on autism in Bermuda.”
“Every day our Early Intervention Centre fields numerous queries from parents wanting to find out more about Autism, but more importantly, how to access the services at our centre. Unfortunately we have a waiting list. The availability of our services and the ability to assist more children are constrained by limited resources.
“Autism Awareness Months allows Tomorrow’s Voices to raise not only awareness, but also to raise funds so that we can assist many more children and families.”
Other key events Tomorrow’s Voices will be holding throughout the month are as follows:
- April 11 – Centre Open House
- April 12 – Saturday Social Skills Group – youth and staff visit the elderly
- April 16 – Training Institute Workshop – “Autism Globally – How Does Bermuda Measure Up?”
- April 17 – “Autism Rocks Socks!” – crazy socks fundraiser
- April 25 – “Autism Tags It!” – tag day fundraiser
- April 26 – “Get Puzzled Car Rally” – fun scavenger hunt fundraiser
- April 30 – Autism Awareness Month ends on East Broadway
Chairwoman and Co-Founder Thea Furbert stated, “I am excited for Tomorrow’s Voices to be able to celebrate Autism Awareness Month with the number and variety of educational, awareness, and fundraising events as has been organised this year.
“With current international studies pointing to an alarming incidence rate now of 1 in 68 children with autism, we have to do all that we can to educate the public as well as raise much-needed funds to offer services to parents and their kids. These events do that. We hope the public can support us.”
